I don't know how Alan Ball (True Blood, American Beauty, Six Feet Under) got Towelhead financed but I give him credit for what must have been a difficult task.
Towelhead is a sensitive , humanistic drama that also actively courts controversy while being about subject matters no one wants to deal with.
Towelhead is about the sexual awakening of a 13 year old Lebanese girl in Texas during the Gulf War II. It deals very frankly with Mid East-American relations and pedophilia.
It should be interesting to see to what degree American audiences shun this movie.

I've seen it listed on IMDB under the alternative title, "Nothing is Private" so maybe that's the name they are going to release it under.

That sounds great. I hope it gets made.
I'll have to pick up the book.
Thanks for the recommendation.

I saw a trailer for this over a year ago. I haven't read the book, but I think eventually will when I finish up some other stuff I'm working on.
It actually premiered at the Toronto Film Festival a year ago almost to the day, and it was shown under the name "Nothing is Private". I assume the name change came in order to give it a better chance for a decent release in America, because idiots who don't have any idea what it's about would probably make a big stink about the title.
Film looks good, though. Looking forward to eventually checking it out.

I've seen it.....the title is now officially Towelhead....and I believe it's release pattern begins this week.
Aaron Eckhart(The Dark Knight), Toni Colette (the Sixth Sense) and Maria Bello (The History of Violence) are featured in the ensemble cast.

Excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I think Toni Colette is one of the best actors out there. One of her best movies, Japan Story, was big in Australia and picked up a couple of Aussie-equivalent Oscars. It didn't play in the US for very long. Definitely worth renting on netflix.

I'm not the world's biggest Alan Ball fan. "American Beauty" is on my short list of Worst Best Picture Winners Ever, mostly because it seemed to think the rather obvious, jejune points it made about "Suburbia" were new and fresh. (Plus, the character of the Marine guy just killed it for me -- when the very first thing that a character says is a homophobic slur, the fact that he's a closeted gay dude is hardly a "shock twist".) "Six Feet Under" started out interesting, but dissolved into just nutty melodrama, as the show seemed to be going out of its way to torture these characters. And "True Blood" had an interesting first episode, but I can see him really starting to hammer at the vampires as a metaphor for interracial relationships, or homosexuality, or whatever.
He can't get out of the way of his own stories. He has "points to make", and he'll make damn sure you get them.
And a lot of the negative reviews I'm seeing of this movie (and it's 52% on Rotten Tomatoes right now) seem to indicate that's happening with this one too.
I'll check it out on DVD. I doubt I'll go out of my way to see it at the theatre, though.

The film is meant to be divisive and was made with the understanding that many people are not interested in facing or dealing with these issues. It definitely hammers at the issues but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The one certain thing is that there are not a lot of films like this being made.

I'm REALLY looking forward to this movie. Of course, I'm cheap so I'll wait til it's on DVD and rent it from Netflix.
Really good book.
I have ordered the book, given Mojo's thumbs up.
