I recently decided to relearn to play the guitar. I haven't touched it in over a decade and want to start from scratch. I have an acoustic guitar here and I was wondering if anyone knew any good online resources for learning guitar, preferably one for people who don't know how to play, since I barely remember chords as it is.

Hey Jon,

I'm a member/contributor of Vanderbilly.com. It's a free site with audo/video tutorials. Most lessons are geared toward the intermediate player, but there are a few beginner lessons as well. You may have to do some searching around to find them though. I'll look around tonight and see if I can find anything else.

PS. If there's anything specific you are looking for i.e. open chords, scales etc...let me know and I would be happy to do a lesson for you.

Thanks, I'll definitely have to check that site out. I'm not a complete beginner but I'm so damn rusty I want to start over.

funny. hahahaha.

and the dragon comes in the nigggggghhhhhhh..!!

does this have something to do with homestar from the ending of the show (something tells me I'm one of few who don't know this.)

I have a really great blues resource that starts you very basic and you probably end up somewhere in the medium difficulty range...but it's a book - I can't say enough good things about it. Comes with a CD.

You better not come to band practice this Sunday with sloppy play like that. I expect you to practice sir.

These are good for learning a little theory.

This is a great site for TAB and basic lessons.

Just start with some basic strumming songs for now. And work on alternate picking up and down the scales while watching TV or something. Its like working out. You have to start slow and build up your fingers.

I use the line-6 Guitar port. Only $99 bucks and very easy to use. For an additional $7.99 per month they post tabbed audio lessons as well as full songs and backing tracks.

This seemed like a good thread to ask for some advice.

I keep picking up the guitar and starting to learn, then get frustrated by lack of progress and drop it again. I've done it like four or five times over the years.

I think it's that every beginner's course stresses learning chords at the beginning and just palying changes between those chords. I know that's important, but it would be cool to learn something at the beginning that sounded like a song. Sounded recognizable, instead of just G, C, D, C, G.

Has anyone else experienced this when they were starting out? Any suggestions to make me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something?

Oh, and Jon, About.com has a pretty extensive beginner's guitar site with lessons here (http://guitar.about.com/od/guitarlessons/u/lessons.htm#s3).

yes... x10.

My solution was to get an acoustic and start playing 3 or 4 chord songs that I liked. This really got me in the habit of working on my finger strength and strumming technique. But the fact that I liked the songs (and I sang over them... that's helpful too if you sing) really helped to motivate. Play out too! That's when I really got hooked... you should have some kind of an empty hole in your life that playing out fills to really get the full effect. Look at me look at me... love me. yecck!

Good luck!

But I'm not looking to pay someone for lessons, or I would consider it. It's just something I want to do in my free time. And that's something I haven't had since posting this...
