Tonight I watched one of my favorite movies..."Last Tango in Paris" with my girlfriend. She HATED it. There was no redeeming quality as far as she was concerned. Marlon Brando gave one of his (arguably his best) performances ever. Sure there are some awkward (super sexy) scenes, but "hate"? What should I do? Can I trust a girl like this? Is the flick hated among normal folk? Ugh.

Hey Nubbs. When you dump your chick, give her Knox's number.

Oh, Knox! Really? Is it because of all the reading??
I enjoy Brando's monologues quite a bit. I realize it's slow. But...
But. Butt.

I like it, but it's not exactly a movie that I would say has universal appeal. I can completely understand someone hating it.

Because it's the creepy misogynistic ramblings of an old man. It's this whole thing about how a man can be "brooding" and "mysterious" and have a hot young chick fall for him because he's "dark". And, plus, she'll let you fuck her ass with butter in the kitchen. It absolutely reeks of loathing of women.
The woman in it exists only as an object for Marlon Brando's character to pour his frustration and hatred into. And to fuck in the ass, of course.
Plus, I think it established a bad precedent for dealing with sex in cinema: it's OK to show graphic sex, as long as the people having the sex are miserable, and the sex makes them more miserable. I call it the "Last Tango in Paris" rule. See anything by Catherine Breillat, which flip the creepy gender dynamic of Last Tango the other direction, for a prime example. Or, better yet, don't, because her movies suck too.

Knox rules. I can see why LTIP was a big deal when it came out, but I think it's aged horribly and just ends up being a dated piece of bohemian mysogyny dressed up as an art flick. Brando at his most self-indulgent worst.
This reminds me of the KITH sketch where Dave Foley is creeping out his girlfriend because he obsessiely loves Deliverance and LTIP for the "excellent writing."

yeah, at the least, it is an historically important film. Breillat sounds cool- its been too long since i've been genuinely creeped out by a movie.
As to this thread; always a, er, bummer when gf doesn't connect to something you feel passionate about......
i believe the real deal is when Ironman (cue 'popcorn') is just as enjoyable to watch together.

Fitting, since he's the only thing worse than anal rape.

It is good in as much as it is an art house flick that reflects the times that it was filmed in...I watched it three or four times..years apart..the last two times it was dull.
