View Full Version : A shape-shifting skyscraper?!?

My God. Dubai is the greatest place on Earth:
The 80-story Dynamic Tower, described as the "world's first building in motion," will also be the first skyscraper constructed from prefabricated units, according to a press statement released by New York-based architect David Fisher's Dynamic Group.
Each floor would be capable of rotating independently, powered by wind turbines fitted between each floor.

As cool as that is, for someone like me who is terrified of heights, I feel nervous and woozy just thinking about being in that thing.

I was reading somewhere too that people could park their cars in there.
Plus it harnesses the power of the wind for wind power.

QFT. I'm as bad as Fez, and just thinking about how it would feel being in a building while it is turning, no matter how slow, makes my tummy hurt. And add that I would be way up high in the building while this is happening, I would hope someone would lace my Dramamine with cyanide before I got into the elevator.

I was actually talking to a coworker of mine yesterday about all the new buildings going up in Dubai.
He too thought they were amazing and how they must have so much money to be able to build some of this shit.
Personally, I don't think it has so much to do with the fact that Americans/ Canadians cannot afford such architecture; I think it's more that the North American building codes and Safety Standards are so much higher that the approval for one of these buildings would not happen over here.
But their buildings sure are nice to look at.

You know those terrorists over there are just jerking off, and marking their calendars for the ground-breaking ceremony. Better them then us. I say, let's build the "freedom" (yech!) tower real quick and quiet like, and let this building get all the attention. Hell, we should send GW over to host the opening ceremonies, with a big "Mission Accomplished-Bring it On" banner behind him. It'd be the best thing he ever did to keep terrorists away from us.

The rich guys there got rich because of oil, but they're actually smart enough to realize the oil is going to run out, so their idea was to make tourism the #1 money maker, which is why they keep sinking all this money into these ridiculous things that turn out awesome.
Is Dubai actually a terrorist target? I can't imagine it would be. I hope AJ shows up soon and actually adds facts to this conversation.

This is probably the smartest post in this thread aside from Mojo's original. I think people need to better educate themselves on Dubai and what goes on over there. It's a fucking incredible place.

Also, they don't have deal with unions and can pay expat workers slave wage prices.

Correct.

It would be a viable target: lots of scantily clad Westerners drinking booze on the sacred Arabian peninsula...That said, terrorists will attack wherever they see an opportunity to do so be it Dubai, Bali or Key West. I have to believe that the UAE gov't recognizes this and has stepped up security.
I haven't been to Dubai in almost 3 years. I need to go back and see how much has changed since then.

An amazing building but I can't imagine it running smoothly all the time. What if one floor gets "stuck"? Would the others keep moving? Plus there would probably only be one elevator bank. But what do I know? I build with legos.

Hey, they may have rotating skyscrapers, but are they building giant vibrators like we are here in Chicago?
Behold, the Chicago spire, soon to be the world's tallest residential building:
http://www.chicagoarchitecture.info/CAI/Images/NearNorthSide/ChicagoSpire-004.jpg
Apparently the minimum price is $750,000 for a loft and $40 million for the penthouse. About half the units have sold aready.

Yeah no one called him on it either. He went on to tell a couple of Indian jokes that made no sense because everyone was thinking arab.
Is Dubai acually a target? They already have many much taller buildings than NYC and they've been fine, I don't even remember hearing any viable threats. Besides this building is only 80 stories. They might have a religions objection to it as it is the most dildo looking building to date.

The Dude! apparently does not abide.
It's not unthinkable, but it's ridiculous to think that just because a huge building is being built someone is going to try and blow it up and that there's anything beyond an extremely remote chance of anything like that ever happening to the Dubai rotating skyscraper. And I used quotes because everyone is talking like "the terrorists" are this club of supervillains sitting around plotting to destroy landmark buildings. They aren't. 9/11 is the extreme exception. The WTC was targeted because of what it symbolized, where it was and to maximize property/financial/loss of life damage. This thing is just goin to be a dumb residential building that doesn't mean shit outside of its gimmick, just like thousands of other huge and indulgent skyscrapers around the world that never have been and never will be blown up.

A shape-shifting skyscraper?!?
How about a See-Through Skyscraper? (http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/02/the-see-through-skyscraper/)
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/09/02/nyregion/See-Through_Skyscraper_(Dun.jpg
Once in a while, however, when the light and the angles are just right, a skyscraper can come close to vanishing.
That happened last Thursday, when the 52 floors of 7 World Trade Center faded into the cloud-flecked blue of a late summer afternoon. Its masonry neighbors (140 West Street and 90 West Street) stood out in contrast.
