I've always been fascinated by the people that are part of the crowd on the Today show. What time do they get there to be the first few to be in the "front" row? I'm thinking about being one of those people doing the tourist thing (seems they usually pick people from out of town) and giving a shout out when they zoom through the crowd.

Information about when the show's producers allow you to start lining up should be on the Today show website, but figure bitchass early in the morning. Like 4 or 5am.
Don't wear any branded t-shirts; TV shows avoid people with lots of branding like the plague to avoid any possibility of having to pay for the licensing.
Do bring a cute "Hi Mom" (or whatever) sign.
Friends of mine and I tried to do something like this for Good Morning America a couple of years ago before the Avon Walk in NYC ... and ended up having to "compete" with every freaking Rod Stewart fan club in the tri-state area that day because Rod was performing live on the show. (Times Square at 4am is so weird!)
We didn't get in ... and by the time we got back to the studio after grabbing some breakfast, there wasn't even enough room on the sidewalk for us to stand outside and smile stupidly.

I took my mom to see the Today show in Early March of this year. The key was to go on a day that didn't offer any big acts. We got into Penn Station at around 6:30 AM and walked to Rockefeller center (about half an hour walk--she has short legs). We weren't right on the first row but we were pretty close. The cameras go out to the plaza about every half an hour so the people that came in that day would get tired of waiting and get hungry, so there was a pretty good turnover. As they would leave we found that we could inch closer to the front. After about an hour and a half of standing there, we were able to cycle our way up to the front of the crowd right behind the personalities. My mom--who has never really been out much--got to shake hands with Al Roker, Meredith Viera (who is incredibly beautiful in person) and the other guy who sits in for Matt Lauer. It was really a good day for her. My dad stayed at home and taped the whole thing so they have something to remember it by. Once all that happened, we found that just like those before us, we got hungry and there wasn't too much left to see there. No need to stand there and wait another half hour for them to come back out again--we walked down to the Empire State Building and spent an hour or so on the observation deck taking pictures. Good times.

Whenever we go to NY, I get my wife drunk at night. For the obvious reason, yes, but also so that she'll have a hangover in the morning and won't want to go to the morning shows.
