We are living in a world where we have reached a truce with the bacteria around us, and in fact, totally rely on some bacteria to live. Without certain bacteria in our intestines, we'd be diarrhea machines, spewing fecal matter from our asses like an enraged lawn sprinkler. So there do seem to be "good" bacteria (like lactobacillus, the delightful bacteria that keeps vaginas fresh) and "bad" bacteria (like clostridium dificile, the agent that causes antibiotic-related pseudomembranous colitis).

Probiotics are bacteria that supposedly help our bodies do their thing. There are these people in the caucasus mountains somewhere who eat yak yogurt or something every day and live to be 120 years old despite smoking and drinking vodka...this group of people was partly responsible for the uptick in interest in probiotics (even if they are a myth, which I can't confirm or deny at this time, but I'm looking into it).

I did a literature search on probiotics and most of the results are quite positive; probiotics help but don't totally prevent infant diarrheal illnesses in 3rd world countries, probiotics improve mental function in people with bad liver disease, stuff like that. There are also a few cautionary studies that are leaning toward probiotics causing some problems (like blood infections) but those are in the vast minority.

There are all kinds of probiotic yogurts out there. Most of the research looks like this:

CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated a nonsignificant trend for reduction of the incidence of diarrhea among healthy young adults consuming yogurt containing Lactobacillus casei . Further study is needed to evaluate the role of probiotics in adults. Am J Infect Control. 2005 Mar;33(2):122-5.

So none of the studie show that probiotics have any kind of stunning effect on health; rather a mild, but positive effect.

Thanks Doc. I started taking them and I have to admit that I'm a lot more regular these days with the bowel movements. It might be all in my head, but at least it's working.
