View Full Version : Percolator vs Drip Coffee Maker

My chick got a percolator at her bridal shower today. This is the one thing I insisted we put on the registry because I am convinced that percs make better coffee than the automatic drip style coffee maker. I am very excited to try it out tomorrow.
Am I crazy, or does the old-school percolator make better coffee?

I like percs for the sound and the smell, but drip is more consistent. Every coffee expert I've talked to says that drips are the way to go. I also used to think that the permanent filters for drips were better, but someone convinced me that paper (unbleached) filters are better for filtering out certain acids in the coffee.

Explain the French Press to me. I don't think i've ever seen somebody use one.

You basically just pour hot water on top of coffee grounds and then press all of the grounds down to the bottom with the filter. I can't really tell the difference, but I think the coffee snobs say that the french press gets you the best flavor.

No no no. I've tried the tea thing several times, and it's just not the same. It doesn't matter that they say there's actually more caffeine in tea than in coffee, it just doesn't satisfy.
So go start your own Tea appreciation thread. Spread a couple of doilies around, put out a couple of scones.....god I hate a scone. It's the doorstop of pasteries. Can it even be called a pastry? I don't think so.
Anyway, maybe you can make a couple of cucumber sandwiches, Teaboy, then sit and pet the cat and wait for the Tea appreciators to come flooding in for a spot. But not in here. This is a Coffee thread. Joe. Java. 40 Weight.
Cabbage rolls and coffee. Ja ja ja.

Spanish coffee is the best, by far..
It's gotta be made in a dirty Dominican Bodega that smells like roach spray and it should be straind through a pair of pantyhose that haven't been replaced since Sammy Sosa hit 66 home runs..
Guaranteed to have you on the bowl in twenty minutes or less..:flush:

It's the only coffee so FUCKING HARDCORE you can't drink it all because there's still grinds in the bottom.

I had a roommate from India. He would make really strong coffee, and then put it in the microwave as soon as it came out of the machine because it wasn't hot enough for him. He comes from a country where 120 degree heat is NORMAL, yet the coffee wasn't hot enough. I don't get it.

French Press is the way to go, but as far as electric coffee makers go, I think percolators are superior to drip.

We have three percolators in the closet for special occasions. They do make better coffee, no doubt about it.

My brother recently went to an auction of items from a failed bar/restaurant. He noticed a big box with a small Bodum french press (the single serving size that they use at some restaurants) on top. He uses one, so he knew what it was. Only one other guy there knew what it was. He was the guy at auctions, that is the "know it all" guy, who doesn't bid, but tries to tell people what things are worth. My brother actually stepped on the guys foot and told him to shut up.
Bro won that lot for $20. In the lot... 48 Bodum french presses that sell on Amazon for $20 EACH! He's been giving some away to friends. Selling some for 5-10 bucks each. He gave me one yesterday.

I learned in Starbucks school that the French Press is best - but is too time consuming. Truthfully my mini-Mr.Coffee drip, if the water's filtered, makes great coffee.
Then again, I'm much less the coffee snob I used to be. Unless I get the time to make it up to a good gourmet shop, I brew WalMart brand in a can and it's pretty good.
I'd go with better filtered water over a particular device any day.

I totally agree. I have 5gal bottles delivered and the water tastes a thousand times better than the NJ sludge that comes out of the tap.
It's also important to get some air into the water either by dispensing it from up high or pouring it back and forth a few times before going into the coffee maker.
For me, a Krups drip with Melitta #4 unbleached paper filters.

This is the best coffee maker I have ever owned ... beats the percolator I had. Fresh grind every time ... I use unbleached paper filters, well water through the in-line filter, then the Brita.

Mine (http://www.mrcoffee.com/Product.aspx?pid=108)
Has a built in water filter to dechlorinate the water and use a reusable filter.
Drip is easier, press rocks, and perc is great. It depends greatly though on the quality of the coffee and the water you use.
Instant coffee is for fags and little teenage girls.

We only use the drip coffee maker when we have company. If we are just making coffee for the two of us we use an electric percolator that was my parents. It is awesome.
