Aikido is the bastard child of martial arts I'd say. 50% of any jiu-jitsu post on youtube is there to mock it... it's a whole thing that's kind of ... hard to say. What's that type of philosophical problem where an entire argument has no merit in philosophy because you're starting at the point of total bullshit and then chasing your tail....? That.
Mind-body harmony in the face of any given situation for the purposes of "right action" during stress, conflict or other discord. Aikido's purpose is to bring harmony to these situations through the practitioner's familiarity with the four principles: relax progressively, maintain awareness of your center, proper posture and positive mind... the creator was very into Japanese Jiu-jitsu, judo and very spiritual.
Anyhoo- I'm glad you asked b/c it helps me think about it a little - as to what it means to me. That's it really. I've used my training to stay out of bullshit more than anything but as you progress and hone your technique... there's an incredible sense of physical ability that comes with it. Some higher level guys/women are very impressive.
There are a lot of very shitty youtube vids out on aikido... but this guy really impresses the shit out of me. And he's in Nice France - if I had a lot of cash and was looking to kill time ... fuck it - it'd be the Riviera and studying with this guy for awhile. (disclaimer: aikido demos are not fighting - they display the interplay of body mechanics, personal control and universal forces i.e. gravity, kinetics... etc. It is also for ghey ass pussies- there I saved you time... take your fucking jiu-jitsu and muay thai ranting somewhere else or so...thank you)
