It makes your clothes and breath stink.
I costs 7 bucks a pack.
It makes you a social outcast.

Not to mention;
Heart disease
Respiratory problems.
Stained teeth and receding gum lines.
That oh, so pleasant "hack"
etc.

So?
Why do you still do it?

Being a non-smoker is the one health-related thing I've got going for me!

Boredom is what keeps me smoking still, and for some odd reason I still enjoy it even though I understand all the bad things that are associated with smoking.

I can't stand when people do that. Living in the land of "People Who Can't Mind Their Own Business" (Florida.) I get that all the time or I will get a person who will tell me a whole story about some family member they have that has cancer due to smoking. When I really could care less because I don't know these people.

Great thread. Smoking cigs demonstrates man's unlimited capacity to defy logic. I often give my students crap about it. their clothes really do reek of it.

No student has yet to deny the cool, I'm a rebel factor; nothing else explains those first few packs of hacking and nausea. Addiction explains the next thousand packs

If you're gonna fill your lungs with toxic smoke, make it marywanna and at least catch a buzz rather than just maintain a jones and give your hands something to do

i enjoy the whole experience of a cigarette, plus a smoke goes great with a tall, cold beer.

i feel a bond with fellow smokers, especially in this pu$$y society we've become where we have to huddle around an empty doorway in the rain with pine-tree air fresheners hanging from our necks, so as not to offend the sensitive little pansies who start to cry if they get a whiff of tobacco.

i plan on slowing down and quitting by my next birthday, but that's still almost a year away, so we'll see how that goes...

Actually I don't think smokers are considered social outcasts.

They still travel in packs outside bars and the workplace.

I've never been a smoker and I guess I can see people who are hooked continuing but what I don't understand is why younger people are still doing it.

Is it still considered " cool " in this day and age ?

You'd think today's kids would be so much more aware of the drawbacks.

Plus as somebody said the price is insane.

it's this "everyone has to be protected from everything" mentality that makes us pussies. if i do quit, it will be a combination of potential long-term health affects and the ridiculous amount of taxes per pack. the cost of a pack has more than quadrupled since i started smoking a little more than 10 years ago.

give it another decade, and alcohol, fast food, and any other "bad" thing you can think of will be so prohibitively taxed, that eventually we'll all be eating soylent green and drinking Brawndo like the good little lemmings we're supposed to be.

There's a guy- I don't know if you've heard about this guy, he's been on the news a lot lately. There's a guy- he's English, I don't think we should hold that against him, but apparently this is just his life's dream because he is going from country to country. He has a senate hearing in this country coming up in a couple of weeks. And this is what he wants to do. He wants to make the warnings on the packs bigger. Yeah! He wants the whole front of the pack to be the warning. Like the problem is we just haven't noticed yet. Right? Like he's going to get his way and all of the sudden smokers around the world are going to be going, "Yeah, Bill, I've got some cigarettes.. HOLY SHIT! These things are bad for you! Shit, I thought they were good for you! I thought they had Vitamin C in them and stuff!" You fucking dolt! Doesn't matter how big the warnings are. You could have cigarettes that were called the warnings. You could have cigarettes that come in a black pack, with a skull and a cross bone on the front, called tumors and smokers would be lined up around the block going, "I can't wait to get my hands on these fucking things! I bet you get a tumor as soon as you light up! Numm Numm Numm Numm Numm" Doesn't matter how big the warnings are or how much they cost. Keep raising the prices, we'll break into your houses to get the fucking cigarettes, ok!? They're a drug, we're addicted, ok!? Numm Numm Numm Numm Numm *wheeze*

Before I quit, I always smoked the packs that said "Smoking By Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury"... figured if I ever got pregnant the effects of smoking on the fetus would be the least of my problems... now if it said "Smoking may result in your balls falling off" on the pack... well, I might have quit much sooner.

Second of all, mind your own fucking business Tub.

And lastly, smokes are only 3-4 bucks a pack here. Love the land of low taxes.

It's been a couple of years since I've smoked a cigarette (I'm 25 now), and I don't see myself starting back, but I've always found other people's contempt for smokers as really self-righteous and obnoxious. Why so much interest in someone else's habit?

At the same time, this must be a really lousy time in history to be a smoker. In another five years, will there be any places left that allow smoking?

I quit about a year and a half ago, after quitting unsuccessfully a few times before. I'm making sure it sticks this time. At this point, I have no cravings for it ever, which I thought would never happen. I watched my dad die of lung cancer on Christmas morning, and I found my mom dead 3 years later, from congestive heart failure. My dad didn't make it to 70, my mom only made it to 71. I used every excuse in the book as a reason I didn't quit smoking, stress from taking care of two very ill parents, stress from work, stress from school, I use it as a way of socializing, etc. I got tired of lying to myself. The nail in the coffin for me was the fact that my poor cats smelled like cigarettes. I love them too much to fuck up their little lungs.
But, I fully support a person's right to smoke. I think the smoking bans at bars and such are complete bullshit. The only people I talk to about quitting are my patients, because that is part of my job, and if a friend wants help quitting.

Smoking is a form of population control, unfortunately it is a humane one therefore it is killing people too slowly....
There should be a place for smokers......like a camp....and the ones who really like to smoke they can go in the smoke chamber.....

My sentiments exactly. I haven't smoked in over 2 years but I'm not going to be an ass about it to smokers. I absolutely hate when people complain to smokers who are smoking OUTSIDE that their smoke is bothersome. As Mr. George Louis Costanza demonstrated so perfectly; it's an addiction!

I started because of boredom. I smoke now socially, and after I drink. A smoke after sex is also a wonderful time.

I still get bored and smoke too. I suppose when I'm stressed I go for a walk and enjoy a good ol' cig as well.

I had someone come up to me and say that I shouln't, that their father had died from lung cancer. I tol her I only smoked occasionally. She then said, 'oh, that's fine then'. I don't get it, but apparently she understands how wonderful an occasional smoke can be.

I also love the smell of a slight hint of menhal tobacco mixed with a ladies perfume. Love it.

I find it wonderful how things that should be cliches, like smoking after sex, smoking while drunk, smoking while stressed, is amazing, etc, are actually totally true in real life, it's one of those wonderful real life classic things you hear about in pop culture etc that actually pans out.

So I can be a social outcast and hear the Dice Clay voice in my head say "Look at her she's smoKING!" when asses walk by and give me a look as if I am instantly giving them lung cancer. Also I gotta agree with Ronnie B. sure everyone's glad they booted the smokers outside but really what's next...they just keep taking and taking...can't order a Big Mac without the fat content screaming at you...you can't fart because a glacier will fall off the flipping Artic shelf...what the hell.

Sorry, gotta go outside and burn one I am a little overstressed. :smoke::smoke::smoke:

I do love my kids so I don't smoke in the house or in the car with them but screw everyone else...I don't know them so I don't care if I smoke in the air they share with me outside...for all I know that overjudgemental person may not be a smoker but they may actually be a mother raper.

I costs 7 bucks a pack.
It makes you a social outcast.

Not to mention;
Heart disease
Respiratory problems.
Stained teeth and receding gum lines.
That oh, so pleasant "hack"
etc.

So?
Why do you still do it?

Seven bucks a pack????

It costs $3 down here.

Another reason why Delaware is better than everyone....I'm going to have to add that to the thread.

7 a pack? send up a box of cartons for me. beats the $12.75 I pay in Canada

I am not a social outcast. And plus, we can still smoke in the indian casinos. reason enough to keep it up to be cool in social situations

My hearts just fine. So is my respiratory system. its top notch

Then brush your fuckin teeth. and the more gums, the harder it is to chew through the beaver and moose meat

And I hack when I smoke drugs too and how can you not light up a fag after a few bowls.

You sound mental. Smoking is one of the best ways to pass time, and interact. Smokers are always willing to help other smokers if you run out of smokes, and I'm proud to be a part of the smoking community.

I love smoking. Been doing that for 31years, not to mention 10-15 joints a day. So according to all the stats i should be dead by now.
-cologne helps w/ stinky clothes
-brushing helps with smokers breath
-smokers tooth polish fer the teeth
-I have remianed physically active all these years, my heart is good, lungs are fine
-Sex life is great
-My general well being is good
-No debt, own home, vehicles etc..

Life can be good for a smoker too.

In all honesty, I'm 23 started smoking at 14, and I've tried to quit literally too many times to count, I would estimate somewhere around a dozen or more, and I can say the most successful time was for a lady that I loved, who wanted me to quit, and I drunkenly proclaimed to her that I could do it with no problem, for her. And it lasted a little while, but when that relationship fell apart so did my quitting. And I've never been nearly as close to a successful try at quitting since, and that was at least four years ago. So shit, who knows what works for each person. I used to pledge when I had a kid I would quit, like my parents did, but now me and my chick both don't want kids, so I guess I'm fucked there. I need some new inspiration, probably health related.

Quitting was easy when I went to Navy boot camp. They ran you so ragged the first few days, smoking was the last thing on my mind. That, and the closest I came to even seeing a cigarette was the outline of the pack in the company commander's sock. I went seven weeks without smoking and only rarely craved them when I drank coffee.

My first day out, people smoking looked so odd to me. The problem was, I wanted to smoke, because I COULD. I smoked a whole pack on my first day. I regret that decision to this day.

I quit smoking 10 and a half days ago, after smoking for about 10 years.
It sucks, but not so bad. I only really wanna smoke about 5 times a day. I'm doing the patches thing, which was cool at first when they were strong. Now they're all week, and it's getting a little tougher.

If you wanna quit, just get a bunch of bottled water and gum and stuff. Throw on a nicotine patch and tough it out.

I can't stand when people do that. Living in the land of "People Who Can't Mind Their Own Business" (Florida.) I get that all the time or I will get a person who will tell me a whole story about some family member they have that has cancer due to smoking. When I really could care less because I don't know these people.

When people say that to me I usually use a line I heard when I was a kid, it usually goes like this:

Jackass: Hey you know cigarettes are bad for you.

Me: Well my grandfather lived to be 105.

Jackass: Did he smoke?

Me: No. He minded his own fucking business.

I quit with very little effort, but that's mostly because I didn't really like or need the cigarettes. It was more of a breakup thing than it was an addiction thing ... although it helped to smoke around my college b.f. and his parents ... freaking chain-smoking chimneys!

I don't like the smell of smoke on anybody and really can't stand the smell of cologne combined with smoke, especially in an enclosed space. So I avoid elevators whenever possible ... between the anxiety I feel in the elevator and the stench of smoke/cologne, I get really cranky. Also, I've had asthma attacks from sitting on the train with someone whose clothes reeked of smoke/perfume/AquaNet and b.o., but I haven't made a big deal about it since the last time I took the train and sat in a car/space where that person entered. (Ew, by the way.)

Now, the only person I really consistently harass about smoking is my younger sister, but that's only because she's my sister.

Beating yourself up about it doesn't help.

Can you get some Nicorette or something to help with the nicotine addiction part? (Walgreens makes its own store brand, BTW, and it's cheaper. Don't know how it tastes or anything, but it's cheaper than Nicorette.)

Also, do you hang out with a lot of people who still smoke? It helps to spend more of your time with non-smokers ... of course, if that'll leave you without any friends, forget I said anything.

Hanging out with smokers isn't a problem. Pretty much no one I know here smokes except a few people at work that I don't see outside of the office. That's who I've bummed from recently.

However my little sister smokes too but she lives in NH and I only see her a few times a year. That's the only time I really want one. I've just been stressed lately and for some reason think a smoke will help. It doesn't. I usually feel worse.

I think I'll be OK. I can stick to it when I really need to and I'm at the point where I hate the taste and smell again. No more for me! Today was the last day.

It's the morning of my third day without one. Those damn NY Quits commercials really got to me--one of them in particular--and every one I smoked after I saw that one felt like poison to me. After smoking for years, I finally could say that I hated them enough to not miss them when they're gone. My last pack lasted more than three days. Sure, I get withdrawals, but I don't care. I want to dance at my daughter's wedding one day.

I feel really awful for my best friend. Her mom was just diagnosed with lung cancer. They aren't sure what stage she's in yet. The saddest part is that both of her parents gave up smoking over 20 years ago!
