What I would do if I were you is try to set up a time maybe during Christmas and try to have a conversation with them. If I were you I'd be shocked a tad but I would really love to meet them finally.

The fact that you couldn't find what to talk about isn't surprising given the length of time between the last time you met them and now. They may have felt just as awkward making conversation as you.

The best way to get reaquainted with them is in person. Go out to eat or someplace you can sit and talk.

Until you get reaquainted (over 12 years!) it's perfectly understandable that you might have to search for topics.

Remember that they probably want to be reaquainted as much as you. You'll be fine, just talk to them.
