With the market going down, and the age old adage of "buy low, sell high", is this a good time to invest in the stock market? What kinds of stocks would you market savvy people recommend?

FUCK YES! Take all of your pennies kids, cash them in and go and buy American Express stock. I bought the IPO at around 40 and sold at around 60 within two months. It is now down to 25. When the market/economy bounces back, this stock will triple or quadrupile. It will be a three-five year committment but this is my pick if you have some extra money you can invest long term.

the short answer is yes

ibm is doing well but the buy low stratedgy doesnt apply because its selling high because its the only thing doing well

between the bad loans and debt crisis you may want to look at wellsfarg being that its the only one in no real danger whatsoever

look seriously at the commodities trades though
this is a great time to get invested in batteries with hybrids comming online

i dont know if they trade but nickle cadmium batteies(the standard recharble batteries) are the one in most cars with Lithium ion (the ones in laptops and other long term devices being what the cars willl eventually run on)
if they are actually traded those are gold holds in this ever greening economy

and if they arent then maybe the compaines that produce those batteries would be an option

Wait for Visa to drop to about 35 (IPO was 40). then you will kill on it.

Only buy if you have money that you know you won't need for a few years.

YES

That said I don't think we've seen the bottom yet.

My guess is, in less than 3 years the market will be back above 12000

wait for it to hit bottom
a sure sign of us having hit bottom will be when the reports of people killing their entire families get more time on the national news.

but by then you probably wont have money to invest.

MO and or PM. Both Philip Morris stocks, one domestic and the other international. Solid performer each year. Both pay a 5% dividend on top of solid growth. As someone else mentioned, if you have money you can sock away for the long haul these two are very attractive.
