I know they're cute because when I wash my car with one the whole neighborhood wants to stare and point..
When you dunk them into the bucket and they come out all covered in suds or the cute little sound they make when you're scrubing your rims, OMG I just wanna eat 'em up..Too cute!

Some believe that we are genetically wired for paternal/maternal attraction to anything remotely similar to a human baby. Infant mammals generally have a large head and proportionally large eyes, which could be a visual cue that triggers this protective emotion.

well my cat can do this cute thing where if he wants to get into the living room, he figured out how to open the (sliding) door himself. Or if the dogs crowd around his little kitty door, he'll try to fuck with them by banging on the door until they leave.

Babies are cute too, and look what they become.
It's the ears.
They shape the entire kitty face, and make it Aaaaaaaaaaa-DORABLE!
That's the major factor in kitten cuteness.

Out by our chicken coop this stray female cat decided to settle down and make a nest for itself. This was like a year and a half ago. Its been living there ever since and must have met up with a male because she had kittens and they are almost full grown now. We call her Chineeta and she has slowly started getting comfortable with people and now you can not oly touch her, but you can pet her and I brushed her yesterday. We started feeding her and I started buying cat food just for them. I worry that they have never been vaccinated or received any medical scrutiny not have they been fixed. I am sure sooner or later there will be a population problem. Is there any kind of stuff you could put in their food to vaccinate them and also make them sterile? She small for a cat and strangely colored, buy shes pretty too. The kittens are more stand offish and wont come near us.

I recently had a strange cat stroll into my living room.
There is a tear in the screen door and he just invited himself in.
My cat went wild. I first heard him hissing and growling and it was dark, I just saw the cat and thought it was mine as he has the same white feet and tummy as Charlie (but he is completely grey while Charlie is tabby)
Yesterday he was back. The door was shut but Charlie still went crazy, so I knew he was back. They sniffed each other through the glass door and I opened them.
He seems comfy here, yet CHarlie is not having it. No buddays for my kitty, he is a bit selfish and rather not share his space.

If you don't get them fixed, you'll have at least 3x as many next year, I speak from experience. There are vets all over LI that do low cost spay/neuter for feral cats, the one by me does it for $30/cat and that includes shots and flea treatments. They also notch the cats ear so if anyone tries to catch them, they'll know they are in a colony and being taken care of.
Here is a list of vets in LI that do the low cost spay/neuter.
http://animalallianceli.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37&Itemid=37
There are organizations that can loan you a trap if you need one, or they also sell them at home depot (hav a heart).
The kittens will warm up, but it takes a long time, and they won't like you like a normal cat would. I have 4 outside right now. I have 2 kittens that I've taken in from the feral colony and tamed (my dad has 1)

I am afraid that I will ruin her trust if I capture her or grab her while she is letting me pet her. I wish there was just something that I could put in their food. From your experience, if you capture them, will they hate you after that?

perhaps you can put some sort of sedative in the food so you can capture her and have it done. The vet may have something like that.
(She may not remember it was you who captured and had her fixed)

She'll get over it. Just try to make the experience as untraumatizing as possible and give her some milk or good scraps afterward to make it up to her.
I've captured several wild cats and they never seemed to hold a grudge.

nah, they'll definitely hate you while they're in the cage, but you throw a blanket over it and they calm down. After they're fixed, you re-release them and they forget about it really fast. The ones I fixed got friendlier afterwards, actually.

This thread made me really miss cats (I've lost 3 this summer and no one wants to even think about getting more for awhile) so I went to the old animal shelter where I used to volunteer. They turned me away cuz it's been years since I've been there, oh well. Kinda made me feel shitty cuz I wanted to see some cats. Soothing lil' shits they are.
Driving back in chagrin, I see a chipmunk rolling over and over in the middle of the road. It's a road leading to a dead-end culdesac, so it's not a busy street, and I have no trouble pulling over and walking up to the thing.
Lil' fella winged his front paw and also had a bloody nose. I guess something knocked him out cuz he was dazed and couldn't get up. I gingerly pet the thing to see how it'd react, it didn't whip around and try to bite me like I feared it would... so I cautiously lifted it up with three fingers and carried him off the road into a patch of grass. He still wasn't able to move around but he sat up and kept making some sniffing noise... I head back to shelter to wash my hands and see if they have a shoebox for him, they don't. I figure nature will do its thing and he'll be dead or eaten by the time I get back to him. Come back to the rock I left him at and he's gone- then this thing hops up to me from behind some trees and it was the lil' fella with the winged hand. Seemed like he was doing alright.
So yeah, even when I'm not seeing any cats themselves, they can make a guy feel good in an indirect way.
i love kitties oversized heads and paws and how everything is exciting. claude still finds everything exciting , but in a bored way. i fear hes becoming a hipster. *shudder*

I remember reading a study that suggested that the reason that people, especially women, are attracted to kittens is because proportionally, a kitten's face is very similar to a baby's face. Large eyes, small nose and mouth, and the spacing of these features are very close. Also, a kitten's meow is very similar to a baby's cry. Don't know how scientific this "study" was, but it made sense to me.

The internet has proven to me beyond a reasonable doubt that we are out of things to do.

sr - please catch her and get her spayed if you can! Missy posted a good link. It will be the best for her and her kittens in the long run, and she will definitely forget about it super quickly. Plus, you'll feel great that you did it!
And here's my guys. Martin Buber (the black one) came from a feral colony in Queens; they've been trying to trap and spay his mom for years but he's too wiley. Jimmy Bean, the tabby, came from a barn out here in Ithaca. The owners of the farm have trapped/fixed over 30 cats in the past year.

Gothic kittens!
They're so melancholy but still so cute.
