According to Newsday Mike and the Mad Dog may not be around to celebrate their 19th anniversary in Sept. I never knew they were bickering again, but apparently things behind the scenes have gotten very icy over the past few months. I remember they came very close to splitting in the mid 90s but managed to work through it, and even became closer in the aftermath. This feud seems pretty real if you can believe what it says in the article. If the show ends it will really kill WFAN who lost a ton of add revenue after Imus left. Mike and the Mad Dog are easily the highest earners left on the station. This could cost them quite a few dollars.

Someone summed it up the best, and they called Francesca and Russo "sports geeks". I find their show to be unlistenable. I listen to Carton and Boomer in the mornings, and then flip it off.

I would sooooo love to have new blood in the afternoons. PUT BENINGO IN THERE.

I like it better when Russo is on his own. No Mike to reign him in, so he goes on the ridiculous rants for hours. I think a year or two ago he did an entire 3 hour Saturday show on how crazy the critics were who said "WE Are Marshall" wasn't a good movie.

I really hope Chris stays. I put Chris Russo's live commercial reads right up there with some of the funniest commercials I've ever heard. On a par with the buddays Chadabugre spots. Of course Chris' humor is totally unintended. I remember him doing a live read for San Gabriel Pinot Grigot where I laughed for ten minutes straight afterward. He just kept calling it over and over Sane-Gabrielli-Pee-Not-Grill-e-o stumbling over each word like a drunken Big A.

Dig Mad Dog, can't stand Mike.

Actually, I don't mind Mike so much, but he is kind of an asshole. He's out of that weird "manly men" club where nothing they say is wrong, along with Bobby Knight and Parcells.

I can see how he would grate on Chris' nerves.

I cant stand their show

they love telling the callers they are wrong and Mike gets a kick at looking down on callers

I hate the fan and their gimmick on air personalities

I kinda like Sommers (because I met him a few times) plus he is so pro Rangers & Mets

But the best personality is is Richard Nere, simple sports talk from a non negative person who knows his stuff

Chris is a friend of the family and is a cool dude. But man does the whole "Mad Dog" character bug the shit out of me.

But they do know how to get the listeners in, so I'm pretty surprised that WFAN would let them go without a fight.

PD
06-22-2008, 02:33 PM
article seems like a whole lot of speculation.

Fatso (Francessa) bugs me with his "I'm an expert in everything" attitude.

As Towelie alluded to, Mad Dog is a character; and sometimes its funny, sometimes its just annoying.

However-
a) as the article mentions Russo is signed through Sept 2009, and
b) M&MD have billing power and "influence"; it would be tough for WFAN to lose the show.

I agree. I love Neer's common sense approach to each topic. His music knowledge is second to none (sorry Earl). I like Summers the most. I love BBQing and listening to Steve. Benigno's career is taking off... Not bad for a former caller, right Dave? Carlin is great also. I love his stuff on SNY as well. I got tired of M&TMD years ago but I listened to their play-by-play of the golf playoff last week on the train. It was riveting.

they are basically the only two people who can keep me listening to sports talk for 4 hours straight. they pontificate and they annoy me but i stick with it, and i love the picks in the fall. they are wrong most of the time but its still something i go out of my way to listen to

They do seem to be more relaxed when they are doing a solo show.

That said, Mike makes $1.4 million and Russo makes $1.3 million a year. Where are either of them going to make that kind of money? These things have a way of being worked out, I think they're going to stay right where they are.

At this point between their radio career, their TV show, Mike's TV show(s), Chris's books ect.

I think they probably would just sit around and talk sports with people for a lesser price, as long as they get what they want along the lines of individual creative control.

I hate to bring this back to the original topic but Mad Dog was pretty adamant yesterday in saying that the show will go on. If you think about it, why would they walk away now while they're still very popular? Everybody involved would stand to lose a great deal of cash. They are due to be on together July 11th. They are both pathetic and self indulgent on their own, but Mad Dog would self destruct first. He has no friends with teams or in the business and Mike would be much easier to find a partner that works. Russo is an entertaining idiot, but at the same time an intense interviewer. He rarely lets someone off the hook, but in the sports world, it is often seen as disrespect and you won't get a second chance. They are clearly better together, but it would be fun to see what happens if they split. Ian Eagle would be a good guy to pair with Mike. Please no Carlin, Adam Schein or other douches. Carlin is a big fatso who clearly never played a sport in his life, Schein is radio mercury.

I don't think they really do sports talk radio.

They have stuff like MLB Home Plate and the NFL Channel, but they've sunk next to no money into the XM Sports Nation channel.

He'll end up in some market. Part of the problem, though, is that he just sounds WAY too New York. That wouldn't play well a lot of places.

ESPN Radio makes sense, or if he went to another local market, maybe Florida where there's a large NY presence, or some place like San Fran where he at least has a tie to the scene there.

Kim Jones certainly does not suck. She's got a great radio personality and she actually knows her shit, ESPECIALLY when it comes to football. Plus she works GREAT with Carlin. Every time I hear them paired up on the Fan I listen.

In Francesa's egotistical mind, he's got to think that he's "won". The problem is, Mad Dog made the show. The energy level of the show is going to drop, and it's just going to suck. Who the fuck wants to listen to Francesa drone solo? Maybe on Sunday mornings before Football, but not every day. ESPECIALLY given Francesa's habit of yelling at callers.

They made a mistake.

Idiots.

spadanko

Jones definitely knows her stuff, just not a fan of her personality. I do like Carlin though.

Some quotes from m&md

"I think we should take a step back for a second and be proud of the fact that he and I, despite our battles sometimes over 19 years, put together one of the great shows in radio history,'' Francesa said Thursday night. "It is something I'll be proud of for the rest of my life."

Said Russo Thursday night: "I loved that show."

As much as they have become a caricature of what a sports radio show should be, I have to admit that I've been listening to them for as long as I can remember. I'm a radiophile now and (in addition to Stern) Mike & Chris are mostly to blame.

WFAN was the only radio station my father listened to in the car as far back as I can remember, and when I began driving in 1991, it was the first station I programmed. Further back than that, when I was 14 & had my first summer job, the first thing I bought with my initial paycheck was a quality Walkman to wear on the trip to the bus stop to listen to Stern in the morning & WFAN on the way home from school.

At this point, I only listen to FAN when I'm in someone else's car & don't have the XM available to me, but this is still a bit of a sad day.

And I've gotta give Mikey a lotta cwedit for doing a good job giving Chris (& the show itself) it's sendoff in the first 20 minutes of the show today. Then, putting an even bigger collar on his enormous ego, he had Chris on the phone to say a quick goodbye. Chris even got choked up for about 45 seconds & Mike said something funny to help Chris out of giving a John Elway-ish blubbering moment.

Oh Christ, now Mike's got Russo's dad on & Tony's obviously choked up & he damn near broke Mike down. This is rough stuff, but it's the end of an era in NY radio & as infrequently as I tune in these days, I'm glad I got the chance to listen today.

I'm going to go see if I can find that old Simmons article on Mike & Dog and give myself a good laugh & remember the old days.

So long Doggie, as many times as I've wanted to choke you through the radio, you will be missed (and both of yours & Mike's solo shows will likely suck).

I listened to them only sporadically these past 19 years,
but they were definitely a staple in NY sports discussion.

People move on, especially for more money.

I havent read the whole thread, so I dunno if it's been said,
but hearing the news, and seeing this clip on tv,
I couldnt help but compare it to if (God forbid) this same thing were to happen to our R and F.

Fez of course would be the guy crying, and Ron throwing out a joke to change to mood...

Perhaps because of this thought, I'm more upset over Mike and Mad Dog than I should be.

By DAVID HINCKLEY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

So long-time WFAN (660 AM) co-host Chris Russo is off to Sirius, in another one of those deals that makes you wonder exactly where satellite radio gets all its money, and I'm listening to Mike Francesa delivering Friday's eulogy for the Mike and the Mad Dog show.

And he gets to the part about how "someone" told him this was like the Beatles breaking up.

And I'm thinking, y'know, that's the one trouble with Francesa. He's too modest.

Oh, sure, there's a Beatles connection. The Beatles did their last show at Candlestick Park, and Russo's favorite team played there. Whenever I think of the Beatles, I always think of Mike and the Mad Dog. It's an automatic.

But the Beatles analogy isn't enough. It's like a fly ball that dies at the warning track.

The John, Paul, George and Ringo Beatles lasted just seven years. MMD ran almost 20. The Beatles may have had a few hit records, but how did they do with men 25-54? No one talks about that. Ever wonder why not?

No, I say the breakup of Mike and the Mad Dog can't be compared to the trivial fissure of some mere entertainment outfit. Simon and Garfunkel? Martin and Lewis? Britney and Kevin?

Don't make me laugh.

Even if Francesa is too modest to point it out, the only decent analogy for the loss of Mike and the Mad Dog is the breakup of the Holy Roman Empire.

The HRE, for those who were listening to some other station, started with Charlemagne in 800 and ended with Francis II in 1806.

I won't get into which one is Francesa and which one is Russo.

Let's just point out that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, Mike and the Mad Dog were more popular than the Beatles, and you do the math.

Everyone keeps talking about them being local, but I don't see it that way.

Francesa was part of CBS Sports before and during the show.

They were both part of nationally syndicated weekend shows while doing the weekday show (The NFL NOW for Fran, Mad Dog used to do a syndicated football show wth Boomer). The YES network is all over the country and people listened/watched them there ever day.

Mad Dog is on Letterman all the time. He does his rants for NBC Sports.

They are not your typical "local" radio show.

Missed it.... what was he rambling about

It was a pretty weird rant that last about two segments.

He started bitching by saying 'this is the biggest news story in this city of the year, and no one has tried to interview me once.'

Then he moved to saying Russo has more friends in the media, which is why the critics have trashed him since the breakup.

Then he tried to say he had no ill feeling towards Russo and wished him well, but would immediately follow it, each time he said it, by saying his solo show on the weekends doubled the audience of Russo's solo show on the weekends.

Then he started making vague allusions to how much money he's made over the years and how Russo's contract doesn't compare to what he's banked.

Then he said 800 times he's the only guy in New York with three #1 radio shows.

Then he said he doesn't need to work with anyone, but he's working on bringing someone in, because he wants to share the wealth (basically akin to the O&A Golden Ticket rant when they first showed up on XM)

And he ended by taking a shot at Mel Karmazin saying he should be more worried about his stock being 74 cents than taking shots at him.

All in all, very, very, bizarre.

I do have to say, from what I have heard so far. Dog isnt bad on the XM/Sirius show. I think getting to talk about shit outside NY which he hated helps him

Judging by his commercials, he's worse than ever. Man, are they THE WORST.

I haven't listened to sports radio in a while, but the local shows tend to be the most stale, especially in NY where the only local college sport of any consequence is St. John's basketball.

I agree. I've been listening to the show and it's good. Mad Dog transitions really well between guests and people in studio. I always found Mad Dog likable and entertaining, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

Of the 2 I always liked Russo better I guess because he wasn't a NY homer but there were times when he could be annoying.

I'e listened a few times so far and he seems about the same.

He does give off an uncomfortable feel when he talks about subjects that you don't think he cares enough about or hasn't researched enough.

He was talking about college football yesterday, specifically Georgia, and he was mispronouncing names and the points he made seemed to be right out of the media guide.

Obvioulsy a guy can't be on top of every single fact of every team in every sport but as I said it had an awkward call.

Does anybody know what happened to the show that was in his current time slot ?

Mike & Murray.

I enjoyed them when I got a chance to listen.

They made fun of the search for a new partner. He just played the clips and completely overreacted, what a douche.
