Right now I have mostly non-stick T-Fal that's falling apart and a few cheap ass Chef's knives that I picked up somewhere. But we're registered for All Clad pot and pans and Wusthof knives for the wedding. I gotta pick up a nice cast iron skillet and a cast iron Dutch oven...I'll probably go with Lodge.

Calaphon? I think that's the pans and pots. I think - the registering process was a blur and was over 2 years ago but I seem to remember that name. They're great - I think they're the kind of non-stick that won't rub off and give you a strange lump in your neck.

The knives are Chicago cutlery - nothing but Target's finest. Classy. Ya know, with a wood block and a sharpener.

Speaking of knives - please post if you've ever sold Cutco or if you own them ... goddamit, I love running into people who did that and trading stories. I have to say, they were good knives - I almost regret giving the sample set to my mother.

"Full tang, surgical steel blade and the handle is made out of a polymer that's used in bowling balls... now I'm just going to put these 6 peices of crappy low grade leather here..." hahaha.

i am not sure if you guys out that ways have tj maxx or marshalls but its like the name brand stuff trickles down to these stores for super cheap. You should check these places out.

I was watching this small set of knives for a while and finally picked them up for 29.00. It was originally 49.oo from this store. It was a nice calphalon set. Link is here from amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/Calphalon-Katana-Japanese-Steel-santoku/dp/B000VQWJKM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1219842332&sr=8-6)

They are awesome knives. I also have a Henkel. Want to get a Global though.

I also have a 12" stainless Calphalon Omelet pan.
And a huge Calphalon skillet to go over my middle burner.

then some cheapy nonstick crap.

Waiting to save some up to buy some real pans. from my secret shop.:dry::huh:

Yup we have both TJ Maxx and Marshalls out here. That's a good idea to check them out. Maybe I'll take a ride tonight to the one by me.

Exactly, my girl brought them with her when she moved in. Before that she would use metal on them which is why they're in the state they're in..

I have a nice stainles steel pot that is flawless and I use it for brewing beer. I occasionally use it for sauce or steaming. I picked it up at an Asian Food market by my house. They always have a few good deals on pots and pans.

Wusthof Grand Prix.

That's the set I'm getting. I was going to go for the Shun knives, but they're way more pricey than the Wusthof and I know I won't see a difference.

To many pans too mention, but off of the top of my head my knives are Wusthof Classic, Henckels, Joyce Chen, Global, Shun and I think a few L'Econome paring knives my sister gave me.

ADF
08-27-2008, 08:19 AM
For the record, it's spelled "Henckels."

I used to work at Williams-Sonoma, so I've managed to collect a mish-mash of le creuset, all-clad, calphalon, and even a mauviel copper fry-pan (those things are expensive, thank goodness for freebies).

I really need to upgrade my knives as I've just got the basics, a Wusthof chef's knife and a Shun paring knife, but that covers 90% of your cutting needs.

MY knives are one 8" Calphalon chef's knife, one 5" Calphalon chef's knife, 1 bird's beak paring knife (Calphalon) and my prized hollow-ground Henckels 7" santoku knife.

(All of the above need sharpening. This will happen after we move. I also want to fill in the remaining knives I need, like a new bread knife, within the next couple of years so I can finally pitch the freaking Ikea knives.)

The remainder of the set is filled out with some cheap-ass knives from Ikea that have serrated blades, don't chop for shit, can't be sharpened ... and freaking lightweight plastic handles. Oh, and all the blades are warped because they suck. (I hate these knives with a passion and really hate that I actually spent my own money on them. They suck. Of all the cuts or nicks I've ever gotten from my knives, ALL of them have been from these pieces of shit.)

HIS knives are by Cutco. For the most part, I don't like them. HOWEVER, I am partial to using the spreader one for icing cakes.

From the bridal shower or as engagement gifts, we have (all unused):
* a LeCreuset enameled cast-iron Dutch Oven
* a full "starter set" of Emerilware stainless-steel pots & pans
* an Emerilware cast-iron double-burner grill/griddle
* a Joyce Chen carbon-steel wok
* Nonstick tube pan
* Nonstick bundt pan

Currently in use are our cobbled-together from college mismatched pots & pans (Ikea, Cook's Club and Farberware), a Williams-Sonoma anodized grill pan, the Lodge cast iron skillet (and drippy lid) Matty got me for Christmas 2 years ago, my Ikea "Pyra" wok and a lot of nylon, plastic and silicone implements.

We still need to go through all the new toys I got from the bridal shower (etc.) to evaluate what we still need for the kitchen. Like a half-sheet pan (what I asked for because it's a multi-tasker, rather than the super-deluxe, well-intentioned cookie sheets my mother gave me) and a cookie rack like Alton Brown has.

Ugh. Typing this post made me angry.

Ceramic knives stay sharp forever. I think they're technically made out of zirconium oxide which is very similar in chemical structure to cubic zirconia. They're brittle as hell, though.

My wife is pissed at me beyond infinity because 95% of the wedding and bridal shower gifts she has received are currently unopened, in storage, at my parents house.

We have a small kitchen, and we were making due with all the pots and pans we already had, so we packed up everything and left it in storage until we bought a house.

Every time we watch food network, she gives me shit like "Oh, I could cook that... if I had equipment..."

4 more weeks, babe.

- 3 cast iron pans (super cheap, last forever, great to cook with)
- a few non-stick pans
- 1, 2, & 4 quart sauce pans
- 20 piece Tools of the Trade knife set (12 steak knives, butcher's knife, utility knife, bread knife, plus a few others i've hardly ever used--one looks like a jailhouse shiv)
- heat-resistant rubberized utensils (spatula, fork, spoons, tongs) so as not to scratch up the pots and pans
