McCain says that Obama says missile defense must be proven but when Reagan started SDI it wasn't. Are we not supposed to expect progress 20 years later?
Conclusion: This debate will not move the polls.
Maybe a +1 to McCain, because I think he used some code words that may scare a few people, but overall, I'd say in terms of the polls it'll be a draw.
Personally, I think Obama won on every issue but Iraq.
Overall, if McCain doesn't see a significant bounce, he's in trouble. He'll most certainly lose the economic debate.
He needed to show Obama as a complete lunatic on foreign policy, and he didn't do that.

Which is exactly what Obama said.
So McCain totally fucking lied.
What Kissinger said:
KISSINGER: Well, I am in favor of negotiating with Iran. And one utility of negotiation is to put before Iran our vision of a Middle East, of a stable Middle East, and our notion on nuclear proliferation at a high enough level so that they have to study it. And, therefore, I actually have preferred doing it at the secretary of state level so that we -- we know we're dealing with authentic...
(CROSSTALK)
SESNO: Put at a very high level right out of the box?
KISSINGER: Initially, yes. And I always believed that the best way to begin a negotiation is to tell the other side exactly what you have in mind and what you are -- what the outcome is that you're trying to achieve so that they have something that they can react to.
Now, the permanent members of the Security Council, plus Japan and Germany, have all said nuclear weapons in Iran are unacceptable. They've never explained what they mean by this. So if we go into a negotiation, we ought to have a clear understanding of what is it we're trying to prevent. What is it going to do if we can't achieve what we're talking about?
But I do not believe that we can make conditions for the opening of negotiations. We ought, however, to be very clear about the content of negotiations and work it out with other countries and with our own government.
There's the full quote. McCain expressly said not the head of state level and acknowledged the sub-levels.

But the thing was that he was trying to make it appear that Obama would go crawling to Iran and other countries to talk, when, in actuality, when you look at Obama's actual position, it's not really that different from what Kissinger said. In fact, it's pretty much the same.

Not you, of course. Just sayin'
The topic was foreign policy, and Obama both held his own and looked Presidential - McCain made Bob Dole look spry and hep. He was twitchy, and negative and continued to lie and lie and lie.
I actually feel better when I hear about the times they agree with one-another - the gauntlet that has been thrown out there is to change the way politics are done, and McCain seemed out of touch in his distain and continued disrespect for the Democratic nominee. Obama is ready to lead right this second.

For the record, I'll sum up what I thought about this on three different levels.
-For people like me, who follow this stuff closely, Obama won on most issues.
-In terms of how this debate will play with average people, I'd rank it a tie
-In terms of political momentum, it's a huge win for Obama. This was suppose to be McCain's night. McCain should have killed Obama on foreign policy. It's the crux of his candidacy. The fact that he didn't, is a HUGE momentum changer in this campaign.
And from the sounds of things, I'm actually being generous to McCain. Every network has scored it for Obama decisively, including the Instapolls.
Even Fox is kind of downplaying McCain a bit. That's shocking.

I usually find myself at odds with the majority on these things but here's my take:
If the atavistic, chest-beating tactics hold sway (like in 2004) then McCain won. If people have learned anything during the last eight years then they may not fall for it again.
McCain was forceful, but full of shit, on most of his points.
I think that Obama held his own on the substance of the arguments but I do wish that on that last shot by McCain that he didn't have the experience or judgement to be President that Obama had jumped a little uglier with him & shoved it back in McCain's face with a litany of instances where McCain is wrong.

Obama only wins because most here support him. I didnt get to watch it all but it sounds like mccain didnt speak very well but his plans to me make more sense, cutting back on government funding is essential and I cant understand why anyone wouldnt bash obama for thinking earmarking funds are a good thing, also giving people tax breaks wont help them very much but giving medium to large businesses breaks would help create jobs.
Most people go into a debate with a predetermined idea of who won before the introductions, I dont think either one would do what they said if elected but I would like less spending and a lot of government funding cuts to crap programs.

I also like cnn's electoral college map, they still have georgia as leaning mccain when obama has already pulled most of the people out of here because they know they have lost the state. Obama isnt going to win the south and most likely that includes florida even with heavy dem influence around miami, shit he will most likely lose ohio and indiana as well.
Everyone speaking up is so sure obama is going to win but I still just dont see it happening and have resigned myself to at least 4 years of mccain, but then again I dont see much difference if obama wins either. I hate all these elections, they never really tell people where they stand, obama says hes about change then goes a picks a career politician as a running mate, then mccain is a maverick but picks an obvious attention getter for his running mate when Romney was the obvious choice.
This election sucks and I dont think I will be happy whomever wins.

I couldn't agree more. While I did not attend any past McCain events, I surely liked the old (funny twist here) McCain versus this new anything to please the base and get elected McCain. Part of me holds out hope that once elected he'll say fuck the base and do what he once believed was needed to right this country, but I seriously doubt it.
As someone stated earlier, either candidate would appear to be light years better than Bush. Still, that not a sure thing, no matter how bad Bush has been. I can only hope the candidate that's best for the country as a whole gets in, and right now based on my knowledge it's Obama.

Generally speaking the debates don't move the polls more than 3 points so they aren't a gigantic deal. What do though is to add to the narrative that the campaigns are telling.

My initial reactions to the debate: Blah.
Obviously I thought on the issues, that Obama was right...but it was a relatively non-eventful debate. McCain was really dismissive, almost arrogant towards Obama which I personally found very off-putting...but I'm not McCain's target audience.
Obama did hold up with McCain on foreign policy, which was perceived as his greatest weakness. But we won't remember this as one of the "great debates" in American history.

Insighful comments by EPO as always
I did not get to see the debate, but have been listening to the roundtables on POTUS and the reviews in WSJ and NY Times... seems like your comments are dead on.
As one commentator on POTUS said this morning if you were votong for McCain before the debate you'll vote for him after....and if you were voting for Obama before then you'll be for Obama after.
Not a game changer... an author I respect declared Jim Lehrer the winner...which makes me think I'll have to watch it on DVR today.b

is it just me or does it look like an orderly helping an old man at a retirement home?
GOOD CALL! That's what McCain looked like all night. He wouldn't even look at Obama. Such a douchebag.

Hofstra is in long island. Take them to FH Rileys in the heart of huntington village (400 New York Ave). I think they would have fun hanging out with brother Elmo
