Just in case they changed it, the caption under some black farmers read "Putting in the spade-work at one of the charity's gardens"

Yea, you did. But it's from the BBC, and spade most likely isn't considered a derogatory remark in Britain. In fact, I don't think that's considered racist anymore. In this case, a spade really is a spade.
