Police in Queens were searching Thursday for two pit bulls that attacked another dog and its owner as they walked along the street. NY1’s Queens reporter Ruschell Boone filed the following report.
Still bloodied from the attack, Joshua Rosenblatt of Astoria says he's thankful that both he and his one-year-old mixed chow bitch Phie Phie Bear weren't killed after being attacked by two pit bulls.
“These two dogs came straight at us and started mauling her and I was trying to pull her away and I couldn't get her away,” said Rosenblatt.
Rosenblatt said the incident happened while he was walking his dog on 24th Avenue near 27th street. He said the dogs bit him on his hand and ripped into Phie Phie Bear who was severely injured in the attack.
“Her chest was torn on both sides and lots of facial injuries. I'm not sure what's internal since all I saw was the chest ripped open,” said Rosenblatt.
Rosenblatt says he tried to fight off the dogs but he was no match for what he says were 140 pound animals.
“I was just screaming for help over and over, trying to get as many people involved as possible,” said Rosenblatt.
Workers inside a deli ran out to help him and his dog. Some passersby on the street also came to his aid.
“I tried to help. I threw my coffee but still it didn't work. So after a while, the people tried to help, but they were huge pit bulls,” said a local.
“We were just throwing hot water, hot water, and finally the dog broke loose and a guy came on the street and beeped a horn and they ran. But the small dog was in trauma,” said another.
After undergoing surgery, Phie Phie Bear is expected to live, but the attack has some residents and Queens Councilman Peter Vallone concerned. Although dog experts say training, not breed, determines whether a dog is dangerous, Vallone wants pit bull ownership banned in the city.
“The city really needs to do a lot more than it’s been doing to protect us from dangerous dogs like these,” said Vallone.
Neighbors said they believed the dogs came from a house on 27th Street. When police went by neither the dogs nor the owner of the house was there. They say their investigation will continue."

With a name like Phie Phie Bear the dog probably tried to commit puppy-cide by crawling into the pit bulls mouth.

140 pound pitbulls? either that guy is straight up lying or those arent pitbulls. even 70 pounds is a stretch. Pure blooded pit bulls are only 35-50 pounds.

Good call.. 140lbs sounds more like a Rottweiler perhaps?

This is weird. I just found out tonight, the guy who used to live across the street from me, woke up to his next door neighbor's pit bull busting through his front door. It killed his Pomeranian. Whether you agree that pit bulls are too dangerous or not, people who don't control them, then have them hurt others, should be severely punished.

I agree that people who don't control their dogs (particularly pitbulls) should be severely punished. I can't help but believe that when these things happen and they attack other dogs or people (usually children) that it's just genetic with these dogs and something just snaps in their head. You always hear the owners say that up until the point that the dog ate a baby's arm that the dog was a docile creature. It can happen with any dog but you really hear it more with this breed than any other.

Pit bulls are a nut breed, i had one for almost 3 years. Never hit it, always gave it plenty of exercise, treated it great. For almost 3 years he was the perfect dog. He was intimidating , but also very, very friendly to people and other dogs. Then when he was almost 3 he tried to hump my roomates son that was visiting, I told him to stop he just started to growl and snip at me. I finally got him to calm down. 2 days later he almost bit the mailman , who had petted him 100's of times. A week later I was in my back yard and he started to get very aggressive with me, i got him kind of calmed downand went inside. Them he started to run into the back door, he did it 5 times. I opened the door and went outside to play with him . i was throwing balls to him , then the dummy ran through the wood fence, turned around ran through it again and tried to attack me . I shot him 4 times before he finally stopped trying to get to me.

any dog can have a crazy temper an snap at anytime...i had a german shepard mix who sounds just as crazy as the other stories with the attacking and biting (but she ended up getting hit by a car thats why shes not around anymore) now i have a pitbull and i know if i let her run loose she goes nutz and starts running like a crazy dog (not that shed bite anyone) thats why shes on a lease...all we can do is try to understand our dogs and do the best we can, if those dogs were loose its not the dogs fault they saw that bitch dog, its the owners fault...you shouldnt be able to ban a dog breed, if so i should be able to ban black people for always door dinging my car with their shitty cars...is that fair NO! ban careless people from owning them, not the wonderful breed....which i might say ive had my dog for a few years now and i have no problem putting my face and hands in her mouth (frequently like 20 times a day) im kinda a creep though im borderline beastiality hehe

I had a dobie/pit and he was completely out of control, but that is completely my families fault for being so fucking crazy. If a dog doesnt have a strong pack leader he becomes aggressive cause h thinks he should be pack leader. Because my family was always fighting, he thought leader was up for grabs.

While 140 is gigantic for a pit bull, the three that attacked my wife a few years back were 80, 90, and 90. Pure-bred pit bulls are one thing, but there has been a decided effort among seedier members of our society to breed pitbulls away from the animal-aggressive yet human-loving 35-45 pounders of the past to 100 pound human-aggressive beasts. While this technically makes them a mixed breed, the term "pitbull" in our lexicon is coming to mean these dangerous new ones, with "pit bull" referring to pure breds. Go to your local animal shelter, and you will probably find that the majority of dogs there are pit mixes, with very few resembling pure breds.

My dog is really hard to control, but the reason she's never hurt anybody is strictly because I have never let it happen (I'm choosing to not count the time she bit my lesbian friend, because that never would've happened if she didn't insist on meeting my dog). I am extremely vigilant when we walk through our neighborhood, making sure nobody's popping out from behind a car, and that there are no kids trying to come over and pet her, and definitely making sure no dogs come near her. It breaks my heart to hear these stories because it's not the dog, it's the people who train them to be that way, or allow them to be that way. These people shouldn't be allowed to keep dogs, and sure as shit shouldn't be allowed to have kids. Blech.

I adopted her and found out pretty much that day that she has fear aggression. She was abandoned and most likely abused. I am a great dog trainer! I've been training dogs all my life, but I've never dealt with a dog with fear aggression and will admit that I don't know how to "fix it", but we've certainly learned to live with it. She goes in the basement when friends come over and I just bought a shock collar, so hopefully she'll improve with that too. Bottom line is, I'm committed to making things work with her because I love her with all my heart. I also grew up with dogs so I understand the amount of commitment and responsibility that comes with having a dog, especially a big one.
