I think everyone rejecting HG broke him and what little he's done since has been shit.

I'm curious to see the original 4-hour cut of HG. The released version is nowhere near as bad as people want it to be and actually is pretty great at times, and those who have seen the original cut have almost always raved about it.

It's funny...most of the huge flops aren't nearly as bad as people claim they are. Waterworld is pretty silly, but it's a perfectly watchable, quality action film, and the giant set pieces ad action scenes are a welcome chage in the face of CGI taking over everything. Ishtar? Not bad at all. I think it's pretty damn funny.

I watched again recently and I thought it was still a tremendous film.

However, I forgot that the first hour or so (the wedding/going away party) moved so incredibly slow. Obviously, it let us get to know the characters and developed a back story before putting them in the horrific war situations.

Anyway, any movie with John Cazale is worth watching (he only made five or so).

I remember hearing that they shot the scenes with him first because he was dying of Cancer. He died before the film's release.

The Deer Hunter is in my top five all-time faves.....
Saw Heaven's Gate on that infamous first day of release....and found it pretty fucking awesome though clearly self-indulgent.....a must to be seen on a big screen with first rate sound.

Heaven's Gate isn't THAT bad. Not nearly as wretched as its infamous reputation suggests. After his DH triumph Cimino just surrounded himself with too many obsequious yes men who didn't have the balls to rein him in for his follow-up. The film is ambitious to a fault.

Walken alone makes this movie something special.

Especially once you realize he had the Coolidge family watch up his ass the whole time.

To me, the long, lazy, pre-war act of The Deerhunter makes the movie. It's beautiful.

NO WAY! The Deer Hunter is directed by Michael Camino and it is a classic. Sure it takes a little while to get going, but then again don't most good stories.

No Country For Old Men is overrated as for Coen Brothers movies I think The Big Lebowski and Fargo blow No Country for Old Men out of the water. And Full Metal Jacket is pretty good but no Deer Hunter, and Platoon was only a couple of cool scenes and the rest seemed like a typical boring war movie.

If you are going to compare Deer Hunter to something I'd hold it up to Apocalypse Now (which is the best damn war movie ever).

So you are going to justify a movie with a 5-minute scene in which a man rollerskates while playing the fiddle in the 1890's?

I can understand that it is not as brilliant as Deer Hunter and it has a grand feeling of self-indulgence but.....
The ballroom dance sequence on the big screen is one of the most hypnotic and magnificent of all time and one of many scenes of opulent brillance.

Not to mention the fact that contrary to popular belief, the friggin movie MADE money. Even those that hate the movie should cop to that fact.
