There is much controversey over what has influenced some teens to get violent. Tv/movies/video games vs. their family life. I personally believe that family and parental influence has a stronger influence, but is there truth to the tv/movie/video game argment?

SUNNDOGGY8 - The assertion that TV, movies and video games cause or increase violent behavior has face validity. After all, there are violent acts depicted in all these forums. Because of this, politicians are quick to point their fingers and cite them as the root of all that is evil. I strongly feel that there isn't even a kernel of truth to their assertion.

People have been violent long before TV, movies or video games. Anyone remember the American Revolution? The Crusades? And I don't seem to recall Hitler being a movie buff or playing Doom.

Kids can hurt a greater number of people today because of the nature of the weapons available to them. A kid with a knife cannot do as much damage as a kid with an Uzi. Yet, way to many parents have arsenals lying around the house. What message are they sending their children?

There's a disturbing trend to attribute and lay blame on outside factors for a person's own shortcomings. Parents say, "It's not that I'm a bad parent, my kid was playing Half Life." Students say, "It's not that I didn't study, the test was unfair." Alcoholics say, "It's not that I have no control, it's that I have lots of pressure." This climate allows politicians to place the blame for violence on media and video games. It is a new scapegoat that people can use to affirm that they are not at fault.

Lets take this out of the mouth of a violent teen... hmm.. where can we find a violent teen? Oh look! I happen to be one!

I can easily say that growing up around violence on tv and in music doesnt make me wanna go out and shove a box of razors down an enemies throat but I could see where it becomes easier to digest. You become immune to it just like being hurt alot makes you immune to pain (mental and pysichal.) It becomes normal and not wrong, so the same way someone someone can curse and go "hmm that was a lil wrong.. but oh well.." thats the way it becomes.

I just noticed this post and thought id give my two cents

**Walked through the flame with this pain in my eyes, that's all right cause I'm doubtless, I will survive- ETOWN**

perhaps you were refering to me in that thinly veiled reference to cursing... and the only time I ever feel guilty about cursing is when I do it in front of little children... perhaps the teens of our day only feel bad about shooting someone if its in front of children. I therefore propose that we put little children in violent neighborhoods, then there will be no more war.. good idea right?

"Boston Public", which I have never watched and, therefore, feel free to criticize it, had an episode last night that dealt with the issue of school shootings. I didn't see it, but I'm quite sure it was the most retarded thing in the history of mankind.

For some reason, the general public thinks it's impossible for a child/teenager/youth to be mentally unstable. It must be violence in the media, not the fact that the school system is becoming increasingly impersonal, with much less attention to discipline in ALL areas. We nitpick about prayer in school, a disgusting display of bravado of on the part of religionists--arrgh. I'm too frustated to continue.

A kid shoots up a school, it's violence in the media, if a grown man murders is coworkers, then...well? Just because you're older, doesn't mean you're wiser. You just know how to cover your ass better.
