5.8 is getting pretty close to good sized. Generally anything over 6.0 will cause some major damage.

A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

I saw a video of a couple of kids playing baseball when the quake hits. It reminded me exactly how I felt during the '89 Loma Prieta quake in the bay area. There isn't any rumbling sound like in the movies, and like Willmore said above, its this fluid rolling motion to the ground. It makes you feel like you've got a fever or are about to pass out until you realize that it isn't you. My buddies and I just kind of looked at each other nervously for a second. The kid in the video who puts his hands on his head must have felt the same way. Interesting also is that the kid who is running doesn't seem to notice because of his own motion.
Sorry, can't remember where the video was. Liveleak I think.

I think that has to do with low frequency waves that the earthquake puts out. I'm not positive, just something I recall reading about.

Increases in mysterious underground tremors observed in several active earthquake fault zones around the world could signal a build-up of stress at locked segments of the faults and presumably an increased likelihood of a major quake, according to a new University of California, Berkeley, study. (http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2009/07/09_tremors.shtml)
They found that after the 6.5-magnitude San Simeon quake in 2003 and the 6.0-magnitude Parkfield quake in 2004, underground stress increased at the end of a locked segment of the San Andreas Fault near Cholame, Calif., at the same time as tremors became more frequent. The tremors have continued to this day at a rate significantly higher than the rate before the two quakes.
The researchers conclude that the increased rate of tremors may indicate that stress is accumulating more rapidly than in the past along this segment of the San Andreas Fault, which is at risk of breaking like it did in 1857 to produce the great 7.8 magnitude Fort Tejon earthquake. Strong quakes have also occurred just to the northwest along the Parkfield segment of the San Andreas about every 20 to 30 years.

I went to USC for my first two years of undergrad and slept through my first earthquake. The second one hit when I was in organic chemistry. At first I thought the guy behind me was pushing my chair but as I looked out the window I noticed the palm trees swaying. The professor calmly put his chalk down, told the class to stay calm and waited for it to stop. And then picked up the chalk and went right back to lecturing.

It annoys me how nonchalant Californians are about earthquakes. They lose their shit when in LA when it rains, or if the temp drops below 60 degrees, but the fact that the very ground they stand on will eventually swallow them hole is treated with disregard. I guess there is nothing they can do about it so they dont worry but it still irks me.

Tremors Between Slip Events: More Evidence of Great Quake Danger to Seattle (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/12/091215131332.htm)
For most of a decade, scientists have documented unfelt and slow-moving seismic events, called episodic tremor and slip, showing up in regular cycles under the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state and Vancouver Island in British Columbia. They last three weeks on average and release as much energy as a magnitude 6.5 earthquake.
Now scientists have discovered more small events, lasting one to 70 hours, which occur in somewhat regular patterns during the 15-month intervals between episodic tremor and slip events.
"There appear to be tremor swarms that repeat, both in terms of their duration and in where they are. We haven't seen enough yet to say whether they repeat in regular time intervals," said Kenneth Creager, a University of Washington professor of Earth and space sciences.
"This continues to paint the picture of the possibility that a megathrust earthquake can occur closer to the Puget Sound region than was thought just a few years ago," he said.
I'd imagine it would look something like this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz0WyD7oefQ)

Oarfish omen spells earthquake disaster for Japan (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/7365076/Oarfish-omen-spells-earthquake-disaster-for-Japan.html)
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01589/Oarfish_1589774c.jpg
This rash of tectonic movements around the Pacific "Rim of Fire" is heightening concern that Japan - the most earthquake-prone country in the world - is next in line for a major earthquake.
Those concerns have been stoked by the unexplained appearance of a fish that is known traditionally as the Messenger from the Sea God's Palace.
The giant oarfish can grow up to five metres in length and is usually to be found at depths of 1,000 metres and very rarely above 200 metres from the surface. Long and slender with a dorsal fin the length of its body, the oarfish resembles a snake.
In recent weeks, 10 specimens have been found either washed ashore or in fishing nets off Ishikawa Prefecture, half-a-dozen have been caught in nets off Toyama Prefecture and others have been reported in Kyoto, Shimane and Nagasaki prefectures, all on the northern coast.
According to traditional Japanese lore, the fish rise to the surface and beach themselves to warn of an impending earthquake - and there are scientific theories that bottom-dwelling fish may very well be susceptible to movements in seismic fault lines and act in uncharacteristic ways in advance of an earthquake - but experts here are placing more faith in their constant high-tech monitoring of the tectonic plates beneath the surface.

I think the implication is, the news scroll would be better suited by giving details about a mass catastrophe, rather than details about Charlie Sheen. If people are really that hard up to learn about Sheen, they can probably find a website or two, that can do the job.

We don't know exactly how catastrophic this is for Japan yet, but it's obviously going to be beyond huge. How would you feel if any of the news channels were scrolling updates about a celebrity, while people were watching the coverage of a certain tragedy on September 11, 2001? It's just in bad taste at this point.

I see why you would consider it to be in bad taste (a point I happen to disagree with). But does other stories stop because another happens? They're running a scroll on the bottom which has information about Japan as well as reporting on it without commercial and running a bigger scroll on top.

The American economy has been on a freefall for decades. Bush and his policies helped it spiral out of control more, However Progressives have played a big role as well.

The Japanese government has announced that they are now operating under the assumption that two of the nuclear power plants damaged by the quake are now in meltdown.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters there is a "possibility" of a meltdown at the plant's No. 1 reactor, adding, "It is inside the reactor. We can't see." He then added that authorities are also "assuming the possibility of a meltdown" at the facility's No. 3 reactor.
A meltdown is a catastrophic failure of the reactor core, with a potential for widespread radiation release.
There's been no actual observation of elevated radiation levels around the plant as of yet, but this is getting pretty damn scary.

I'm pretty baffled by the anger towards Japan for needing help in this thread. This is a quote from the article above:
Japan's government also has made a formal request for U.S.aid, including military support, and full planning for deployment is in effect, with the U.S. military in Japan taking the lead, according to Sgt. Maj. Stephen Valley with U.S. Forces Japan.
Japan is a great ally of ours, and they are asking for help with this at the moment. This isn't simply throwing money at a problem. This is a request for resources that will likely lessen human suffering. I have a lot more opinions on this and some idiotic things that have been said in this thread, but I'll keep them to myself.

It's not at all like a bomb, but it can lead to massive radiation leakage. It could also render the locations of the reactors absolutely useless for decades at the least. On the not as bad level, think Three Mile Island. On the worst side, think Chernobyl.

It all depends on if the containment structure around the core is OK. Even if the core completely melts down, all that material should be trapped inside there. You just seal the reactor up forever and move on.
So what happens if the containment structure is damaged? Go to Chernobyl to see.

Again, I'm sorry, but I'm really ignorant about this. I actually didn't know much ab out Chernobyl until I just started researching it now. So, there would be a massive radiation leak, and the areas around the reactors would be uninhabitable? It seems the radiation would then travel. Is it conceivable that they'd have to, say, evacuate Tokyo? I read that 400,000 people had to be relocated after Chernobyl, which doesn't seem like a HUGE number (compared to the 10's of millions that would be evacuated in Japan). Is that because there was simply more land in Europe/Soviet Union?
PapaBear
03-12-2011, 07:47 PM
If it was like Chernobyl, it would be devastating. The radiation there did travel over great distances. If I remember correctly, it even fucked with Scandinavia. The reason it would be worse, is because the area where Chernobyl was, was far more desolate. If it happened in Japan on that level, it would be happening in a very densely populated country. The good news is, the reason Chernobyl was so bad, is because their reactor and safety practices were pathetic.

This will probably end up far more like Three Mile Island than Chernobyl -- perhaps some radioactive material gets out, but not enough to make the area permanently uninhabitable like Chernobyl.
It also depends on what kind of radioactive element leaks out. So far only Cesium has leaked which is actually not that bad. It has a half life of only 30 years. The material that leaked out of Chernobyl had a far longer half life leaving that area uninhabitable for hundreds of years.
As long as the containment structures hold around the reactors everything should be fine. If one starts letting radioactive material out, and I'm most worried about the one that exploded this morning, then there's a problem and the area around the plant will be uninhabitable for quite a while.
The reason Chernobyl was so bad was that on top of being a shitty reactor design and maintained horribly it had no containment structure. Once the reactor melted down the radioactive material went straight into the environment. They had to build one quickly after the fact. If these reactors melt down things will still be OK as long as the containment structures hold.

Also need help with temporary shelters since the temperature is in the 30's at night and many people are forced to sleep outside. So I think they need more help than most people might think.

The Japanese import a lot of food raw materials etc. At least the part of Japan I was in. During my time in the Marine Corps I was deployed to Okinawa twice which is part of the Ryukyu Island chain which is separated from the Main Island I think its called Honshu.
The people in Okinawa are somewhat of a proud people and are reluctant for aid. The people on the mainland might have a different viewpoint as I was never to the main Island.
In any case I did donate to relief efforts as my sister in law is from Japan and seeing the video footage plus the danger of the nuclear reactors puts them in a more dire situation
Another 10 ft tsunami is gonna hit Northern Japan any moment now.
And the second reactor exploded. Another great day for Japan.

Its a combination of ignorance and just people being complete douches.
Being with a deployable infantry battalion, Ive been to many places in the WestPac
The mentioning of sweatshops for example. A lot of people tend to classify all people from the far east as chinese because of the features of the eyes IE The ching chong ting tang stereotype that they talk like that.
Being to many different countries in that region, the features of people from each country are different especially the facial features. I can tell the difference btwn someone from China and Japan.
The Phillipines for example people are darker and the same goes for people in Indochina IE Thailand Vietnam etc, they have darker skin and usually are more petite than the Chinese Japanese and Koreans.
Im dating someone from the Philippines now and she always tells me that a lot of people are surprised that she doesnt have a traditional Asian name (whatever that means,) because her last name happens to be of spanish descent.
That region unfortunately is in a very active area for earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis etc but they always make it thru and their relative calmness and sense of order in an otherwise unfortunate tragedy is to be commended.

"Cappie Pondexter's words show the endurance of long-held bigoted and prejudiced attitudes toward the Japanese, even from young Americans in today's society whose only knowledge of the Second World War comes from history books and popular culture," Anti-Defamation League national director Abraham H. Gilbert Gottfried fired as AFLAC Duck (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/14/gilbert-gottfried-fired-aflac_n_835692.html)
"Gilbert's recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac," the company, which does 75% of its business in Japan, said in a statement. "There is no place for anything but compassion and concern during these difficult times."
Wonder if Gilbert thinks it was worth it cause, there ain't a winner in the bunch.

So pathetic.
At least most of the global warning crowd are just misinformed or reaching, the others (Pearl Harbor crowd) are completely ignorant and pathetic to say the least. However, I have read articles that often mention there are some theories out there on enhanced/accelerated plate tectonics that can be influenced by factors involving the climate changing crowd's arguments. They usually show a combination of the driving forces that are behind most plate movement. Usually the forces are broken down into three categories: mantle dynamics related, gravity related and Earth rotation related. So as much as Snoogans and others want to cry foul, it's not beyond the scope of theory at least.

Japan is facing the world's biggest nuclear crisis for decades as engineers struggle to regain control of the Fukushima plant following another explosion and a fire that caused a spike in radiation to harmful levels.
Amid growing fears that the situation is heading for catastrophe, 70 technicians are still battling to cool reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi facility but non-essential personnel have been ordered to leave and the Kyodo news agency reported that radiation levels have become too high for staff to remain in control rooms. The government has already called in international help in tackling the spiralling crisis.

Now im sure its not feasible just because im sure we dont have THAT much of it, but what would happen if they decided to stop tryin to use sea water to cool it down and just pumped in liquid nitrogen?
Im gonna guess, without really having any clue, that somehow liquid nitrogen mixing with the hydrogen or radioactive shit would probably cause some kind of massive reaction that would be a problem. Otherwise, lets get on this shit and pump some damn nitrogen on that bitch

That is creepy. Can't be a good sign.
Yeah, it's like there was some giant ecological disaster that wiped out all the sources of food or something.
As for cooling the reactors, they're just pumping water through. Probably even saltwater, given the emergency. Nitrogen is bad for cooling, if they were going the gas cooling route they'd use hydrogen. However, that'd end up being more of a hassle since they already have the setup for liquid cooling.
The whole reactor situation is much ado about nothing. It's a shit situation, those reactors will likely be condemned and there's a definite chance that some of the workers in the plants will suffer from some form of radiation poisoning but there isn't going to be an accident.
If you're worried that much about radiation, just make sure you don't walk in a building with granite, don't live downwind of a coal powerplant and most definitely don't fly in any airplanes.
