I believe that's a fantasy novel by Ursala K Le Guin (sp?) I'm pretty sure it won a Nebula or Hugo award.
Although I love Le Guin's writing style I think that comparing her to Tolkien can only lead to disapointent. I think a better comparisson is to R K Rawling.
This book (one of a series) is about a young wizard student (like Harry Potter) who somehow screws up and releases an evil shadow who wants to take over his body. I recall this shadow somehow threatening the planet as well.
The magic in the book is considerably darker than that in Harry Potter.
Let me know if you like it.

I had to read this for Theology Literature class of all things about 2 years ago at Villanova. Although the reading was simple and easy, I am not a fan of the fantasy novels...and it kinda lost me in the second book in the series, it just got too out there for me. that is true thouhg, it was ursula K LeGuin. Ah memories.
Someone please make me a new faggy Sig Pic, mine was eaten. Thanks.

SHEEPLVR - I'm glad you read the book and liked it.
It's a good idea to occassionaly read something in a genre you wouldn't ordinarily choose as it broadens your horizons and might even expand your interests.

I loved the Ursula LeGuin book "The Lathe of Heaven". They made it into a movie on PBS in the 1970's that still gives me the creeps to this day. They just put it out on video, check it out if you can.

They rebroadcast Lathe of Heaven on PBS last year.
The story of course is the main issue, but the effects are comical by todays standards. I especially liked the flying saucers that looked like Big Macs (Wilted lettuce and all.)

If you liked the Wizard of Earthsea, there are 3 other books that are a follow up to it. The next one is Tombs of Atuan.
