View Full Version : Why don't you have e-pass?

This is for all the people who live somewhere that they MAY be going through a toll at least one time in their life. If you're not going to be going through tolls then of course you wouldn't need one so don't even try getting snippy with me.
Yesterday I was on my way to work (I use the NJ Turnpike every day) and I was the only car using e-z pass. Every single cash lane was backed up probably a good 30 cars deep. I just drove on by and went on my merry way while those people probably sat there for 20 minutes in line.
It actually bothers me to see so many people still not have e-z pass. I don't understand why everyone doesn't have it. Sometimes the amount of people not using e-z pass does effect me so don't sit there and say it shouldn't bother me. If enough people are in the cash lanes coming off and going to the Goethals Bridge there is usually a backup and I get stuck in unnecessary traffic.
The first time I drove on the parkway I didn't have e-z pass, I had a retarded plastic cup with all this change in it in my cup holder. As soon as I got home that day I got myself an e-z pass. Why other people would rather sit and wait instead of driving on through is beyond me. I just want to understand you people. So please tell me why.

It's a couple of things.
1) People are technophobes.
2) People think they don't use the toll roads enough to justify having an EZ-pass.
3) People don't like having money held in check. Although it's only 25 bucks to have an EZ pass, they don't like having that money held up pre-paid.
4) People don't like having their movements tracked.

It's as if I wrote what you posted. I can't stand sitting in traffic at the Goethals, Outerbridge, GWB, or any of the tunnels only to find out that the cash lanes are causing all the trouble.:wallbash:
Two other things come to mind with this:
1) EZ Pass has been around for a few years... Why do people still use the EZ Pass lane only to realize that they don't have it, and have to fuck up my commute?
2) Why every morning as I'm getting on the Turnpike, some jackass headed for the Car/Truck lane has to slam on his brakes, put his left blinker on, and wait there until he can get over to merge onto the Cars Only ramp.. They both go to the same place you shit-stain! What do the loud trucks hurt your eardrums?... Fuckin' assholes.
And another thing, to that cocksucker granola fuck with the onion-head hat that shot me a dirty look this morning, your "My Fuel Addiction Funds Terrorism :(" isn't cute and inventive when you look like Richard Reed.....cocksucker.

now i can't afford it.
believe me, i miss it like crazy.
and it sucks to be in the regular cash lane.
and now it's too expensive to drive anywhere anyway.

esp in Staten Island, you pay $4.20 for the Verrazano ($10 normally) and $3 for the 3 Jersey Bridges ($8 Normally)

Is it more expensive to use EZ pass vs. just paying cash?

there is actually an EZ pass discount for certain things.
the problem is i think they charge you a certain amount of money per month to use it.

drives me nuts also. it is funny though to see the panic moves they make when they do realize. do i go left, do i go right. no, i'll just stop.
using it also saves you money. they usually charge a little less depending on the bridge/tunnel you use. i actually just changed my work hours so i can get to the bridges on non-peak hours. the GW goes up $2 at 4PM, so I now leave at 3:15 so I can get there before it. sounds small, but its $500 over a year.

I rarely use the parkway and only use the Turnpike maybe 3 times a year.
When my boyfriend and i travel out of state or a far enough distance(hour++) we borrow his mom's Prius which has EZ-Pass or we are in his brothers car which is also a Prius with EZ-Pass.
In short, neither of us travel long distances daily or enough to the point where we would require an EZ-Pass.
I also thought that they charge you a monthly/yearly fee.

I think it is the other way around.
I was one of those people who didn't get EZ Pass because I didn't travel through tolls that often except for the few times a year I'd drive up to see the family in CT. After getting it a couple of years ago, I've come to realize that it may have been the best investment I ever made. I shaved at least 30-40 minutes off my commute to CT.

There isn't a fee to use EZ-Pass, you just have to prepay.
For example, I don't travel that often on the turnpike, so I pre-pay for about 25 bucks. When my account hits about 5 bucks, I automatically am charged another 25 bucks.
I don't pay 25 bucks monthly; just when my account gets low.

Does the GWB, for example, offer a discount for the EZ Pass vs someone using cash? If not anymore, I didn't they use to?

No, there's no annual fee. Although they do charge me a $1 monthly service charge, which kind of pisses me off because I don't remember anything about that when I signed up.
Here's what they do:
When you sign up, they will automatically set your prepaid amount to $25.
Your account is automatically replenished when you've debited enough that there's $10 (or less) left.
During your first month or so, they monitor your usage.
Your replenishment amount is then automatically adjusted based on your usage.
My replenishment amount is currently around $45; at one point, it was $60.
I expect that it will drop to around $25 when I finally go home-based and don't drive the Pike as often.

The price changes for EZ Pass depending if you use it during peak or off-peak hours. Same for the Lincoln and Holland.

it makes no sense that you cannot afford it.
if you had it before, maintaining it costs you no less than actually the money you spend going through the cash lanes.
there is the initial 25 bucks that gets replenished, but think about it, if you go to the bank to grab cash to have on hand in order to pay cash, you withdraw at least 20 (+ fess if you don't use your own bank) which 5 bucks most likely get spend on tolls and 15 on other things that you would have thought twice about if you did not have the cash on hand...
(at least that;s why I never keep cash)
I think during the summer you have a lot of travelers that don't realize you can use the EZ pass in multiple states.

When E-Z Pass was still new, it wouldn't register sometimes and so people started to stop at the reader lens in the toll plaza.
Like I said, I've gone through at 25mph in those 15mph lanes and have had no problems.
But my favorites are the high-speed lanes on the Parkway ... ahhhhhh. (But, of course, it means that I have to get into the left hand lane. Grr. At least there aren't any trucks on the bulk of the Parkway.)

Yes there definitely needs to be more high speed lanes. When EZ Pass was new, if there was no gate arm, I go through at 40 if no workers were present.. but I got too many fines..

I just want to understand you people. So please tell me why.
I used to have EZ pass, but for some reason it wasn't registering all the time so I would get a bill in the mail every so often, with a picture of my license plate, for $31.... $6 (at the time) toll plus a $25 penalty. I figured it was defective so I got a new one and the same thing happened. I wasn't speeding through the toll either.
Now, when I travel from SI to NJ over the Goethals Bridge around 8am, there are no lines to get a tpk toll ticket, but the EZ pass lines are backed up around 10 cars or so. Paying the toll on the other end usually takes a minute or two, but if I am able to get over to the far left lane there is usually no line at all.
Coming home, I take the Bayonne Bridge back to Staten Island....never any traffic. The Goethals Bridge during the PM rush is always backed up.
So I deal with the tolls and don't really lose much time waiting on lines.
If I'm coming home from Brooklyn, The Verrazano Bridge is a different story no matter what time it is, I just sit on line and wait it out.
The GSP toll lines are exact change so the line (if any) usually moves pretty quickly.
It's also nice not to have that bill on my CC each month.

I live in Brooklyn and don't own a car. When my wife and I do need to drive out of the city (rarely, thank god), we rent from Avis. it is a complete crap shoot whether they have a car that has an EZ pass or not. i completely agree that EZ pass makes life much easier for us and everyone on the road by speeding up the process of going through the annoying NJ tollbooths. I love it when the car is local and has a pass. I just had a car from MA and realized their odd-looking MA turnpike pass also works down here. sometimes, however, you get stuck with a car from Ohio or somewhere without an EZ pass. Jeez, what's my point...i guess i joined in the discussion to say that sometimes the people that piss you all off for not having EZ passes are Manhattanites or Brooklynites who are renting and they might have a car with an EZ pass the following week.

I am so myopic that I have it and never even look at the statement. It gets auto deducted from my account and I use the damn thing maybe once a year, if that. I do not keep it on my window though, I just keep it in that foil envelope in my glove compartment. But if I know I am going to need it, before I go on the trip I attach it. I bet there are people that have a two cars and one pass and they are in the "other car" on the days you see them.

Honestly, I can't see how you can own and drive a car in Jersey and NOT have an EZ Pass. I lived here for maybe a month before I got tired of digging for change. I find it particularly odd that my husband lived in Jersey all his life and didn't get EZ Pass until I ordered an extra pass for his car a couple years ago. It makes travelling to his shows so much easier.

I HATE the people who feel the need to stop at EZ Pass lanes, but I can kind of understand why. I think the real issue of why people stop can be completely blamed on the toll booths at the Verrazano which for some reason do the exact opposite of EZ Pass with the arm that block the lane and won't let you pass until it reads your EZ Pass and you get to have a quick moment of staring from the cop right next to it, then it lifts it's arm and you get to go into merry old Staten Island. Aside from this bridge I don't really know of any other passing where you need to come to a complete stop on EZ Pass, every other place you can just go through even if it's as slow as 15 mph.
I also have to add, whoever invented EZ Pass Express with their 45+ mph lanes is the bestest, I love them...there's one on the turnpike and I one by the Outerbridge that makes things so much easier.
