I am in the union where I work and I am known for doing 110% and it is always noticed by management and I have a solid work ethic. I also get spoken to every once in a while by shop stuards regarding going above and beyond and how it makes others look less effective or whatever and I have been accused of being a management kiss ass/brown noser, whatever. I try and help everyone and feel everyone should give their all because it makes the whole company look good when you do. My company is kind of big and well known and the office I work in has a reputation for having winers and issue causers in it, and while I love most of the people I work with, I know that the problematic people cause a negative light to be cast on the group and I have gotten tired of it. I tried a few weeks ago to get a different job in a completely unrelated part of the company and I was basically accepted for the job, but someone in my office went to the union about it because I was short on some qualifications and the job got pulled out from me after they had offered it to me. Whatever. I am scared of change in general and I know it would be risky, but I always look on the internal job postings and I applied for a management job that has some interesting aspects to it and I have heard some people in management say that I would be a good fit for it, and I have an interview on Monday for it.
The company was recently bought out by a european company and they are making changes left and right and I wonder if it would be a good time to take a chance to see what can happen. I know that since my fears of change have always held me back and kept me from achieving success if now would be a good time to take the plunge?
Would you jump now or wait a few years for things to settle down, knowing what I just outlined?

The fact that you have to ask that question is the reason why I hate unions, they bitch cause you work normal making the lazy look bad, what a fucking crock.

Take management, it always increases earning potential and the only down side would be if the new company is planning on downsizing everything, then again they could just move the jobs and make the union irrelevant.....

I would take management especially since the union fucked you over with that other position, its kinda obvious someone has it in for you working so hard.

Thats what I was thinking, that my efforts land me in hot water with my own union. Instead of them seeing hard work as a good sign or as something to tout to management about, they do just the opposite. I know it will be more money then I make now. I will get a company car, I will get an expense account and manage clients and make decisions and be rewarded for my innovation. But the scardy cat side of me worries about the downsizing and shifting of jobs out of state or whatever too. But that could happen in the union too, and I have a feeling that if I prove myself that that will protect me too: I only see them get rid of lax management people, but the ones I see always staying around are the go getters.
