View Full Version : Stung by a Hornet

Friday Evening I was mowing my lawn; I went by an old tree stump and a few seconds later I had a sharp burning feeling by my left knee. My hand came down and I caught the little fella who was causing my discomfort and I squeezed him until he was mush. When I looked back I saw the swarm of Hornets flying around the tree stump, so I backed away with my knee feeling like it was on fire. After they calmed down I continued to mow the lawn; the pain in my knee started to go away, but I started to feel very hot and I began to itch all over. Soon the itching became unbearable (so bad I ripped my shirt off and began scratching my entire body) and now I had severe pain in the area where I was stung.
I ran into my bathroom, looked into the mirror and I was bright red and my face swollen, my lips so bad I thought they were going to burst. Luckily I had some Benadryl, so I took a few of those and I jumped into the shower and sprayed cold water on myself and scratch all over. It felt like I had dead skin over my body, even the soles of my feet were in pain. After about 10 minutes the itching and the burning began to fade as I sat there in my shower with the cold water spraying on me. Before I went to bed that night I took a few more Benadryl to help me sleep.
The next two days the only problem I had was swelling around my knee where I got strung. I could hardly stand for more than 15 minutes before it felt like the circulation in my leg was getting cut off. Today the swelling is down and I no long have any pain when I’m standing, but I went to the doctor anyway to have it checked out. They prescribed an EpiPen incase I get stung again.
Last year I was stung 3 or 4 times with no problem, except the initial pain of the sting, now I’m told if I get stung again I need to inject myself or I might develop problems breathing. I’m 6 feet tall 185lbs, it boggles my mind a tiny Hornet can cause me such problems.
Has anyone else ever experienced a similar problem?

I guess you weren't worried about anaphylactic shock. Next time you get stung, be careful.

As I look back on it, I was not thinking very clearly. I should of gone to the Hospital or something.

My brother had hives after getting stung by a bee. His doctor gave him a script for an epipen. It is a good thing to have around the house just in case... an allergic reaction the first time is the warning sign...

I am not generally allergic to bee or wasp stings, but it also seems like the stings have somehow become more potent in recent years. I have been stung a couple of times and had a hell of a reaction whereas I normally would just be annoyed.
I have been able to get away with Benadryl, but my reactions haven't been nearly as bad as yours Foster. I think you got lucky. Keep that epi-pen close by from now on.

I was stung on the ass once by a wasp while I was in the shower... even through the pain I could see the humor in the situation.
*edit* ... And NO, the "wasp" wasn't "my dad"

For allergic reactions, go with your tried and true Bayer aspirin and plenty of water.
For the itching, down at the WalMart they got this neato spray dillio that looks kinda like a magic marker - it even has a clip so you can carry it around in your pocket.
It contains a 6% solution of Benzocain.
There's not a lot in it, but it's only two bucks.
I live in the country and get stung a few times a year and also get the poison ivy a time or two...
Anyone wanna talk about ticks?

I am a pest control technician and I get stung a few times a year. The reaction is more severe every time, like a 3 hour adrenaline rush. Hornets pack the biggest punch and should not be taken lightly. Pack the EpiPen.

I'll be headed to the Pharmacy in a little while to pick it up.
Once I get back there is going to be some Hornet killin' going on!

I Googled Hornets and other known stinging insects and it definitly looked like a Hornet.
Once I kill them all can I send a few corpses to you for a positive ID?

got stung last year. had my shirt off pushing a wheel barrow and it caught me on the shoulder blade. i turned and saw exactly where he flew into the bush. after 10 minutes of some nice throbbing pain it pretty much subsided. have to say it was not so fortunate for that hornet and his family. unloaded the whole fucking can on e'm... hasta la vista baby -LOL

Can recommend anything to kill them with, I was thinking either a machete or shotgun?

Are you suggesting that we raise a generation of super bees?

GO to a Home Depot and ask for flying insect spray. Hornets are tough to kill but if you can find the nest, a good aerosol should do the trick. Is ass sweat one word or two?

I was thinking much the same thing. Although it may piss some of them off, most are sure to be in incinerated. :)

You should be lucky. I have these MOTHER FUCKERS in my yard. I have killed about 10 of them and been through 6 or more cans of hornet sprays. I am deathly afraid to be stung by this since it is not on the Schmidt Index. I would cry.

I frequently pick up bees to show my friends that they are not usually agressive. This is not always treu, I have been stung by swarms after I accidentlly knocked down the hive. Bees are really our friends, just leave them alone.

Question...
Bees help us by pollinating our plants and making honey... what exactly do wasps and hornets do?

I ended my association with the Hornets in my yard today; first with a can of Wasp and Hornet Killer and just for assurance I poured gasoline all over the stump and threw a match.
Bye Bye Hornets....and eyebrows.
