Here's the thing: how can you run a campaign that's been as viciously negative as McCain's has been, including hiring the guy who attacked him for his "black daughter", and then say "We need to heal our partisan divides"?
It doesn't wash. Awful speech.
From Barracuda to Don't Stop Believing?????
McCain needs to get someone new on the jukebox.

Watching this tonite, i found myself feeling an odd sense of famiiarity.....like i've seen this all before in some horrible, albeit high budget, cheesy movie depicting some leader type handing down his directives to the hollow and loyal fools.
McCain the Soldier, the warrior, the compassionate maverick, the hot head, the proud father, the.........does any of this jive?
Fuck Russia.....but he hates war?
He's at once everything, and its opposite.
What the fuck, man?
Or this:

Who the hell thought that 'drill, baby, drill' would be a catchphrase that would sweep the nation?
I've heard it like eight times this week .
Didn't Larry Kudlow start the whole "drill, drill, drill" thing?
Fine w/ me to drill all ya want up in AK etc but its like putting a sponge bob band aid on a sucking chest wound.

I think he meant Hillary, but all she'll do is remind people (including myself) what the postal abbreviation for Alaska is:
"AK AK AK. AK AK AK AK AK AK!!"

Look, I'll say it...why the fuck should I care McCain was a POW? I appreciate the severity of the trauma the guy went through and that he survived and has ended up where he is, but what the hell does it have to do with him convincing me to vote for him for president? Unless he's at risk of facing being tossed in a water caged and stabbed with bamboo sticks once he takes office, I really don't care in the here and now about what he went through in regards of how it relates to this campaign, because it doesn't. It means nothing in terms of whether or not he can be president. Managing foreign and domestic affairs in today's world means dick-all in relation to having spent way too long living the Deer Hunter.

I agree.
But they would say that Americans all through the years have chosen their presidents on character more than policy objective, and that you need to have someone's who's character you trust making judgments.
I would expect to hear more about the 'character' of a McCain/Palin ticket in the coming weeks. After all, they're going to have a hard time divorcing themselves from the Bush record of the last eight years, so that's probably their best shot, is to appeal to that.

Obama/Palin
He'll reach his hand out to anyone... As long as they're not taller.
I should not have laughed at that.

Come on, you know what speeches like these are about. It's a chance to humanize the candidate and make him more appealing to show that one life-changing experience that made him the man he is today. We've seen this before: JFK and PT-109, Reagan as a young lifeguard who saved some drowning kids, Clinton as the "Man from Hope" who stood up to his alcoholic step-father....
What gets lost in the POW thing, and what McCain SHOULD mention more, is that even after all that suffering he endured, he and then-Rep. Pete Peterson led the charge to normalize relations with Vietnam. I don't know if I'd be so forgiving to a country who made me suffer. That would play well to his "I will reach out my hand to the other side" mantra.
Ultimately with McCain, he sounds like he's running for Secretary of State. For both Obama and McCain, these speeches are the "big picture" presentations. The debates are where both are going to be called on to answer "so how are you going to do it/pay for it".

The Republicans have controlled the White House and Congress for the last eight years and now they want us to believe they are outsiders who can come into D.C. and clean things up? Bush was a Republican, right? I seriously don't get this "we are the true party of change" theme. At one point McCain was a maverick. I loved that he called Rumsfeld the worst SECDEF in history but he is back in the fold now. I am reading a book now about life in Baghdad's Green Zone and it is so depressing how badly the Republicans fucked up the occupation. It wasn't just incompetence but petty little issues like not bringing in qualified State people to help in Iraq because they aren't pro-life.
Sure, McCain was critical and I like him better than the foaming at the mouth Cheneyites but he can't escape the fact that they have been in charge since 2001.
What did Jeffrey Toobin from CNN think about McCain's speech?

The women on the fence (not the staunch Republicans) are not going to boo hoo over a man DARING to go after Paling anyway. To do so would be horrifically sexist.

Yea about that use of Barracuda: (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/)
Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart said Thursday night that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease and desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign over their use of 'Barracuda.'
"We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We
hope our wishes will be honored," the group said in a statement that said they "condemn" the use of the song at the Republican convention.

You know, I've wondered about this Epo. I think there's a good chance that her campaigning will be tepid at best. I don't think she's done with presidential aspirations.
Plus, at some point if she draws too much attention, she's going to mix up the Obama message. If she can take McCain/Palin down a peg then turn it to Obama that will be something. If she's up there defending her turf as the most powerful woman in American Politics, that's not so good.
I think Hillary's strongest point is Roe v Wade.
In my opinion.

And it's all meaningless when it comes to being president. I'm dying for someone to find a candidate who went through something really ridiculous with absolutely nothing to do with being president or politics, like he was inside a defective bandsaw workshop that somehow fell on a dynamite factory being attacked by a herd of rabid rhinos and he LIVED and he becomes president because of that.
I say that all of these boasted about or continually flogged feats of strength and character have to be tested once the candidate takes office, at least once a term, preferably in them challenging another world leader in a contest where if we win they have to do whatever we say. Like, McCain challenges the president of Iran to a locked in a cage and starved contest, and the president of Iran is all like, "you're so ON, buddy, I do this to guys every day" and McCain just nods and smiles and looks back at the American people and gives us a big wink and we all collectively wink back and then he wins and the day is saved and everything awesome.

You're talking Festivus my friend.
Stop making sense. TO THE TIGER CAGES WITH THEE SAYS ME.
Cool! Then I can run for office!
Remember that moment in Senator McCain's speech in which he appeared to stand in front of a "green screen"? In the convention it was a much larger shot of "Walter Reed", which would make sense in the flow of his speech.
One problem though, they used the wrong Walter Reed. The McCain people used a photo of Walter Reed Middle School in California rather than Walter Reed Medical Center (http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/mccains_speech_and_the_walter.php).
He must have the biggest bunch of fuck-ups on his team ever.

With the first daily poll available that accounts for Palin's speech, Obama still has a 4% lead.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/110065/Gallup-Daily-Obamas-Lead-Now-Points.aspx
Support for Obama since just before the Democratic National Convention kicked off on Aug. 25 has ranged from 44% to 50%, while McCain's support has ranged from 41% to 46%. Whereas the race was initially tied at 45%, Obama pulled into an eight-point lead at several points over the course of his convention. It now appears the Republican National Convention may be helping McCain to recoup some of his losses, though with Obama's current four-point lead, the entire convention period to this point has still been a net plus for Obama.
