Nasal foreign body: Eggs and Cheese

Yesterday for the second time, I got food stuck in my nasal passage.

I was eating a fresh mozz and roasted red pepper omelette and laughed or something while I was chewing and got cheese and egg in my nasal passage.

Swallowing wouldn't get it out. Blowing my nose hard made it move around but not dislodge. I suffered w/ it all day and this morning it was gone.

How do you get it out if that happens and are there any long term consequences to egg and cheese in your sinuses?

I've heard of a "ham 'n' egger" before, but a "cheese 'n' egger?"

The problem is that the entryway to the nose through the backside (in the "pharynx", or posterior throat) is pretty big, but the nose itself is pretty small, passage-wise. So, like a funnel, it's easy to cram eggs and cheese and roasted peppers into the big part in the posterior pharynx, but not so easy to keep it going in the same direction by blowing to make it come out the front of the nose.


The best way to get crap out of the nose that's come in through the pharynx is to push it back out into the pharynx itself, the way it came in. And the best way to do that is with a saline irrigator:

You can find a "Neti Pot" at any drug store. There's also something called "Simply Saline" that is an aerosol nasal irrigator that might help.

Don't try to push it back with a pencil or anything...if you get eggs and cheese forced into the actual sinus (there's a little hole between the "turbinate bones" in the nose) god help you.

Ultimately, though, prevention is the key...STOP LAUGHING WHEN YOU'RE EATING! Leave your sense of humor at the door and eat quietly like everyone else. :smile:

weirdly, I have the same reaction every time I scroll past that insane picture of that girl irrigating her nose. It makes me laugh out loud. Things and stuff going in and out of the nose are somehow just funny.

Thank god you knew what I was talking about. The people I work with thought I was crazy.

I have simply saline at home, I'm going to put a bottle in my drawer at work now since I seem to be prone to this!

Neti-pots are cool! I use mine just to flush out regular junk all year long and to keep my sinuses moist in the winter.

that's nothing! i once saw a magician do that, but with a bunch of silk handkerchiefs!
