I thought Jeff's photoshops could have still been funny without being as over the top, but that's Jeff. I was a little stumped when that thread was locked however. If Jeff just made some silly photoshops mocking Chris for no reason, it would be one thing, but once you bring something up on the air, it's fair game, that's always been the rule. If you don't want to get shit for it, you don't bring it to the table. The story was not told in a somber way on the air, it was told to elicit LOLZ.

If you read the rest of the thread, you'll see that the mods and admins say there are clearly defined rules, but they're not clearly defined. Then they'll say that everyone knows what's allowed and what isn't, but then say it's up to their judgment as to what's allowed and what isn't. :wacko::wacko::wacko:

Honestly, it was a tough call. There were a number of factors at work. First, it was that Jeff and Chris don't really get along, which tool it out of the realm of ballbusting. Seconf, it came off kind of mean spirited. Third, was the kind of uncomfortable subject matter. Fourth, is the member bashing rule, because Chris is a member here. True, you hold yourself out more by being on the air, but there are stil limits on the board. It was a borderline call in my head, and my gut said to lock. I'm not even saying it was the right decision definitively, but it was the one that seemed to make the most sense under the circumstances. If it truly was the wrong decision, I apologize to Jeff.

As for Gvac's comments... I've explained ad nauseum that ball-busting is okay, but there is a line when ball-busting becomes personal attack. Given the number of variables involved, it is nearly impossible to definitively define in a vacuum when ball-busting becomes personal attack, so judgment sometimes needs to be made by the staff. Gvac would like everyone to believe there are no rules and everything is up to the vague judgments by the staff. Then again, Gvac decides to only selectively acknowledge the things that I type.

That is OK, and can even be EXPECTED since humans are involved - but don't even pretend to be impartial. Although I believe most mods and admins try to be fair-handed, that simply isn't the case all the time.

Case in point (aside from the obvious thread lock) - why was Rorschach banned? It's hard to prove he is just a board character - he may just be socially awkward or even disturbed. The only reason he was banned is because you (or whoever banned him) don't like "him" and what he posted. I have seen posts from a TON of people that were more inflammatory, caustic, and directly insulting that did not get the poster banned. Looking at this externally, this appears to be a personal issue and the "slight" of flouting the almighty power structure.

***EDIT: And even THAT isn't consistent because "the known" will be treated with a light or heavy hand depending on how they are known by the Amins or Mods. An example was already listed - the MLC thread was locked while FMJeff was teased MERCILESSLY. Both issues were brought up on air and "fair game" but treated inconsistently.

Instead of locking the thread, wouldn't it be better to confront the members who may be going too far rather than lock a thread that should be open for discussion? Even editing "offensive posts" - given that a reasonable explanation is provided - makes more sense than immediately locking the thread.

I am sad that you are so unhappy here. And even sadder that this thread exists at all, never mind the depressing turn it has taken. But at some point I guess you need to realize that the Admins and Mods have to do their job (actually it's not a "job" but rather an extra-curricular activity which they volunteer for and find fulfillment in) as best they can. And that they, too, are humans and flawed.

2) i do believe that the faq's need to be updated. Maybe us Mods and admins can have a homework assignment and get that going. its severely needed.

3) i have full experience of making a mod call and getting shit on for it because most people were friends with Alkey....not that anyone remembers what happened...lol. I stood behind my call because i felt it was the right thing to do. that happened in 2006 and im sure members here still carry a grudge because of it. It's funny...I get along great with Alkey, yet people still hold it against me.

4) when im on the board and i see something out of hand, i try to defuse the situation as best as possible with humor. it always seems to work...most of the time anyway.

5) friends on this board are always busting balls. its hard for new members to "get it" because they just dont know yet. so what should happen? no ballbusting rule for everyone? will that really work? ron and fez thrive on busting balls. if youre a fan of the show you should get sarcasm.

6) as far as the constant attacks on Mikey and Jon about the site sucking...well...that sucks. i know how frustrating it is about the Mobile skin sucking and what not, but seriously, to defend Jon, he works a lot (offsite on the board). he is the main guy that repairs and makes changes, but he does bring a lot to the board that people just dont see. The softball games for instance. he should get a lot more gratitude for trying to bring people together on a personal level...i think that counts for something. Mikeyboy is CONSTANTLY in the studio getting pictures of great Ron and Fez moments, calling in on fantastic topics, voicing his opinion.

Case in point (aside from the obvious thread lock) - why was Rorschach banned? It's hard to prove he is just a board character - he may just be socially awkward or even disturbed. The only reason he was banned is because you (or whoever banned him) don't like "him" and what he posted. I have seen posts from a TON of people that were more inflammatory, caustic, and directly insulting that did not get the poster banned. Personally, I hate Gvac's Rorshach character, and I've said so in the past. It's a one note board character that seems to have no real use beyond repeating a pretty hateful slur and getting around the no member bashing rule. It's kind of like Great Tiger's Turban without the humor. I understand the character is meant as a joke, but the joke doesn't seem to be apparent to lots of people, and it makes it appear that we allow member bashing on the site. He also runs rampant on the board when we've told others that they need to keep their characters within certain threads. As I said, I didn't ban Rorschach, but I can understand the frustration behind doing it. I just don't see the banning of a board character as any kind of ineguitable retribution.

Missy brought up the treatment of Jeff and Chris. I see her point, but I honestly saw those two situations as different. Jeff caught hell for the finger in the ass comments, but most of those comments came from people who are his friends. While there may have been others who piled on (I honestly can't remember), my recollection is that most of the comments directed at Jeff were just ball-busting. I took the stuff about Chris to be beyond that and over the line. I've already admitted that I may have been wrong, but at the time it seemed like the right decision. As I've said before, that's the only time Chris has gotten bailed out like that. If anything he's caught more shit than most people here for plugging his sites on the show. The bottom line is that Jeff is a friend of mine, and it was never my intention to give Chris favoroable treatment over him in this dispute, and I don't think I did.

Most of the times I took him to task were when I thought he was being an unwarranted asshole to others. A long time ago, it drifted into more of that, and people let me know that I was being unfair to him, and I scaled back a lot. In fact the last time I can remember that he and I had any type of real confrontation, it was during the O&A suspension over a year ago. Even at its worst, it paled to the two of you trading e-thug physical threats a few months back. I don't even get this example.

If anything Greg, you're the one getting special treatment. You're an asshole to me on these boards on a pretty much constant basis, and no one's taking action against you. We seem to be cool in real life, but here, it's another story. If it's a bit, then it's been run into the ground far, far worse than the "Gvac is old" jokes.

I seriously try to be as fair as I can. I try to treat people the same. I try to do what's best for the board. I try to do what's best for the board to support the show. But, you know, I'm spent. I'm sick of every decision being considered the wrong decision by someone. I'm sick of being accused of playing favorites. Now I'm even being accused of being power hungry. I guess it comes with the territory, but man... There was that whole exchange about whether this thing is a job. No, it's not a job. It's a volunteer thing. None of us are getting paid. For the first time in the nearly 5 years since I joined the staff, it's actually felt like a job. I probably need to take a step back and not take it all too seriously, but it's not easy when it seems like half the posts are acccusatory.

As for the IP thing, despite the fact that I've already read what my opinion was apparently going to be, I'm going to say that I think Bobby was in the wrong. Because of my ignorance, I really have no idea how serious this is. I'm totally serious when I ask this question because I really don't know. How can a compromised IP be used against a person?

Basically, an identity can be stolen by an IP but if the hacker needs Bobby to post Gvacs IP in order to do it, then he cant do anything with it. Its not too hard to get Ips..

I love how 20 pages pass about a thread I posted and nobody even bothered to ask me what I thought via IM or email except for Bobby.

So I'll share my response to Bobby with you all in the hopes of putting an end to the "debate".

I do not hate, Chris. I don't even dislike Chris. I think he's a doofus and a cornball at times which makes for great mocking fodder, but he's not mean-spirited or malicious like some of the pricks in this community....just a little confused about what should be said and not said in certain social situations. A lot of us are, myself included.

Was the humor over the line? Funny things are usually over the line. Ron's humor is over the line more times than I can count. Nobody faults him on that. I don't think it's anyone's right to say your joke went too far. Jokes go only as far as you let them go. Ask Imus, he learned that lesson all too well.

I personally feel anything said on the show is fodder for message board ridicule. He chose to put it out there, I chose to mock it. I thought it was good natured ribbing. Why? This was not a scenario where Chris was molested against his will. From what I could tell it was a conscious decision to allow a sexual act to take place to avoid potentially insulting a friend. There's something inherently funny about that. I chose to act on the humor. More importantly, so did Ron. But again, nobody will fault him on that.

Was my thread lock-worthy? In my opinion, no, but I don't own this board anymore so it's not my call to make. Chris knew exactly what he was doing before he told that story. He even said it on the show, and I'm paraphrasing, "I know how the community is going to respond to this but ah well"...That ah well says "come what may" to me.

Personally I feel Mikeyboy should've asked Chris if he was offended before he made that call. If he did and he was, than I apologize to Chris and to the mods. But if I know Chris, and I think I do based on our conversations, I have a feeling he could care less about my dumb photoshops.

So yeah, it was a bad call. But who cares? 20 pages worth of debating one post? Seriously, that's about as retarded as message board dramas get.
