While listening to the monday bestofs i've just heard something that makes me wonder. What does the future hold. XM has decieded to carry some of the weekend saturday football games on 202? What what? How can this be. I don't remember them ever asking me. I usually count on saturday to catchup on the shows i've had to miss during the week. Are we also going to miss out on the saturday virus shows? Blowhard Dr steve CT and jivin? nathan and sam ... firts we miss out on shows for a week now i hear this news... For the love of god someone save us from the corprate monster.

This will only happen a couple of times at most. They don't have enough empty channels to accommodate all of their baseball and college football contracts. Normally, this isn't a problem as so many games have different times, and baseball is done at the end of the month, but there are some instances that too many games are running at the same time. Sirius has to do this every Sunday with their NFL coverage.
I know some people are looking for any sign that our shows are not going to survive, but this isn't one of them.

O, A, R, and F kinda showed the bosses how much the weekends meant to them by allowing the drivel they have on there now. It's nice they give their interns some airtime to learn their craft, but every weekend???

Yeah, I'd gladly take a pre-emption for some sporting event over another "Brooklyn Night".
The irony of this, though, is that what actually did get pre-empted was a show by someone with actual radio experience.

Wow i didn't hear any games last year... If it's that intrusive i'll have no worries. As for the interns every weekend it helpts to break up the replays specialy if i've listened all week

I love both shows but 2 shows != a channel from a programming perspective. As far as replays go, there are plenty of ways to record the show.

202 has been a channel that XM has listed it could preempt for sports since it became part of the regular subscription package. Its only happened a few times that I'm aware of until recently.

I think since now XM is actively running a promo about the potential pre-emptions... (and lazlow got bumped to a lesser degree) more people are taking notice.
I can't say I EVER remember XM running a 30 second spot on 202 before saying that preemptions can take place. Did they ever do this before? I dont think they did.

yeah i thought they always did too. And only fairly recently did they start airing original programming on saturday nights that people would care if it was Pre-Emp

Yeah and for us, the problem is major...we have to make our plane reservations 21 days in advance, but XM can only give us 10 days notice that we'll be preempted. So we're off the air for live shows until college football is over.
I'm sure it has to do with running out of bandwidth on the satellite. I don't know if everyone has noticed, but channels like FOX NEWS and CNN are on a low bandwidth channel, while 202 is basically CD quality. they can eke out a few more channels by stealing from 202's bandwidth than if they borrow from, say, the Olde Tyme Radio channel.
Just part of doing business in this new merged-world, I'm afraid. It's poopy, though!

its also because of the merger. If you notice, we get alot more CFB games on XM now then we did, cause i think they just combined the 2 companies deals, and that left them with more games then channels

I listen to the Old Time Radio most nights at a sleeping aid. It was off the air last Saturday night until midnight. So I am guessing that that channel will be preempted before the virus.

Actually, I don't think that the deals were "combined". It's just that the SEC deal got made too late to get college football season last year, so it never impacted the channel lineup like it will this year.

As part of the merger, they had to sign an agreement with the FCC to hold rates steady for 3 years.

Not going to matter much if their contract isn't renewed.

What's the likelihood of that happening?
I think that they're simply attempting to generate some tension.

Tough to say.
Mel seemed pretty adamant that he wanted exclusive content.
While I personally wish they would, I don't know if the boys are ready to throw away the KROQ gig.
I don't pay close enough attention, but I thought they were doing pretty damn well in NYC.
Kind of tough to just let go of the #1 market.
We'll see.

Wow...that I have to check out. Honestly, I don't know of an airport near me that flies Southwest, but I absolutely will look into it. We just heard from Don Wicklin and we may be able to do the show from the Nashville studios, which would rule.
Tough to say.

Can you imagine being in that position? It'd be a tough decision to make. I really think they love XM, though, but that terrestrial #1 NYC market is an old school "I've made it" destination. I would guess they'd stick with XM given the right incentives and if there was an ultimatum given, if only for the freedom it gives them. Also, I guess in a post-fully-merged world that a return to afternoons isn't an impossibility. That'd never happen on KROQ. It'll be interesting to watch.

Also, I think Mel is off on this one (though what do I know?)...O&A are exclusive for 90+% of the country!

I don't agree at all, I love these little sideline shows. It's part of the whole experience, like this messageboard, and it gives me a nice sense of community within the fans and show members because the line is further blurred.
That said, I download them, I don't listen live; because seriously its fucking Saturday night, go DO something.
