Yeah I read about that last night. The money it takes to start a wind farm....well this guy can do it. More power to him (pat from moonachie laugh). I suck sometimes...

This guy loves to spend money. He has given millions to the Oklahoma State athletics dept.

I hope the politicians realize how important the crisis is when a life-long oilman admits that we can't drill our way out of this problem.

Yeah, I like the oilman turned alternate energy supporter.
I wish there were more men like him; sure he has an angle, but it's also a pretty good solution. I hope someone listens.

i like this idear a lot

i think that once solar gets to the next generation where its super cheap to produce that solar will be the dominant source of energy for our world

I saw it on ABC Evening News last night.

Few thoughts on this:

a) This is the smartest guy on the planet. Screw the environmental aspect of this. From a money standpoint, laying the infrastructure now for a nationwide Wind Power industry will make the Pickens clan atop the economic food chain permanently. How nobody has done this yet is beyond me. He will absolutely be rolling in money (even more so).

b) It's pathetic that it takes a Texas billionaire oil tycoon who looks like he walked off the set of Dallas to get the ball rolling on this before the government.

c) No matter what happens, nothing really bad can come of this even if the guy fails, we're still in the shitty situation we've always been in, so why not?

My guess is that T. Boone knows that all these magical oil fields that politicians keep telling us will solve everything, like ANWAR, are pretty much bullshit.

Nah, it really wouldn't. Not at all. (http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/beat_the_press_archive?month=06&year=2008&base_name=oil_vs_the_environment_what_is)

Boone has already made his fortune in oil. A drop in prices would not phase him at all (not that prices would ever drop - if Exxon/Mobil can get us to pay over $4.00 a gallon now why would they decrease the price even if we magically found a new supply of oil?).

T. Boone is just trying to get in on the ground floor of the next big power source.

ANWAR has 6 months of oil, of which we couldn't really get to market for at least 8 years.

So yea...it's bullshit.

Wouldn't it be safe to say that.....duh....it's going to take a multi-pronged approach.

Less oil
More solar
More wind
And a large dash of American innovation?

No one said that there were any simple answers but at least someone is willing to do something to get the ball rolling instead of sitting around while looking for new sources of a limited resource.

Just because it doesnt have complex formulas doesnt mean it is simple. Clearly if it was simple, it would've been implemented already......................

sign me up. i think solar and wind are the way to go. after the initial investment, the only cost involved is maintenance and delivery costs (which every current energy source requires anyway). with improved wind and solar generators, we could easily get to the point where cities and individual home-owners could generate all the power they would need locally, which would avoid reliance on our antiquated power-grid and prevent large-scale black-outs.

Nuclear fission is also a great option, but there's more overhead involved, in terms of developing and storing the spent fuels, but still very clean compared to our current "burn-something" methods of generating power.

I propose we start breeding dinosaurs on a remote island in hopes for making fossil fuels for future generations. We could even make it a park and charge tourists to come see the dinosaurs. Ive already talked to the guy that played Newman on Seinfeld and he said he would be willing to be our computer guy but I dont trust him that much. Oh well what could go wrong?

When does the "This guy is crazy" smears start?

Why at the very least there are not simple solar panels that can at least heat water in place of traditional water heaters in most homes is beyond me

But Im sure the smears and we cant do its will start soon

And another big FU to Reagan for pulling off the solar panels from the White House when he got into office. Just Imagine what 20 years of serious development and goverment suppoert would have us

Yeah because a set of Solar Panels on the White House count as serious development. And for the sake of the argument, they weren't removed until 1986 (http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/green/greenblog/2008/06/jimmy_carters_solar_panels_hel_1.html). Apparently, Reagan had better things to do when he got into office.

T. Boone seems like a smart guy considering he's been making money off of energy for nearly 5 decades. A wise investor might jump on his bandwagon early, even if it is just wind.

There is a ton of money in this and I guess this guy figures that we are going to move that way why shouldn't he make a fortune on this just like he has from oil. Alternative energy is going to be the next big money make. GE has been selling these to someone in the midwest, I keep seeing the blades (which are huge) being transported on a regular basis on one of the main highways here in southern IN. I think a few years ago they were trying to put these off shore in the northeast and the people with the nice houses on the ocean pitched a fit. I guess alternative energy sources need to be pretty but hell if it cuts down my costs put one in my backyard next to where I would also like to put my oil well

He did, Carter's panels didn't work so he yanked 'em off and said:

"BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!"

And look what we have now. Hybrids.

Reagan was a genius.

It's probably the perfect investment for a guy like him. It's a heavy expenditure up front, but with very low maintenance he can then count on a nice ROI.

Watching American Psycho, and when Willem Dafoe visits Bateman at his office,
Bateman is pretending to be on the phone, and says "I gotta go. T Boone Pickens just walked in"

Worth a post? Maybe not. But I thought of this thread immediately.

So I see. I was too tired to re-read the whole thread and was afraid of that.

But when I first saw the movie, I had no idea who he was,
and I guess when I first read that post long ago, I didnt make the connection.

Is it weird that he was used as an 80's reference? I really never heard of the guy til now.

During the DNC Convention tonight, I noticed that T. Boone was running his third ad in the Picken's Plan campaign:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gQ30c8IZQR8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gQ30c8IZQR8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

This ad tells me two things:

1. This is a smart man.
2. Money is greater than political affiliation to the uber-rich.

I heard him on NPR yesterday. He is extremely impressive and I am a big fan. I am a Democrat and I never imagined that I would like the guy who financed the Swiftboaters. He has the drive and passion needed to wake up America to how our addiction to foreign oil is screwing the nation. Talk to anyone who knows what he/she is talking about and he/she will say our energy situation is dire and is quickly getting worse. Serious people on both sides of the political spectrum agree that we simply cannot continue consuming energy like we do now. Drilling in ANWAR and other band-aids will help a little but we need a complete overhaul of our energy production, infrastructure, and consumption. I love that Boone sees this as so serious that he has transcended partisan politics by showing up to both conventions.
