I went fishing Saturday morning and when I got home, I forgot to take the shrimp/squid bag out of my car. It sat in the hot Florida sun all weekend and when I got in my car Monday morning, I almost vomited. Its been 4 days, and it still is rancid.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to get the smell out?

Drive it off of a pier. You are fucked, dude. Its bad enough to leave minnows in a car, but squid and shrimp takes it to a whole different level.

Didn't the MythBusters do this already with a pig carcass? (http://mythbustersresults.com/episode7)

My opinion? Get a professional cleaning company to clean your car's interior.

Yeah they did but they still couldn't get the smell of two rotting pigs out of the car and ended up selling it for parts (the test was whether they could clean the car enough to be able to resell it).

Rent one of those carpet shampoo/steamers from the supermarket and do the entire interior. Leave the windows down as much as you can and spray this stuff once in a while:

And they did. (See the link to their results in my post; nobody freaking reads links anymore, do they?)

This was shrimp & squid overnight, versus 2 dead pigs sealed in a car, sealed in a trailer, for more than a week.

So, this should be able to be cleaned without needing to disassemble the car.

3 suggestions:

-You'll probably have best results with a professional, but if you want to try it yourself...

-coffee grounds: get a couple cans of coffee, spread out the grounds in the affected area then vacuum them up. They absorb the odor and your car should only smell like coffee grinds for a little while which is much less offensive... not sure how it'll handle fish smell.

-baking soda powder/Pet Fresh carpet freshener: same affect as coffee but much less smelly itself, in fact the Pet Fresh is really pleasant smelling.

I thought this was going to be about "old man stink car smell" which I CAN'T STAND. It makes me instantly car-sick. I have a few friends whose cars smell like old man and I almost threw up after riding with them. I was using my grandfather's old car after he passed away (ancient Crown Vic... wasn't I cool!) and it smelled so bad like old man, I thought I was going to go insane!

I know the old man smell you're talking about. The barber shop I went to in college was full of old men, and it had that smell. I think its from an old type of shaving cream or after shave or something like that. Its not pleasent.

i know if you go fishing, and your hands smell like fish, you rub some lemon juice on them to get rid of the smell...

I carried blue filets home in a duffel cooler and left the empty bag in my trunk. That car was never the same. Febreeze and windows down.

Was it on the carpet or upholstery?

Did the bag leak?

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if the lingering smell is from an isolated spot that you could work on.

I was actually thinking of cutting open some lemons/limes and leaving them in the car in the sun. Either that or go with Laboobs coffee suggestion.

The bag was in a bucket, so none of it leaked onthe upholstery, but when I turn the AC on now, it pumps out a smelly smell.

Lemon might work well... it's a good trick if your dishwasher isn't smelling nice, putting a few cut lemons in with the dishes and running them through the cycle. It eliminates any odor and makes it smell like lemons instead. Not sure how you'd apply this to a car though.

I learned the coffee trick from a Green Beret friend of mine who's great for random useful tips. You just have to leave the grounds on for a little while before you vacuum them up.

I always associate the smell of rotten fish with school field trips to the beach. I'd always get really excited about collecting shells and rocks and clams, only to completely lose interest in them when I got home, leaving them outside to sit and rot in the sun. It really is a fucking awful smell... hopefully something will help!

Turn off the recirculation (or "max ac") because you are sucking the smell into the system and it'll sit in any residual moisture and the filters in there. Ust the regular ac until the smell's gone.

i agree with Liz.
get it professionally cleaned.... and have them (or get it yourself) leave something wonderful smelling in your car.
i like new car smell, or something with a lavender scent. gentle but effective.

and windows open as much as possible.

Back when I worked at the car stereo store we used to do a lot of work with fiberglass in the cars, which stinks and hangs around, our method of choice was leaving the car wide open (doors, trunk, windows, sun roof) with as few extras in it as possible (floormats, etc) in the bay overnight. The nexy day we would detail it. That got rid of most of it. And yeah, no recirc at all, with or without the AC on, you're basically wallowing at that point.
