View Full Version : 1997-2001 Jeep Cherokee vs '95 Volvo 850 Turbo
So I am car shopping and it has came down to these two cars.
I like Volvos a lot because of their safety and the turbos have some kick to them. Also it would be pretty cool having a midsize luxury car to drive around in. Volvos are not the greatest on gas but are decent.
On the other hand I do like the Jeep Cherokees, they are roomy, drive smooth, and has the 4wD for the snow/ I could do some off roading. Only problem is they are not that great on gas, i know my friend said he gets 11 MPG.
I am 16, so I don't exactly have a lot of money to spend on gasoline but at the same time an import car will cost more to fix if it breaks down.
what do you think?

I LOVED my jeep(s)!!!
(also good to have if a pretty girl needs help moving...wink wink)
But yeah, I had to get rid of mine because of the gas thing.
I really think you should look into a smaller car for the same reason.
Used cars=repairs. Learn it, Love it. Live it.
I miss my Jeep:glurps:

heh, go figure. We have a 1999 S70 GLT sitting in the yard and my wife drives a 2001 Grand Cherokee. Yes you are correct the Volvo is faster and more fun. Kind of like a go-kart.
Back in the day, IMO, Volvo's were safer but all of the other brands have pretty much caught up on the design innovations Volvo made years ago. They have hung on to the safety thing but I'm not sure how true it is anymore in comparison to other cars. Pretty much all cars have air bags, crumple zones, etc. Some are obviously safer than others.
On to cost of ownership. I assume you will buy it on a loan and since you are buying used, there will be maintenance issues along the way. You'll have your payment plus the random shit that goes wrong along the way. In general, a Jeep is less expensive to repair than a Volvo. Shit goes wrong on a Volvo, you are looking at bigger bucks.
Not sure what king of cash you have to spend but at 16, I'd go Jeep. I've had a few over the years including a CJ-5 and a CJ-7 and they have all been fun cars and relatively inexpensive to own.

My wife had a 99 Cherokee which we both absolutely loved. We just traded it in for a new Wrangler, and she cried when we did... it was a great car.
It was getting much better than 11 MPG and is better on gas than you'd think. It's also built like a tank and the engine is going to last forever. I echo the above sentiments that the Volvo is going to be much more expensive to repair, whereas with the Jeep, parts are less expensive and if you're even a little mechanically inclined you can figure out a lot yourself. They're pretty easy to work on.
Like you said, fun as hell off road too...

first, fixing a volvo will be more expensive then what you consider an "import" unless you're looking at old bmw's, saabs or porsche's, parts for toyotas and hondas are far cheaper than the two cars you listed.
and seeing that volvo is from sweden....i'm really lost.
and be realistic, how much "off roading" are you going to do? seriously? don't lie to yourself. Is it going to be enough to justify getting 50% worse gas mileage?

I wouldn't off road much. I just like the 4WD for the winter time

The problem with Cherokees is that the owners all love them because they haven't had to contort themselves in the tortuous shape you need to be in to ride in that ridiculous backseat. I will not ride in the back of one of those things ever again.

My wife drove a Wrangler for a couple of years. We discovered another "Jeep thing" that made me want to veer that abortion of aerodynamics into oncoming traffic. Whenever someone in another jeep is driving past you, they wave.
