View Full Version : Microbrews - whatcha got??
I am currently drinking a Lancaster Brewing Co. Milk Stout.
Fan-fucking-tastic!!!
Just a notch below Guinness for best stout in my book.

Then you should try Mackeson's Triple Stout or Great Lakes Blackout Stout.
I'm preparing to open a nice Dogfish head 90 minute IPA. Mmmm Mmmm Good!

southern tier brewing company (http://www.southerntierbrewing.com/)
this brewery opened up a few years back about 5 minutes from where i grew up. all of their beers are absolutely fantastic. lots of flavor and lots of hops. i was up there on saturday and got absolutely shitfaced on their beer "unearthly". its an imperial IPA at about 12% alcohol. drink a few of those and you are set for the night. i know they have expanded distribution a ton so there might be some at large distributors around the northeast. i even saw it in a few bars in chicago when i was there a few weeks back.
if you see it, pick some up. you won't be disappointed.

Will do.
And I love, love, love, love, LOVE Dogfish Head 90 minute.
In fact, all the Dogfish products are phenominal. I have to pick up some of their Punkin Ale that just came out with the seasonals.
I make quite a few pilgrimages to their restaurant in Southern De. a few times a year.
Lancaster Brewing Co. has really impressed me, though. I've been drinking them for about a year.
I feel sorry for those of you that do not live by Michigan. Ill take any Bell's or Arcadia products down with extreme prejudice. Drinking a Oberon now and loving it!:drunk:

Love Great Lakes, can't stand Dog Fish Head. There is one called something Monkey, I can't remember the exact name, but I remember it being very good. Came from Shangy's so anyone around the Lehigh Valley should check it out.

I used to go to shangys at least once a week when I was at school at Lehigh. I love that place.

Great Lakes should have fall seasonals coming soon, if not already.
I really like the Bell's beers too. Two-Hearted is a fine pale ale. Founder's Kentucky Breakfast is also a really good stout. People tell me that Jolly Pumpkin is good too, but I wouldn't know, nobody distributes them around here.
Gotta say that I'm loving the 'King of Microbrews,' Sam Adams's Octoberfest batch this year.
Very very good. Better than last year's, which was also good.

Beer made in Juneau. Tastes great and preferred by moose-eating rednecks before they knock up their 17 year old girlfriends

We have a brewery her called Four Peaks Brewery (http://www.fourpeaks.com/beers.asp) that has a beer called Kiltlifter. Its a very nice Scottish Ale and is one of my favorite microbrews around.

Avery is microbrew out of Boulder, CO that I grew to love when I went to college there. They had this limited release brew called The Beast (http://www.averybrewing.com/BigBeers/seasonal/thebeast). It has 16.4% alcohol. It has 6 different hops and 6 different malts in it. I think a larger bottle of it ran close to $16 when I got one a few years back. The thing was delicious and had soooo much flavor to it that it took me a minute to get used to it.

I'm a big fan of the Ithaca Beer, especially the Nut Brown and the Cascazilla (a hoppy red beer that is a take off on the local Cascadilla Creek). The Pale Ale is so-so. For good pale ale, I go for Geary's out of Portland, ME. For domestic beer, microbrews are the only way to go.

I was finally able to get my lupulin-stained mitts on a dogfish head 90. Fantastic and worth the 2 buck 12 ouncer.
Out here we have Russian River brewing. Their Pliny the Elder double IPA has a similar quality to the 90 minute. But their Belgians are fucking fantastic. Their brewpub makes a decent pizza, cooked proper in a very hot oven.
I've also been trying as many Saisons as I can lately, domestic and foreign. Lagunitas makes a dman good affordable one, but the standard Dupont Saison is unbeatable.
Just recently got addicted to Hoegaarden, a belgian Wit. Fantastic yeast character and a beautiful shine when poured proper.
I've got my own Belgian pale and tripel in secondaries, but have been too lazy/busy to carb and bottle it.

the best beer ive ever had was a hoegaarden. i was in brussels, walking around on a hot day, sat down at an outside cafe and was served an ice cold hoegaarden. it was the most refreshing experience of my life. i wish all beer experiences could be like that.

Since moving to South Jersey, I've grown very fond of Flying Fish

Microbrews in the Belgian style are my favorites. Any suggestions?
I'm not particularly fond of Brooklyn Lager, but I like their Pennant Ale

I've been drinking that stuff like crazy this year.
I've been picking up a 'make your six pack' at my local liquor stores the last few weeks.
Some of my favs:
-Russian River Damination (and pretty much anything else by Russian River)
-Lancaster Brewing Co Amish Four Grain Pale Ale (and LBC's Hop Hog IPA)
-Dogfish Head Midas Touch
-Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron
-Hercules Double IPA
-Yeti Imperial Stout
-Fordham Helles Lager
-Twin Lakes Route 52 Pilsner (and Greenville Pale Ale)
-Anchor Steam Lager
-Flying Fish (anything)
-Harpoon IPA (although it tastes a lot like Dogfish 60 minute)
There's a pretty good place in South Philly called the South Philly Tap Room that gets a lot of good stuff and rotates its taps regularly.
Also, believe it or not, the Firewaters (a side-project of Hooters) in the area around here get a ton of great taps in.

Last month on a trip to Chicago, I got my hands on Jolly Pumpkin E.S. Bam, Brooklyn Local No. 2 and New Belgium 1554. They were all really good, I'd recommend them. My next target is De Struise Black Albert.

this is the best beer I have ever had (and I'm usually a pale ale or even an IPA drinker).

If you like Dogfish Head 90 minute, try the 120 minute. Expensive but eye opening. Just make sure you decant and let it chill for a few minutes before drinking.
Best beer ever brewed is GUMBALLHEAD from Three Floyds. Alpha King is pretty good too if you get the chance.
Bell's Third Coast, Oberon, and Two-Hearted pretty good in the spring time.
Try the Goose Island IPA if you like Fat Tire and are in the midwest.
Went to school in NYC and must say that the midwest is the place to be if you like microbrews.

Went there few weeks ago and loved the Irish Dry Stout. Pours like a Guinness and is creamy and delicious. Smooth as hell. The Mrs. had the Amber Ale and really liked it.
Food's not too bad either, a mix of traditional pub fare and neo-American cuisine (I guess that's what you call stuff like hummus, butternut squash gnocchi and statler chicken breast). Reasonable prices. Definitely picking up a growler next time I go.

Premium + Shipping + NJ Alcohol import laws = no thanks.
I'm too cheap to do that.
Besides, we live right near two local microbreweries (Triumph in Princeton and Harvest Moon in New Brunswick) and can get Flying Fish and Lancaster Brewery products in our local liquor stores.

McSorley's Black and Tan is damn good as well.
Not a fan of McSorley's at all. Tried a few of their brews.
Troegs Nugget Nectar + Great Divide Hercules Double IPA = happily drunk.
Anyone know where, if anywhere you can get Russian River's Pliny the Elders and Younger or Damnation on the East Coast.
There's a few places around Philly that serve it on tap, but as far as I can tell it's not distributed in stores around here.
I love their stuff, but they're very, very selective about their distribution from what I've heard.
I talked to a bar owner around here who has it on tap who said they basically had to fight the distributor just to get it.
