PROBLEM: I need a way to get to JFK from Central NJ easily and inexpensively.

DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY: Leaving Christmas night.

These are the ideas I have so far:

1) Drive my own car up there and park. Problem: Parking is at least 200 dollars for the time I'm going to be away.

2) Rent a car down here, drive and drop off at JFK. About 70 dollars each way, so 140 total.

Any other ideas?

have someone from your family drive you? what time is the flight?

your other option is the train into NYC and then take a cab from there

The hotels around JFK offer discount, long-term parking. And a free shuttle bus to and from the terminal.
I've done it twice.

No good. We are planning to visit Liz's grandparents on the way up to the airport.

what time is the flight?

7ish, so arrival is going to be around 4:30.

How much discount? The best rate I saw so far is 15/day.

You could just drive to Queens and park in front of my house and then either take the Q10 bus to JFK (about 40 minutes for $2.00) or a taxi (about $25-30).

You consider going to JFK "life-changing"?

Hey, easy there. I live in Queens in all of it's beautiful glory, complete with car alarms going off at all hours and LIRR trains running by my house every 10-15 minutes (2-3 minutes during rush hour).

I concur with this idea...it is your best one.

It's all good...

Big fan of Queens. My brother and sister in law live there, as well as a chick I've been dating...and the wonderful drummer from the once much celebrated Crankcase, MikeyD also lives there.

Love the Queens.

I'm starvin'. We got any McDowell's?

The best idea I can come up with for Tenbats on this issue of getting to JFK would be getting a ZIP car or similar car rental and just drive yourselves. You can drive at your own pace and on Christmas day the traffic won't be bad at all. You should fly from NJ to Queens...No prob.

I have experience with the Zip cars...and they are a great deal.

jeeze, what's this world coming to when someone from jersey can feel strong enough to comment on NYC ... although, southestern queens is a sh*thole

as for the logistical issue at hand: could you have someone drive you to the family member's house, take a cab to the airport and then have someone pick you up at the airport

How do you return the Zip car? That's the problem, this is kind of a one-way deal.

I think I'm going to rent... I got it figured out that I'll rent one-way. The only problem is, it's cheap to rent one-way when you're dropping off at an airport - not so much when you're picking up at the airport and dropping off-site.

So what I'm going to do is pick up at JFK, drive home, and then return to Newark for the drop off the next day.

It's really convoluted, but unless I can find a better price on a car service, it's probably going to be the route I take.

My advice to you would be to check out the Zip car website. They have all the info and they can answer pretty much any question.

Getting TO JFK is no longer the problem, it's just getting back.

JFK is OUT THERE compared to where my available family is. It's the farthest of the four major airports in the area. Plus my brother is lazy.

Zip wants a 25 application fee and a 50 annual fee up front... that's more than the cost of the rentals I'm looking at one-way.

Thanks for the suggestion of Zip, but I don't think it'll work in this situation.

I use Zipcar all the time, and I don't think you can return it anywhere else but the location that you took it from. That's the whole point. Zipcar doesn't do business at the airports, either.

Actually, I'm not completely sure about that. I THINK they don't.

I live near JFK so I always fly out of there.

The best place to park (if you plan on driving) is
http://www.avistarparking.com/JFK.aspx

you go there, leave your car, and they drive you to the airport (2 mi or so away); when you return they pick you up.
coupons online; don't know how long you will be away.

I've used Avistar, but the best rate I've seen is about 15 bucks. We're going to be gone for about 10 nights, so once you figure in taxes and stuff, it's almost 200 bucks.

I actually figured it out: I'm going to rent a car one-way to drop off there, and have my brother pick me up on the return. I didn't think he'd do it but he said OK, which shocked me.

well and of course having two cheap and easys at the same time

I'd imagine the cheapest would be NJ Transit to Penn Station, LIRR from Penn to Jamaica, AirTrain to JFK. Airtrain drops you right at your terminal and is only $5.
The train from Penn to JFK might even be the quickest way, too. (Although on Christmas car traffic would be light.)

I kinda gathered it from the comments, but I figured I'd chime in anyway.

Airport parking is one thing that generally stinks- and La Guardia is worst of all.
As I said, I live very close, so I can usually swing something not awful.

good luck with that.

I normally wouldn't fly out of JFK, but I want to try Jetblue.

If that experience is good, I may try Virgin America next.
