Dear Oracle,
Why is XM's online radio blocked at work? I finally unpacked earbuds that work, and this is what I get? No radio? After not listening since January?
The filter specifically says:
"You cannot access the following Web address:
http://xmro.xmradio.com/
If there is a legitimate business need to unblock the site, please email a compelling business case to the email address listed below: xxxussiteevaluation.us.xxx@xxxxxxx.com
The site you requested is blocked under the following categories: Internet Radio/TV"
So Mr/Mrs. Oracle, please help me find a way around this, or aid me in writing the most compelling letter ever.
boo.
-Lil' Miss Skelly
PS:
Yes, i'm not an idiot and x'd out parts of the email that would identify where my fancy gov't job is. At least everyone knows that i'm still in the US....unfortunately. :glurps:

it's been blocked at my job as well, stupid websense (although i can get to sirius)
youtube's blocked, but break isn't
if you have a login page, try typing https:// instead of http:// ... it works for me to get into gmail
or try to get real chummy with the IT guys

As an IT guy, also who uses websense, and who is also blocked..... if you're savvy enough try adjusting your host file (Found at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc). Basically it references the IP address of XMonline to a website that isn't blocked. For example you can enter www.disney.com (http://www.disney.com), but you are accessing XMonline.

but if you get caught doing that at a government job, you will most likely be escorted out the door

It's not a bandwidth issue, it's a content one. Since a lot of people don't listen to the radio without headphones at work, if you're listening to O&A or Howard, it can run into Human Resources headaches.

sounds like a bandwidth issue. do you know how much bandwidth streaming radio uses?

it is 100% a bandwidth issue. well maybe not 100%, but 90%.
if everyone was listening to radio online, watching video's and doing other shit, it would consume so much of the companies available bandwidth it would be a problem.

I was told by my company's IT guy that it was a content issue. That being said, multiple radio stations at my company are unblocked but XM and SIRI are blocked.

oh well, if I can't get IT to unblock, I never gave away my Nexxus, so i can reactivate the booger.

If you know what you are doing set up an ssh tunnel back to a pc at home (or somewhere else) and use your own proxy.
That's what I did at my job.

I believe XM uses a 128 kb stream.

My XM Tuner widget says 64 kb.

close--- 4 bandwidths
Well acutally it was a rhetorical question, but if that 128kbps # is true, then it is a lot of bandwidth. It is easy to listen at home when you are the only one using the connection, but at work there are thousands of people using the same connection (albeit a considerably bigger connection) when you are at work
I also wouldnt suggest trying to get around it......... if they are against you listening for bandwidth purposes, then they will still catch you for using a lot of bandwidth (and getting around the filter). If they are against it for content reasons that is different.......... much harder to track
Only thing you can do is talk to IT or suck it up
