I have a couple of friends from the carribean, Trinidad and Jamacia. I've been around when thier families were over a couple times and was a little shocked to hear how much they hate gays. Like violently hate gays, it's more than just run of the mill homophobia we grew up with as kids. It's like I make a typical gay joke and then an uncle will jump in and say something like putting them in prison and tortured and everyone nods their heads. Ok, that's not quite what I was thinking but OK.

Wow. Maybe they're just really good at dead-pan humor which would make them hilarious.

I wonder how Jamaicans feel about non-local gays? Tourists bring in a lot of money so I'd be willing to bet they let them be. One of my lesbian friends is a white Jamaican and nobody bothers her, and it's pretty obvious she's a lesbian. Then again, the gay tourists are probably sticking to resorts?

Remember that whole fiasco a while back when Buju Banton's song "Boom Bye Bye" was climbing the charts until someone realized it's a song about hunting down and killing gay people? Here's a sample, in the patois -- "batty bwoy (boy)" is a slang term for gay people, by the way:
