Into thin air: Did Steve Fossett fake his own death? (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/into-thin-air-did-steve-fossett-fake-his-own-death-882540.html)
Fascinating story.
On Sunday, Lt-Col Cynthia Ryan of the US Civil Air Patrol, official spokeswoman for the search-and-rescue operation, was quoted as saying that she believes Fossett may not have actually crashed. Her astonishing theory is that this all-American hero had somehow faked his own death.
Ryan's claim is supported by Robert Davis, a life insurance loss adjuster who spent several months compiling a report into the Fossett affair. Both experts believe that several elements of the incident simply do not add up – and their theory is now being supported by an array of aviation experts, private detectives and good, old-fashioned conspiracy theorists.
Yet the rumours of wrongdoing are not limited to the media. Military people are not prone to hyperbole, and Lt-Col Ryan's comments about the Fossett case (in an interview with the News of the World last weekend) were far from understated.
"Anything is possible," she said. "There are a lot of raised eyebrows; even more so now. I know very few people here, friends in law enforcement, that buy this story like the rest of the world has. I've been doing search and rescue for 14 years. Fossett should have been found. It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

CooCoo for Coco Puffs.
The Civil Air Patrol isn't the military, unless this LtCol was the air force liaison to the CAP.

It'd be great if just ONE of these stories were true. I'd love it if someone actually faked their death and got away with it.

I not familiar with the story, so what would be the point of him faking his own death?

To give Coast to Coast AM a topic to speculate about.

Authorities have found the plane Steve Fossett was flying when he disappeared last year, but they have not found the millionaire adventurer's body, the Madera County, California, sheriff said Thursday. (http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/02/steve.fossett.search/index.html)
The plane apparently crashed head-on into the side of a mountain, and the damage was "so severe I doubt someone would've walked away from it," the sheriff said.
Anderson said local authorities would search for Fossett's remains, and the National Transportation Safety Board would try to determine why and how the crash occurred.
I think he's in the Pine Barrens with that Russian that Paulie Walnuts tried to whack.

Search crews and cadaver dogs scoured the steep terrain around the crash site in hopes of finding at least some trace of his body and solving the mystery of his disappearance once and for all. A sheriff's investigator found the 2-inch-long piece of bone.
The remains are enough for a coroner to perform DNA testing, NTSB acting Chairman Mark Rosenker said.

those bones were placed there by heretical mad scientists as a conspiracy to fool the world into thinking the world was over 6,000 years old.
But seriously, its a shame this isnt a fake-your-own death situation....i agree with the guy above, wishing that at least one of these stories were true.

MSN said today that in these cases, if the body isn't found in the first two days, then animals get in and scavenge. The boy's been eated.

They should start checking his credit card statements for fraudulent charges. What do coyotes shop for?

Yeah, i've been thinking about makin a concerted effort to really dumb myself down just to see how things shake out.......
...but then i get distracted by the rising bubbles in my fish tank......and that seems to do the job nicely.
