There's been some good movies about wine in the last few years....
Bottle Shock..... out now
A Good Year
and Sideways....
Being a wine connoisseur is such a decadent thing to be. I tried to learn about wine when I got out of college but I could never figure it out and I never tried anything real expensive.
Does anyone know much about wine that doesn't come in screw top?

don't diss the screwtop - there is a great 11buck bottle of wine named Pillar Box Red with a screwtop...

I know some brands that I tried while at work. I know what I like, but I don't know much about wines.
Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay
Gordon Brothers Sauvignon Blanc
Row 11 Pinot Noir
Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon
Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon
...these were a few I remember liking
Hogue makes a consistently good screw-top wine; a lot of wineries are moving in the direction of the screw-top

More mid-priced companies are going to start going to screw tops also. Besides being more economical for them, cork is not something that has a never ending supply. There are those who also defend screw tops because it eliminates the chance of a bad cork contaminating the wine.

There are your wine standards..

Anything in the wine spectators top 100 will do. Pre 2000 silver oak.. 1996 cing cepages etc... But the real trick is to find that supreme 'affordable' bottle... the good part is that this requires tasting!

We live in wine country and taste at least once a month. There is a 11 dollar bottles (tobin james notorious) that easily beat silver oaks imo.

But these can only be found through tastings or trial and plenty of error. Think of it as lottery scratchers that get you drunk.

just stick with the wines that don't come in card board boxes and keep trying.
screw top, plastic cork, regular old cork... it makes no difference.

start with the lighter wines and get into the heavy reds.
Best, like Mob County is doing, go on wine tours and do a lot of tastings. A great Cab can taste wonderful from one winery and not so great from another.
You can find local wineries that have awesome wines that may never see a wine enthusiast rating, and they are still not to be dissed.

I agree. There are a lot of good inexpensive (sometimes screw top) wines. New Zealand and Australia put out some decent stuff and the prices are generally reasonable.

Go on wine. com. They have an option to search for high rated wines for under $20. Occasionally you'll get something you don't like that much -- use it for sangria or cooking. Most of the time you get something decent without spending a fortune. Keep track of what you like.

i switched to box wine...they are actually making a lot of good wine in boxes now...there is this one australian wine i have been buying that is great...and it lasts like 10 times longer than an open bottle of corked wine

i dont see the issue with boxed wine nowdays

While Stags Leap and Silver Oak produce fine cab's, they are way over-valued in my opinion due to their "name"

Anything from France in 05 rocks. All Rhone valley's, Burgundy's, Alsace, Bordeaux, Chablis, Beaujolais, plenty of village wines and such to be had for good value / extreme quality.

Psst...

I'll let you in on a little secret. Franciscan Oakville Estates Cabernet.

The Oakville Estates vineyards and the Opus One vineyards are seperated by a single dirt road. So for $15-20 you can pick up a great Cab with the same terroir characteristics of a $100+ bottle.

^^ Oakville puts out some great wines.

Also, Opus sometimes sells off grapes not used in making their top tier wines to off labels like Dominus and other in the area that make great wines for $15 - $20 bucks using the same grapes going into Opus One.

I'm going to Napa Valley next week for my vacation/belated honeymoon/one year anniversary with my husband. I am so excited!

And thanks for the tip on Franciscan, nate...I LOVE Opus One and if I can find a cheaper close to it version, I'd be so happy!

Yum...wine...

When you go to Napa, go visit Schramsburg - the cave tour is really cool even if you don't like sparkling wine (and not 'stuffy' either). You have to make a reservation - but it's worth it http://www.schramsberg.com/visit.html

If you like Zins - head over to Sonoma County (just west of Napa) they have Zin tours that list where to go.

I work for a good number of the wineries so PM me if you need any other ideas.

I've decided to boycott any wines with animals on the label. Some marketing study showed that if you put a cute animal on the label sales go up something like 25%. Marketing Assholes!

I like Pinot, even a Cab Franc. But I'm actually more fond of German whites like Gewurztraminer and Reisling.

I finally saw Sideways recently - really great ... I liked it a lot. One of the weirdest scenes though was kind of just thrown in as an aside - where it seemed they were making a commentary on low-class sexuality. Funny shit.

I dig the whole wine freak thing though (even though I'm ... what's the old term 'reformed' myself) people who bleed that info and their love for the product is pretty fascinating to me.

I can't do either... the German whites are too sweet for me. Especially Gewuerztraminer. A Riesling I will drink needs to be from the Alsace regions. It's a drier wine.

a friend's winery had a three legged dog on the label. not cute, but still a great gimmick

Pretty much the only wine I drink...as a matter of fact I am having a glass right now.
Naked Grape, not bad but not the best by any stretch...
My favorites are the Australian ones.

Bottle Shock is a fun movie so you wine buffs should definately check it out.
It's about the historic moment when California won a blind taste test in France in 1976.
actually they won both the White and the Red. They redid it 30 years later and won again.
Chateau Montelena was the white and Stag's Leap the red.
Still I haven't had the sublime orgasm a truely great wine supposedly delivers....
hopefully someday.

If you want a reasonably priced (nee, cheap) sauvignon blanc, I'd go with Sutter Home. It's about $6 a bottle. It's clean and crisp and never disappoints.

If you like Aussie Shiraz, try some Rhone Valley Syrah blends. Chateauneuf du pape being the best.

my new favorite "daily drinker" red. Goes with almost anything off the grill and works especially nice with BBQ sauced foods (ribs and even chicken). It also goes with popcorn and wish sanwiches. Costs $10-13 for a big 1.5 liter at A&P.

(under $10 a bottle) -Jaboulet "parallel 45" Cotes du Rhone. Good for chat room guzzling too.
