This has been a debate of me and my friend forever. He says it is insane not to know someones last name before going on a date with them. I am like I almost never know there last name. So who is right?

Your friend is right.
In fact, I bet he's always right.

Is this a real friend or is the voice in your head?

It really depends on your intentions.
If you are seeking a relationship then her last name is important.
If you are just going to put her in a shallow grave
then it's better to know as little about her as possible.

it does not matter. once you score open her wallet and look. Also take 40 bucks so she technically split dinner with you

Do these "dates" involve Craigslist and a certain number of "roses"?

Exactly! Why on earth would knowing someone's last name be a requirment for going out on a first date?
It's probably just a slave name anyway.

We went out one night and took a flashlight,
out with these two girls Colin knew from Kenwood Christian.
One was named Laurie, that's what the story
said next week in the Guardian.
Nope. No last name necessary.

And when I killed her it was so easy
that I wanted to kill her again.
I got down on both of my knees and...
She ain't coming back again.

I once knew someone who went out with a girl for a while and didn't even know her first name. All he knew was that it rhymed with a female body part. We were sitting around trying to figure out what it was and the best we could come up with was Mulva.

If it's meant to be, you'll find out her last name eventually.

Korean friend advertises herself by her last name as though it were her first name. I think she's a little mixed up or it's a Korean thing. If that's the case, every other Korean I met is not normal.
I usually learn their last name via indirect diffusion, because 99% of the time if I have to ask you your last name, I will forget it.

I know in the Japanese culture, the last name (family name) goes in front of the given name, which is why Ichiro has "Ichiro" on his jersey and not "Suzuki" (his name in Japanese is Suzuki Ichiro)...I think its the same for the Chinese too, because Yao Ming also has "Yao" on his jersey and not "Ming", so it could be a thing in Korean culture as well
As for the question at large, it really depends on where I met them. If its some chick off the internet, I try to do it for my own safety, but asking for it directly just seems creepy. I usually try to either notice it (sometimes its in their myspace page or IM name or email address...thank goodness facebook uses real names) or pick it up some other way. But its not a whole big to do if I don't know it
