so my boss came into the office last week and basically told me he wanted to move me furthur up the ladder but i need to go back to school first.

i have a college degree but i'm in the constuction business now (office not field) and have no background in construction. i know it will be worth it in the end but i already work 50 hours and throw in a class or 2 in evenings and my life will kinda suck during the week.

so anyone else go back to school and how did it work out?

oh...and everything is completly paid for by company.

I'm currently in school, it's not so bad since work lets me change my schedule around so I can leave early for my classes and they cover 80% of the cost, so it's not so bad. Free time during the week sucks, but that just means less TV. But with less drinking I'm losing weight. It's been pretty good so far.

I'm going to be taking a class this fall and exploring where I want to go with further schooling. Everything's paid for also... which to me seems like a no brainer but being married with a small child now has made this a friggin nightmare... on the other hand if I don't bump up my career I'll go insane.

It's already yak yak yak about spending more time with the family.

Go for it especially if the company is paying for it

I take courses every now and again, but only based on my own interests, and not really on any specific pursuit, so I can't really speak to that. It's alot of fun although I inevitably end up feeling like the old man among the young pups.

For my certifications I found a place up in Waltham Mass. (which was the sticks but strangely relaxing). I was there for 2 weeks, my company paid for food, gas, tolls, and booze. At the end I got my MCSE. My chick took a flight up and we spent a long weekend in Boston.

Definitely do it especially that it's on their dime.

I went back to school at age 28, decided to change careers and became an architect. luckily, drexel university here in philly has a night school architecture program.
even with my previous college degree, it took 7 years. and since drexel is on a quarter system instead of a semester system, all of the classes were accelerated. I took at least 2 if not 3 classes every term. in the mean time, life happened. my older daughter was born the night before a final presentation (which they let me reschedule.)
so what I always tell people is that it is both the hardest and the easiest thing I ever did. the work was difficult, took all of my mental resources to do, etc. but it was the easiest thing because I knew it was what I needed to do to accomplish the goal. I just wish I had done it sooner.
And I didn't even have any employers pay for any of it. I took loans out the ass. will be paying those for a long time.
so if it's what you want to do, and more school is the only way to accomplish your goal, I highly recommend it, especially if you have a sugar daddy paying for it.

Evening classes are a blast...better than "So you think you can [fucking] dance?"

I just finished a graduate degree that way.

You are way better off in the long run ... and if they are paying ... go and get your MBA. No joke ... let them pay ... and then get paid.

It sounds like a great opportunity for you... it might be a little hellish for a few months, but what is a few months when it means more money and a better career? I would be flattered as hell that your boss wants you to move up and is willing to pay for your education.

More education means more possibilities outside this job as well... once you get more education and a better position, you might be able to leverage that for a better job somewhere else someday.

Good luck!

Definitely do it. I went back and got a grad degree and am going to start a second Masters in September. Whether or not you enjoy the class, at least you will get a nice bump in pay.

I am currently going for my MBA. it is tough with a wife a kid and work, but it is worth it in the end. I was never a big school guy, but work is paying for it, so why not take the opportunity

Is there any way you can maybe take an online class(es)? Maybe that would ease you into school mode again since it will be at your own time and then the following semester you can take a regular class.

i checked that out but they dont offer...oddly i hate online classes becuase everyone i had was a "do your work at your own pace and turn everything in at the end of the semester...which meant i would do nothing until the last week and have a whole semster work to do in a couple days

oh...and thanks for everyones advice

Definitely the right attitude to take. Plus, it going to help you in pursuing other work options when you get out.
