Anyone know of any reliable shops around here that they can recommend? Looking for someone who wont rip me off (too badly)?

Looking to find someone who installs transmissions. I am going to order my own from a guy but need a good mechanic who can put it in for me.

You guys have any personal recommendations for any shops that they trust? I dont want to go to a random Midas and have them destroy it more than it would have been if I left it alone.

If you have an AAMCO around I would recommend that. They are transmission people.

Other than that I would try several shops and talk/ try to find out what they charge. Shops usually go different rates very often. Also when you are looking for shops make sure the shop you go to has a lot of business (and i dont mean just beater cars sitting around the place)

hope this helps.

Depending on where in NJ you are, Staten Island isn't far. There's a great transmission shop called Amboy Transmission 4299 Amboy Rd Staten Island, NY 10312 (718) 967-0170‎.

My dad has a repair shop close by (he repairs everything but transmissions) and deals with them often. They're honest and do great work. The rebuilt my transmission 2 years ago.

My mother used to swear by Greg & Sons in Wayne when she lived in Little Falls.

They are apparently very good, reliable and reasonably priced.

Here's their info from Yahoo! Yellow Pages:

What's the name of his shop so I can say who referred me when I call? Or PM me if you dont want to be posting that sort of stuff around.

No complaints about you bringing your own transmission to have them install it? I figure that some will just do garbage work since they are not making the sale on the components and wont need to support it so they wont give a crap if they do a good job.

That was going to be my question/comment, you may find someone to install it but you may have a problem getting them to stand behind it in any meaningful way. If it's rebuilt, you may have some recourse with the rebuilder down the line - or is it a pull from a yard?
