that's funny, i have a new york punk cd compilation titled blank generation. it features the darts, television, deville, suicide, the mumps, and county. blondie, patti smith, and the ramones are in the comp too. i'm seventeen right now but i wish i could have experienced punk rock in the early/late '70s...back when punk rock was really punk rock and not "punk crock," which can be easily found on mtv right now.
anyways, about punk clubs...i volunteer at abc no rio and it's safe to say that no rio is one of the most legendary spaces on the lower east side. and for anyone who really wants to experience real hardcore and loud punk rock, they shoud head down to a saturday hardcore matinee at abc no rio.

I'm from Wisconsin and it's pretty safe to say I didn't get much exposure to the punk scene growing up there. However my fianc‚ defined his formative years with punk music. He remembers the Continental Divide, the Bond Street Cafe. He's introduced me to the music... he's definitely more straightedge punk. I prefer the early stuff, like early Ramones. However, he's also introduced me to a band called the Lunachiks. Anybody out there remember them?

The Blowhard
04-25-2001, 03:37 PM
I remember the Lunachicks.
I never saw them, but they played in clubs around the NYC area.It was such a great time, the East Village had some cool record shops and people would just be hanging out around St. Marks Place.
There was a cool shop called "Manic Panic", where I used to buy import 45's and cool T-Shirts. You never know who you might see in that neighborhood. Lou Reed, Joey Ramone, David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, David Byrne and many others. I never liked the Mudd Club..too trendy, but at CBGB's I always hung out near the pool table. Last time I was there I saw Living Color. It has been a while. What a great time in NYC!

the lunachicks are still together. they may not be playing but they are still a band. they're really incredible when they play live. they've been on the warped tour twice (i don't know why) and the vocalist is an actress/model. i know they've also played with the ramones.

I left Patti Smith out in an earler post. She always put on a great show. Other faves:
Velvet Underground, John Cale(solo), Student Teachers, Bloodless Pharohs, Robert Gordon.

heckler, have you ever been to wowsville? it's a record shop in the city, it will probably remind you of manic panic. they have a lot of great stuff. you should check it out.

I'm a big fan of all those bands Heckler , but I'm not nearly old enough to check them out live.

Heckler you should check out Idlewild, Cat Power, and the doves. All of them are fairly new , but have elements of the music in that era in their Style.

I miss the little record stores. Now I get my music from former record company co-workers that are still in the industry, as pompous as that sounds:)
But I do buy CD's...I picked up a new copy of The Dead Boy's "Young, Loud and Snotty". What an album!

I really wish that I could have had more exposure to punk when I was growing up. Where I come from, if you didn't listen to country, you were the oddball... I think their heads might have exploded had they heard punk. :)

I once heard somebody describe punk as the bathroom at CBGB's. What a great analogy.

cat power fairly new? chan marshall (cat power) has been recording music since 1993 i believe, and she's recorded six albums. calling her "fairly new" would be like an insult to a musician such as her. i've seen her play live twice...one can never get enough of her music. well, at least i can't.

Some of the best punk clubs in NYC were the most obscure. Like the Lizmar Lounge, Downtown Beirut, Tin Pan Alley, Lucky 13. The only way you heard about shows was through word of mouth. I remember being at a Nausea, Damage, and Hammerbrain show at Lucky 13 around 1987-88, and Debbie Harry showed up. No one was impressed and she left in anger.

Coney Island High was definitely one of the better latter day places to see punk rock. Regrettably, they closed down in 1999. The Burger King rumor was just that, a rumor as the building is still for rent.

The Blowhard

I use to go to "The Reggae Lounge" near Houston Street.
What a great place! There was also a dive up the block from CBGB called Studio 57. Or was it Club 57? It was a strange place, punks, yippiea and all kinds of people hanging out.
Hurrah was cool, so was RT Fireflys.

My friend was in a band and they played at Club 57. I remember sitting upstairs on a couch looking down and some chick passed me a pipe with opium. I also remember going to the toilet and being told not to flush...something about water conservation. I'm sure there were a few "Den Mothers" in that place!

I had a love/hate relationship with that place.
Great assortment, rip off prices. I remember buying the Ramones "It's Alive"(British Import) there and I later saw it at Sounds(another great store) for 15 dollars less.
I could spend hours browsing at Bob's, he was suck a crook.
He even bought records, always low balling dumb kids.

I went to the Joey Ramone tribute show at CBGBs, what a trip to see 40 year old punks rush the stage, really great show.

In CT we have a relativly nice little club called the Webster Underground which is a decent spot, but i think my memories of good shows supercede the quality of the club.

Also, in Boston, there's a club called Axis that does Punk shows on the weekends and Alternative lifestyle nights during the week. Very nice setup though. Big bar.

Lastly, my personal favorite, Valentine's in Albany, it's got a bar downstairs and a very cozy theater upstairs. I have no idea how many people are supposed to fit into it but it always seems overcrowded, which is always good. I saw AFI there not so long ago and it still ranks as the number 1 performance I have seen out of a punk band. I think a lot of that comes from the no barriers, small stage vibe.

Good God I ramble. A lot.

In 1982(?)I had made kind of a pilgrimage to the Rathskellar in Boston. That was supposedly was the"place to be" back then. All I saw that night was the owner who was that bar's version of Hilly of CBGB'S.It was a weeknight though.I also stumbled into a place near Fenway where the Go Go's were playing.Because of the "stillness" of the area,I was able to just follow the "beat"...Yeah!,we got it!

Belinda was such a dirty girl back then!
