View Full Version : Would You Pay $10 to Tour a Whole Foods Market

So, anyway, there's a Whole Foods Market opening very close to my apartment tomorrow. I know some people are pretty excited about this, but whatever, it's a better grocery store I guess. Yesterday, they opened the store up for preview tours to get the neighborhood excited. The thing is that they were charging $10 for the privilege of getting to check out the place before everyone else. The money went to charity, which is cool, but I just don't see the allure of paying for a tour of a grocery store that will be open two days later. Am I missing something? Is Whole Foods Market really that great? It's just a more upscale grocery store, right?

Were they allowing you to buy, or just walk around the place?

If they're allowing you to buy, it's akin to Costco or BJs.

If it's just to walk around a store...that's quite weird. I would have to think you get something out of it.

Maybe some free samples, at the very least.

Whole foods has a great selection at double the price of a regular chain market.Everything is "supposed" to be organic. The customers are usually too cool for the room,no blood for oil, tree hugging, self important douchbags that will spend $10 a pound for red peppers.
But to each their own.
It's a nice market ,but to spend $10 dollars to look at a six dollar head of lettuce.I would pass.

I dated and was engaged to a vegetarian for a while. She always shopped at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods for stuff that was double the price, and her excuse was like "This came from something, and it wasn't chemically treated." or "This company doesn't allow its workers to use gloves from this company, becuase they are fur supporters."

I thought she was nucking futs the majority of the time.

Their products are more expensive, usually less portions....and they charge 10 bucks for a tour....

That's ten bucks can go towards Wendy's 99 cent Chicken nuggets instead...

The more I think about it, the less problem I see.

It was probably more of a party, meeting potential customers/meeting the managers, etc.
Wine/Cheese, nothing fancy for 10 bucks, but probably not a simple "tour".

Cheapest charity party ever, I say.

Yeah, I was looking to see if there was any info on what your $10 got you, and wasn't able to find anything. I did find some website giving giddy coverage to the new store.

Whole Foods has free samples all the time anyway. I think the prices are high because you are paying for the cheap bastards who are in there trying to scam a meal. I am not that impressed with the one near me. I don't think it has a Schwarma Station, though.

You probably do get some coffee or something but that is stupid.

I like Whole Foods for the meats after reading Fast Food Nation. Fuck ConAgra. Hard to find things they have - great WF brand vitamin selection. They did a great job of convincing their regulars that they're high society by overspending on organic pet fucking ... collars or whatever else you'd waste your money on there.

To just walk around a freaking snooty grocery store, I wouldn't pay 2 cents to do that. However, if they had things like tastings or some sort of cooking, food or drink demos, $10 probably would be a good deal. People pay good money for those sorts of events.

From mikeyboys linked article.

Feast your eyes, folks, on Whole Foods Tribeca's shawarma station. Named Shish!, it will be open 11am to 10pm daily for your snacking needs. On the menu: falafel; fried eggplant and cauliflower; turkey, lamb and beef shawarma, lamb kofta and grilled lamb and chicken kebabs. There will also be a generous selection of meze, which will rotate daily—expect things like tabbouleh, hummus, fattoush and foul moudammas (broad beans).

I went in today (when it was free). The place is pretty massive. I got a couple of things that were on sale that weren't bad price-wise. I got 2 pounds of organic strawberries for $5.99 and a pound of scallops for $12 (expect a thread from me today regarding suggestions for scallops preparation. You food folks never let me down).

FUCK WHOLE FOODS!!

Let me digress..

Not so long ago, my lady crushed the knee surface of her femur during a fall while jogging.. Basically, she compressed her knee so badly, the tibia punched a hole in bottom of the femur. Unfortunately for us this type of fracture is pretty rare, and not something that they can handle locally. We had to drive 3 hours to a specialist for orthopedic surgery. During this time, my lady was riding in the car with a splint, but still with an un-set bone in her knee.. Needless to say each bump we drove over was excruciating.

When we got to the hospital the day before her surgery and stayed in a hotel. We decided to get some deli food from Whole Foods because we were hungry and had driven all day. She hobbled into the store on crutches and picked out a salad. She also got some kind of Boston cream pie for dessert. She ate half, I had one bite.

In an hour or so I started to get that gurgling feeling in my guts.. I soon had the diarrhea.
A few minutes later she turned pale and started sweating. She said her stomach hurt, and she needed to crutch her way to the bathroom... It was painful, but possible. She then proceeded to have diarrhea AND convulsive vomiting. ...I handed her a trash bin because she could not turn around to vomit in the toilet. Each convulsion would wrack her knee and the un-set bones inside causing her to cry out in pain. She sat there for 5 hours getting sick, with tears of pain streaming down her face.

..It was truly the most heartbreaking thing I have ever had to watch.

When morning rolled around, her symptoms would not allow her to go into surgery. I had to carry her into the car, and we had to drive back home for another 3 hours with un-set bones in her knee; so we could come back to try again later in the week...

I will never step foot in a Whole Foods again.

For the most part, the food at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's is not any more expensive than any other store. You do, however, have the opportunity to buy items that are of a much higher quality and or organic (if that's important to you, which is not for me) and you'll pay a premium for those items.

I would be surprised if the tour didn't have a wide selection of tastings and the like. It still wouldn't be worth it to me, but if you've never been, I could see it being worth your while.

Lemme clarify by saying that buying higher quality food is indeed important to me, but organic is not. I don't care if the food is irradiated and has been dipped in pesticides as long as it tastes good.

Whole Foods bought out Wild Oats here in Vega$, Baby, so now they've almost got a monopoly on the "healthy food" market. I know a lotta people who work for Whole Foods & apparently the company is very good to it's employees, which is a rapidly vanishing attribute in this country... so good for them!!!

We mostly go to Trader Joe's cuz it's a better deal & they have organic meats & stuff too!
