Well, it is short for cabriolet, from a French origin. It is defined as a carriage for hire.

Actually, I believe that "cabriolet" is French for "If you can look like a man driving this gay piece of crap convertible, you must be Fabio." I took a few liberties with the intransitive tense, but that's the idea.

I was going to say cabriolet
too except that I was under
the impresisn that a
cabriolet was simply any
two wheeled horse drawn
carriage, not necessarily for
hire.

Webster's Dictionary has several definition but as far as the etiology of the word, it most likely came from "cabriolet" as TAZZ suggested. However, TOO CUTE is completely correct that cabriolet is defined as
"a light 2-wheeled one-horse carriage with a folding leather hood, a large apron, and upward-curving shafts."
Here's some interesting info I found while looking at the word "taxi."
Main Entry: taxi dancer
Function: noun
Date: circa 1927
A girl employed by a dance hall, caf‚, or cabaret to dance with patrons who pay a certain amount for each dance
