I had a shick quattro (the one that "buzzed") but my wife threw it out after I ran out of blades. I just tried a throw-away gillette, that was in my travel kit and I cut my face to shreds.
Which one do you guys recommend?

When I used to shave, I used a Mach3.
But in all seriousness, fuck shaving. Grow a beard. It's fantastic.

I use the mach3. With a nice fresh blade the shave is so good. Unfortunately the blades are so expensive that I end up using them much longer than I should and end up with a painful experience.

Everytime I see one of those I think about when god damned Breuer interuppted a live read for the Razor Rollerboard scooter on O&A.
Well fancy that, here it is:

For me, nothing will replace my Self Cleaning electric:

I've gotten far too lazy over the years to be bothered with disposables.

I shave with one of these:

They take some getting used to, but they're really good if you have sensitive skin. Plus, you can get blades dirt cheap online.

WOW.
You use a real "safety razor" ?
I've only seen those in the movies ... like when Jack Lemmon takes the blade out of his in the bathroom cabinet before Shirley McLaine wakes up in The Apartment ...

I have accumulated 4 different handles. Whenever the starter kit is available on sale.
That way I can buy whichever blade I have a coupon for. Blades are expensive as hell anymore.

I also use a brush to apply shaving cream. I'm a fancy man.
I have really sensitive skin that's prone to razor burn, ingrown hairs, and razor bumps, and I experimented with just about every shaving product throughout my college years. The safety razor was my last resort, and it's easily been the most effective fix.

The electric Shick Quatro is the best razor that Shick makes, but my favorite by far is the Gillette Fusion Phenom seems to give me the closest smothest shave of all. As far as electric razors go, Amy bought me a Norelco like the one pictured below. It's amazing and shaves very closely. It's one of my favorte razors ever. Plus I love the case, it reminds me of Spock's coffin.

this is EXACTLY what I do, and then when I finally change it I get the best shave. A lot of times I forget to change it until I am in the shower and then it is to late, so another day goes by with the dull razor.

That particular one is the Merkur 1904, and it's the one I use. However, Merkur makes a bunch of other razors of various handle lengths, adjustable blades, and whatnot. From what I understand Merkur is generally considered the best manufacturer of safety razors, and there's a surprisingly large amount literature online you can check out if you do some Googling.

I think that's the issue here... as Tub stated - they're really expensive. I started going back to the huge bag of disposables from warehouse stores b/c it's more cost effective and just using the Mach 3 for weddings, funerals and court appearances.
But I'm a bit of an eco person - so that's a wasteful ... and if these things help sensitive skin - I'm all for it. Last night I told my skin that I've seen better on a pack of franks. j/k of course, and it got all silent and burned. Wouldn't speak to me till just a little while ago this morning.

I think that anything recently displayed on film as a murder weapon might be a bit ... unsettling.
Besides, if you really want a straight-razor shave, you can pay someone to do it ... there was this cutesy little piece in the Fashion & Style section of the NY Times a while back about a barbershop that does hot towels and shaving cream and straight razors:
Less a Spa But More Than a Barbershop (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/25/fashion/25skin2.html?scp=2&sq=barber%20shop%20+%20straight%20razor&st=cse) (NY Times, 25 October 2007; Fashion & Style section) [OK, so what if it's in Boston ... there HAVE to be other places that have something similar!!!]
Its companion piece, Pushing Five O'Clock Shadow Back a Few Hours (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/25/fashion/25Skin.html?ref=fashion) (Fashion & Style, 10/25/2007; NY Times), discussed new lotions, potions and shaving creams designed to retard hair growth and how men are using them to slow their beards down.

There used to be an electric shaver called THE MIAMI DEVICE and it was designed to leave an 1/8th inch of stubble so you can get yo Don Johnson on.
Shitty product.
Awesome name though.

steam/cogen operation... but you'd have to find a lax plant where management doesn't care - some places are actually run very professionally. I've never encountered that problem.

I've actually seen ads for a sharpener for razor blades that they claim will sharpen even multi-blade cartridges like the Mach 3. Here's the website, complete with video of very cheesy commercial:
https://www.officialtvwebsite.com/saveablade/index.asp?did=644&refcode=sab1a
It's $19.95, which isn't much more than a pack of refills for a Mach 3. I'll probably wait to see if it shows up in the "As seen on TV" rack at Target or Wal-Mart or some place like that rather than ordering it direct, but it might be worth a shot.

It's amazing. There really is nothing like going to the barber and getting some warm shave cream on and a shave from a straight razor. I myself am a little nervous about doing to myself, but when I go to the barber I always try to have it done, it's great the shave is super smooth and my skin feels alive after it.

Yep, pretty much... Sometimes I'll go with a knockoff if it's on sale, cause it's just that much of a savings.
I got the straight razor treatment from the barber once. Pretty cool, but I'm too cheap to do that for myself on a regular basis.
