I ask, o science gurus, is there anything at all to this? Will the world end in 2012 as the Maya predicted and be due to the arrival of a new planet on a 4000 year orbit?

One thing you have to ask yourself when viewing something like this is: What are they trying to sell me on? If this was about science, what's with the social commentary?
Tiamat or Nibiru are not out there.
There existed perturbation in the orbits of the outer planets when using Newtonian physics. But we now live in a post-Einstein world.
These guys have mixed planet X theories with the theory of "Nemesis" Sol's dark companion.

I've been really interested in the topic for a little while, and I don't know what to make of it. Scientists tend to shy away from saying exactly what they think will happen. My question is, is 2012 eally the end? Or is it just another doomsday theory that won't pan out.

It's about 30 years too soon, but there are predictions of a technological singularity - a point in time when we develop computers with AI smarter than us, who will then be able to create even smarter AIs to the point where they are nearly infinitely more advanced than us. At which point we turn into either a leisure society that enjoys the benefits of such advanced machines serving us, or they destroy us.

Oh, and by the way, the planet X thing is bullshit as far as we know. There are theories that there could be a red dwarf or a brown dwarf somewhere beyond the kuiper belt that is on a highly elliptical orbit to the sun, but there is no proof that it exists, just guesswork. Even if one existed, it wouldn't be here by 2012, more like 20,000,000 C.E..
Also, the Mayan calendar is just as bullshit. The Mayans had several calendars and this one doesn't really end, as much as it cycles over. Just like when a year ends, there is no end of the universe, it is simply the next year, day 1. In the mayan calendar, the date is not represented as a day, a month and a year, but as a number of total days since the beginning of the calendar in the mayan vigesimal system (not out familiar decimal, so 20 numbers, not 10). So yesterday was not July 29th, 2008, it was 12.19.15.9.12
That is 12 times 1, 9 times 20, 15 times 360, 19 times 7200, 12 times 144000 days.
So, since the beginning of the calendar, there have been 1870392 days.
Not a very momentous date. Why is December 21, 2012 so important? That's the date when the calendar switches to 13.0.0.0.0 .... ooooh, spooky? Almost as spooky as the year 2000. Nothing will happen, everybody chill.

who gives a shit if you are skeptical, because if it actually happens, what are people going to say to you "haha you were wrong" and then you die? but if your right you get to say "haha told you so bitches"
so its probably best to not giev a shit at all, i mean who gives a shit if its inevitable

There is a theory that our sun is part of a triple star system along with Polaris A & B.
Polaris A & B rotate around each other. It's a cycle that takes thousands of years. When they come close together, the gravimetric forces will effect our sun, therefore our solar system, and Earth.
This is a correlation between mankind's civilizations rising and falling within these cycles.
2012 starts a new cycle. It's also the peak of the sun's sunspot cycle, and there is a good chance for a solar storm, which will fry every electrical object on the planet, knocking us back to the stone age.
And guess what? The Pole star comes to life again. (http://www.physorg.com/news135871831.html)
It's a fascinating theory covered in the book Lost Star Of Myth And Time. (http://www.loststarbook.com/excerpt.shtml)
http://www.loststarbook.com/images/book_photo.jpg
It's just a theory, but the next few years should get interesting.

the world was supposed to end in the year 1000. then 2000. the mayans didn't know shit. there are no experts on the future.
as far as discovering a planet with a 4000 year orbit, that is entirely possible. there are lots of bodies in that Kuiper belt that we have yet to discover. but I doubt that its discovery will have anything to do with the end of our world.

to expand on this thought a little further, it seems that every generation of every culture and society that ever existed thought they were living in the end times. its a very arrogant view to have in my opinion.

I think it's the opposite of arrogant, more like self-loathing. some people *want* the world to end, and will search for anything they can interpret as a sign that it's coming.

the arrogance theory, as you put it, is what the ancients thought, that we pissed off the gods and now they were going to end it all. it's also what the global warming folks would have you believe, that we pissed off mother nature by doing such terrible things as having industry, and now we will die for it.
