I'm currently looking for a new job. I currently live in East Brunswick NJ, and just got an opportunity to interview with HBO in NYC. I was wondering if anyone here lives in Central NJ, or further South, and commutes into the city for work and how you like it.

Central Jersey doesn't exist. Please pick a North or South location and perhaps we can move on from there.

I commute from jersey, but more northern (Bloomfield)... but the HBO office is only a few blocks from the port authority, so if you bus it in, you'll have an easy walk. lots of people do it. PLus you can get some extra sleep time in

I did the bus from CNJ, I HATED the bus. It was too unpredictable and would get stuck in traffic a lot.

If you're close to Penn or PA it's not so bad. Unfortunately, I had to bus it into PA, then take 2 subways to get to work and it BLEW. I'd only consider working in the city again if it was close to Penn.

From East Brunswick, you have a couple of options.

You can either take the bus from the Park & Ride on 18 ... or you can trek up to New Brunswick and take the train. Unless you're in a part of EB that would be convenient to go to Jersey Avenue (more parking than NB, but the trains run weird if you're not traveling during rush hour/standard commuting hours.)

Either way, you have to pay for parking.

The advantage to the Park & Ride is that you're right near the Turnpike, so, depending on what your hours are, this could work out just fine.

(Missy - you were commuting from further south ... nearer to Freehold than to New Brunswick, where your only option was the bus ... and some nasty-ass highways that back up like nobody's business. Totally different ball game!)

how do you get to the port then?
do you drive it?
if you wanted to, im guessing you could drive it half way, tne find a park/ride somewhere.
map that shit out.

it might be worth it to drive it up to union city, then take an immigrant bus into pa.. last i remember it, was like 2 bucks.

actually, dawning on me now, they were building a parking lot at secaucus junction (15X) on the pike. you could haul it from 9 to 15x, then take the train in.

Actually I was checking, the Park and Ride is a 2 minute walk from where I live. It's pretty much a 1 block walk and crossing route 18. Hmmm that could work. I told my headhunter to send my resume over anyway.

Yup I drive into the port for work now.

I could carpool with my chick to Downtown Newark and take the train in from Penn. Hmm all these options are easing my worries. SO far I have the option of walking to the Park and Ride, driving to either Edison, New Brunswick, or Secaucus Station, or carpooling to Newark Penn.

I'm getting really excited at the thought of leaving this place.

When I go, I'll pass my bathroom key onto you buddy .

Totally use the park & ride. Check the bus schedules to see how early you'll have to leave your house to get to a job during the hours you're being offered.

Walking it means you're not paying gas, tolls and parking on top of your rail pass.

Plus, EB's park & ride doesn't smell like piss ... Newark-Penn, on the other hand, does.

Badly.

All year round.

And it sucks.

If you do not leave your house by 6:30 AM in the morning you will be in alot of traffic.

i dont know how much "office time" dave has to put in before and after the live show, but it might not be so bad, actually. that and he'll most likely be commuting "off peak", so it'll save a little bit of $.

the commutes like an hour, right? (i think that's what i've heard) that's actually a typical commute in the city.

anyone here get caught up in the nj transit fiasco last night with the lightning caused power outage?

so untrue.

Every1 I know that lives somewhere off the parkway & work a normal job say that if they do not leave by 6-6:30 AM they get stuck in alot of traffic.

If you're driving, yes, absolutely you'll be sitting in traffic if you're coming from a highly populated area and then going TO a highly populated area, like the City.

Sometimes you'll sit in traffic on the bus as well, but for routes that a lot of commuters travel, there's usally a "commuter express" that only stops at major commuter stops rather than the pissant "local" stops, like the QuickCheck or whatever.

There's also the train, for which traffic really doesn't matter. You may not always get a seat, but you'll get to your destination on time...and point & laugh at all the poor schlubs sitting in traffic as you cross over the Parkway.

Lastly, depending on when you need to be at work, there are always "windows" where the traffic isn't as bad.

my FIL drives a limo into the city every morning.
he leaves north caldwell and takes 46 to 3 in every morning.
he leaves at 7 and usually gets in around 7:30.

yes, there are times of traffic, but its not always stopped.

If he's picking up 46 from North Caldwell, he's practically on 3 anyway.

I'd suspect that the only point he hits anything resembling traffic is at the crossings.

And that doesn't really count; it's something you can anticipate and deal with.
