Neat, I bet it's just for a day or two knowing how corrupt justice in this area can be; but it's a start imho. Jersey has nothing on us in the corruption dept. Every aspect of local government is corrupt, and it is no longer a shock to read that some dept. head is under federal investigation. The annomaly here the politician/civil servant who doesn't have a record.

Just happened; so there isn't much on this on the wire yet; but here's what I found:

Judge sends Detroit mayor to jail
Buzz up!Like this story? Share it with Yahoo! Buzz
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sent to jail this morning after a judge determined that he had violated the terms of his release, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Kilpatrick, a Democrat, is facing a range of charges, including perjury. The paper, a fellow Gannett publication, says the mayor traveled to Canada without notifying the court, as required under the terms of his bond.

Update at 10:46 a.m. ET: "The first day you were before me, I thought I made it clear to you that this court comes first in everything," Judge Ronald Giles says, according to the paper. "I do understand that you're under...pressure...but I have to look at how the system should be run and perceived by the public."

Kilpatrick will stay in jail unless another judge overturns the order or the mayor comes up with $75,000, the paper says.

This guy has been on the fringes of trouble forever it seems, and he is dragging down any hope of regional progress with his ongoing legal crap coupled with his insistance not to resign. It is even alleged that he is involved in a murder of a prostitute. He definately did commit perjury in a whistle blower trial that he instigated to cover up his own shenanighans, and he also shoved a deputy about two weeks ago while using the race card to denigrate the officers partner.

The city is overwhelmingly Black, and so it is probably no surprise that so far at least half the voting public thinks he is good enough to vote for again; his Mom won a US House primary Tuesday by the slimmest of margins, and the only reason her margin was close is that her district covers some areas outside Detroit proper. His Father is under investigation for bribes.

Our last three police Chiefs retired to Federal Prison. His current Police Chief looks to follow her peers as she is also tangled up in the legal process he ensnared himself in. I'm afraid this area is going to get much worse before any real change happens; if ever. We have the lowest High School grad rate in the country. Half the city residents have no vehicle, and three quarters live below the poverty level. They must be so ignorant that they cling to a Kwame Kilpatrick in the false hope that youth beats experience every time.

Our Free Press celebrated the fact that only one SuperBowl attendee was murdered when we held that fest two years ago; I imagine that is one more than the norm; but around here it is cause for a pat on the back and 2" headlines congratulating the thugs for acting mostly civil.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts this guy is out of the clink within the week; not one public official around here possess a backbone.

Jersey has nothing on us in the corruption dept.

I've grew up in the Detroit area, I now live in NJ and I must say...QFMFT

Sharpton/Jackson won't even touch this one. Guarantee it. That's how bad things are.

I thought things were horrible under Mayor Young. Archer was slightly better. What I've heard about this guy makes me thankful that I am no longer in the area.

Ehhh...those guys even have to know (at least I would think) to pick and choose their battles.

Kilpatrick is a mess. My guess is you'll hear stunning silence from them on this on, because they know he's inevitably going down.

Even Obama made sure he was never in the same venue as the Mayor when he came to town a few times. He, (Obama), was supposed to speak at that NAACP event where Rev. Wright primed his NPC speech, ( the day afterwards he gave that speech in Washington DC); but Obama canceled NCAAP to avoid a photo op with Kwame is the local newspeak on that.

The Bitch is that the world thinks this area is all like Detroit, and nothing could be further from the truth. I remember Vos opening last years Virus Tour with a quip about how many White people were in the audience, (@95% White), and how he thought Detroit would be a Black crowd. Then he made a great joke: "Welcome to the meeting."

I live in the 17th richest per capita income community in America, and Detroit proper is maybe 12 miles down the road from this suburb; I can't remember the last murder here, and other violent crimes are rare around these parts. Many subburbs of Detroit are much the same if not quite as wealthy. We get a bad rap from the thugs in Detroit, and the destitution that is the inner city; there is no hope for this area until we somehow get those kids in Detroit educated. Did I mention that the FBI is also investigating the school board?

You want Shock and Awe? Grow up in Detroit and go to Chicago for a weekend of baseball games; it will take everything you've got to come home. Once people from around here see a real working city they stop making excuses, and rarely display any sort of local pride. It is a devastating experience for the uininitiated. Detroit is literally miles upon miles of ghetto wasteland with a few sorta okay 'hoods intersperesed. I've been to Bed Sty, and Watts, and a whole lot of other American enclaves; I have yet to see anything that comes close to the widespread destruction that is Detroit. East Saint Loius was a picnic compared to this place. I could go on and on; but I already did.

either it is a bad time to be mayor, or the mayors have lost their damn minds.

BERWYN HEIGHTS, Md. - Mayor Cheye Calvo got home from work, saw a package addressed to his wife on the front porch and brought it inside, putting it on a table. Suddenly, police with guns drawn kicked in the door and stormed in, shooting to death the couple's two dogs and seizing the unopened package.

In it were 32 pounds of marijuana. But the drugs evidently didn't belong to the couple.

Just more proof of my thesis that whenever a group of more than three cops get together they revert to juvenile delinquents, and the public safety is the last thing on their minds. Where did the bullets go after exiting the dogs? Were they sure no children were playing in the back yard or a neighbors? Of course not.

The crap about feeling threatened is one of those cop lies that sound plausible but one knows what really happened. If they shot a man in the back running away in this case they could not possibly get away with saying they felt threatened; but a dog is not in the same league as humans; so they get away with the preposterous decision at the immediate supierior level. The only reason some justice may come out of this is that it was the Mayors residence, and the neighbors are supportive.

I realize we need police, and I respect the job they do most of the time; but after having been a victum of their childish crap I will never seek their assistance for anything, and I most certainly would never help them. Notice what the Mayors wifes friend told her, (If they did this to you how can I trust them anymore?): my neighbors to a man are still very leary of the police now. It is well known that Narco squads are often out of control, according a couple cops I've talked with. Okay - you know you're rotten. Do any of you 'beat cops' have the balls to uphold your oath of office and turn them in?

Back to Kwame: word is he will be sprung this morning some time. There is no justice.

That makes about as much sense as the crap about Black being a dirty word because we peg the idiot the Black sheep.

In my lifetime Negroes have opted to be called first Negroes, then Coloreds, then African Americans, and now Black. If they don't like it maybe they shouldn't fuck with it, and just be proud of who they are.

I call a Black a Negro, and he says I'm a racist; unless I'm writing a check to his college fund. I call a Black colored, and he calls me racist; unless I send a check to his NAACP. I call a Black an African American and the Son of Bitch reminds me he is really an African Canadian. Imus was right - there's no winning with you people.

Kwame assaulted a sherrif deputy two weeks ago, and used racist languange to his partner in the process, and he was not arrested. Today they may charge him with that crime. He broke his bond at least 5 times before the Judge jailed him; should he just be allowed to act the fool with no consequences whatsoever? He has already cost at least three long time cops their careers in Detroit, and a settlement of $8.5 million, (plus interest); that translates to 196 new firefighters, or 168 new cops. Did I mention the budget is in turmoil here, and hundreds of city workers, (mostly Blacks), will lose their jobs because of Kwame's incompetence?

He's a victum all right; a victum of his own ego, and the coddleing of those who promote his thugs on something they openly call the "Black Slate". But worse - the people who needed his leadership the most are the ones that will suffer the most because of his actions.

It does not affect my neighborhood immediately at all. We're playing the PGA Championship in my back yard today. But the cancer that is Detroit is dragging the entire State down, and the only fix is to educate those inner city kids. There is little hope for those already in that school system, less than 25% of all freshmen in any Detroit High School will graduate - the rest will be cellmates of Kwame and his crew.

New Charges Today, and an escape plan for the Mayor from jail with a tether:

Kilpatrick charged with new felonies moments after jail order is lifted
Attorney General Cox says mayor assaulted, obstructed two officers
By Jim Schaefer and Ben Schmitt • Free Press Staff Writers • August 8, 2008

After spending a night in the Wayne County Jail on an unrelated criminal case, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was charged with two counts of felonious assault today for allegedly shoving a sheriff’s deputy into his partner last month.

"We are charging defendant Kwame Kilpatrick with assaulting ... police officers in the furtherance of their duties," Cox announced in a news conference this morning.

The latest charges pose yet another threat to the livelihood of the 38-year-old mayor, who has steadfastly remained in office while battling eight other felony charges and possible removal hearings by the City Council and Gov. Jennifer Granholm. The other criminal charges all relate to the text message scandal exposed in the Free Press in January.

The charges against Kilpatrick each carry a penalty of up to two years in prison upon conviction. If he is convicted of a felony, he would automatically be removed from office.

"This is a very straightforward, simple case" that prosecutors hope to bring to a preliminary hearing within two weeks, Cox said.

"It is a very serious case. ... I cannot recall, ever, seeing, let alone hearing, of a situation where a police officer trying to serve a subpoena was assaulted," Cox said, adding that he has been a prosecutor for 20 years.

The new charge stems from a July 24 altercation with Wayne County Sheriff’s Detective Brian White, who testified that Kilpatrick shoved him into his partner at the mayor’s sister’s house in Detroit. Kilpatrick’s lawyers said the mayor gently escorted White away from the house.

White said he was trying to serve the mayor’s friend, Bobby Ferguson, with a subpoena for a hearing in the text message case against Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty, who also is facing multiple felonies in that case.

White testified in a bond hearing the day after the altercation that he saw a truck from Ferguson’s contracting company in front of the house on LaSalle Boulevard on the city’s west side. He and JoAnn Kinney, a former Detroit police officer who now works as an investigator in the prosecutor’s office, approached the house to ask whether Ferguson was there.

Kinney testified that Kilpatrick burst through the door, hurled expletives at her and White, then shoved White into her. Kinney, who is black, also said that the mayor made a racial remark to her about White, who is white.

It was never explained why the mayor was at his sister’s house during the altercation, which happened about 4 p.m. on a weekday. The home is next door to the home of his mother, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.

Cox announced the following day that his office would review the case after state police concluded their investigation.

Judge orders tether, no travel, $50,000 bond for Kilpatrick to be freed
By M.L. ELRICK • Free Press Staff Writer • August 8, 2008

Updated at 11:35 a.m.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Thomas Jackson ruled this morning that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick must post 10% of a $50,000 bond and wear a tether before he can be released from the Wayne County Jail. He also is forbidden to travel, meaning the mayor must cancel his trip to the Democratic National Convention and a family trip to Florida.

Outside the courthouse, James Thomas, Kilpatrick’s lawyer, said they were “very grateful,” for the bond hearing today.

“The mayor is pleased to be released,” Thomas added.

Kilpatrick attorney Jim Parkman spoke of Kilpatrick’s night in jail, “It was probably pretty restful, being away from all the phone calls and everything.”

He said the mayor was upbeat and positive. “I am sure he is very grateful we got him out.” As to reports for any plea negotiation, Parkman said, “I know nothing about any plea.”

Jackson said earlier this morning that a lower court judge did not abuse his discretion in sending Kilpatrick to jail.

Jackson's decision came moments after prosecutors arguing to keep Kilpatrick behind bars for violating his bond told Jackson that Kilpatrick brazenly ignored restrictions on his travel, despite being given great leeway and warnings not to leave town without calling the court.

"He knows what the bond requirements are and yet he professes to take this case seriously," said Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Robert Moran. "It's about him not telling anyone and trying to get away with it."

Moran made his case moments after Kilpatrick attorney Jim Parkman argued that, short of a heinous crime like treason, a judge may not send someone to jail without setting bond.

"We believe that is nothing but a clear abuse of discretion," Parkman said, referring to District Judge Ronald Giles.

Kilpatrick, looking none the worse for wear after his night at the Wayne County Jail, watched impassively with his hand on his chin.

Parkman also argued that the mayor's trip to Windsor was for business and should be treated differently than that of the typical criminal defendant.

"My Johnny Six Pack would have been over at Caesar's, playin' cards, drinkin' liquor and chasin' women," he said, invoking Giles' "six-pack" quote Thursday. Parkman added that the mayor was in Windsor only for 45 minutes.

He said he didn't want special treatment for the mayor, but felt there were mitigating circumstances involved in the mayor's violation of bond terms that required him to notify the court before leaving town. Giles revoked Kilpatrick's bond and sent him to jail because the mayor did not clear the trip with him.

Jackson started the proceedings by announcing that he had received and ignored a call from a lawyer who works for the mayor and used to be a City Council member, underscoring his pledge to be objective as he considers Kilpatrick's bid to be set free.

Jackson did not identify Sharon McPhail, but she is the only lawyer working for the mayor who fits the description he gave.

"I assume they were not calling to wish me a happy day or a happy Friday morning," he said, explaining why he did not take the call.

Jackson made his remarks moments after supporters of Kilpatrick and at least two of his police bodyguards joined the crush of reporters and photographers filling his basement courtroom in the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, where felony criminal cases are tried in Wayne County.

A least one city employee watched the proceedings. DeDan Milton, a longtime friend and mayoral appointee, sat in the front row of the courtroom. His brother, Kandia, is acting as mayor while Kilpatrick is incarcerated.

On Thursday, Jackson scheduled a 9 a.m. hearing to determine whether the mayor, who spent the night in the Wayne County Jail after his bond was revoked, will go free today.

Kilpatrick entered the courtroom about 9:15 a.m., his presence answering one, relatively minor, question that has hung over the proceedings: He is wearing a tan suit with a blue shirt, not the jail scrubs he was issued Thursday.

When he was processed at the jail, the mayor was wearing a shiny gray suit with matching vest and a French-cuffed shirt with "Mayor" embroidered on the sleeves.
