View Full Version : I need some hired muscle

Is there any sort of service I can hire to move furniture up some narrow stairs if it's already on-site?
I have some big, unwieldy pieces of furniture that can be moved out of my first-floor apartment rather easily.
The problem is, my father is near retirement age with a bad knee, and my brother and I working together like a team is like Dean and Hank Venture on a double date.
So they can be moved to the site, just need to be moved ON THE SITE that I need.

Ask friends for help, or see if the stuff can be disassembled.

Pick up a couple of day labor guys. Tell them that you just need something moved. $10-20 a piece for the hour? There are plenty here, they hang out waiting for work near stop & shop or 7 eleven. The later in the day it is the more desperate they are for the bucks.

Call a moving company and find out what their rate is to just hire 2 guys. My ex owned a moving company and they would do this sometime. If ppl were renting a U-Haul and needed it packed properly they would just hire the guys or like in your case, they needed furniture moved in whether it was up a couple of flights of stairs or just pieces that were awkward to get in.
The thing is it will cost you more than if you get a couple of guys off the street, but the added bonus is that they should know what they are doing (Dave & Casey's experience notwithstanding) and get the job done easier and with less damage to both the walls and furniture.

I think that's what I'm gonna do; ring a few moving places on Monday and get some prices.
Everything can be de-constructed or moved by my family except these four pieces.
(An armoir, a long (6 foot plus) dresser and 2 heavy-ass couches that need to go up three floors)

Don't take this the wrong way but...
paying a moving company to move a few items up a couple of floors is un-manly and a slap in the face of all your male friends, ....yes even your father.
There has to be someone who can help; a neighbor or co-worker.
Keep your manhood!

Budday, I'll totally help you move that stuff. For real.
EDIT!!!
and by "stuff", I was referring to the furniture... not the coke.

There's a difference between manhood and being a good friend. Most of my able-bodied friends don't live near me. I wouldn't ask stugots to drive from Brooklyn just to my house (especially with gas prices) to move three pieces of furniture and then send him home again.
I spend 40 hours a week with my co-workers. One minute more turns my stomach. Seriously. I'm always encouraged to join their "happy hour", and I'm like... "Hm. Spend money to drink and loosen my tongue and tell people I think they're two faced, or go home to my beautiful wife. Hmmmmmm."
(And for all the people on the board... thanks for the offers, but as i don't know most of you, I don't have the insurnace to cover you unless you die... sorry!)

look at it this way, if one of your friends needed help moving something won't you want to help them out?
I have a friend who lives 45 miles away, if either he or I need help from each other we make the trip. Its also an excuse to hang out with each other.

I already did do that. In payment, I had bottle rockets thrown at me.

mitigating factor; he's got a friendly yet angry wife and a really nice house that he invites me over to time to time.

I know a guy that's clean but might still have connections... besides DiabloSammich assures me that payment for landscapers can be done in avocados?
craigslist was my first thought too.. they have a section for posting odd jobs that are basically come over and I'll kick you a few bucks for some cigarettes and Boone's Farm.
