I did my first home repair today. I had put an ad on craigslist to do odd jobs and someone contacted me to fix a toilet that was leaking at the base.

I've had experience with all sorts of shit from my previous employment on a college campus - including pulling toilets off the floor and replacing the seal. So I did it for them. Pretty cool ... I had my first experience with no one looking over my shoulder/no boss - just me and my wits.

I have to say though - once i was done... I was sweating and we had an apple picking date lined up and I don't feel that great today to begin with ... so I turned on the water and started testing the seal and prayed it didn't leak. It didn't!

I'm feeling pretty good about it overall.

I shouldn't say this is my first job- here I am at the waist rewiring the lighting in a local strip club.

No - sadly. Terrible because that's under "other services"

btw - I'm only 1/2 hour away - if you're ever really stuck and need a hand with something I may be able to help you out.

I'm also friends with a very good contractor in the area who'd be able to do things I can't.

I'll have my wife give you a call. j/k there's stuff around here that I just can't get to now with two kids and sports and diapers etc.. you can make a fine living just fixing things. what do you charge/hr?

On my fall/spring agenda is:
1> Install a fence around the pool because we have a baby now.
2> Finish front garden 1/2 done - 1/2 looks like shit
3> Finish, tape off, paint, closet that I almost finished in the spring
4> power wash house
5> power wash swing set
6> delete shitty back deck
7> install new back deck
the list goes on and on.

psshhht! beats me. haha. My plan is to just come to an intial agreement and do my best to finish the job.

I come cheap though. (extra for thong)

I figured I'd offer b/c...

a. I know some ppl don't know how to do shit
and
b. three weeks is a long time to wait on somehting important

Sounds like if the situation was dire you'd be able to take care of it though. Believe me - I'm getting acquainted to "no free time" with the 7 month old now myself.

I'll be doing that job at my parent's old house soon.

Congrats on the success. I hope it goes as easily for me. :flush:

Good job. I hate most anything to do with plumbing. Usually takes me three trips to the hardware store for even the small jobs.

how far are you from Easton and can you fix leaky plumbing and sweep a chimney?

My more experienced friend gave me good advice before starting:

bring two rings - #3 and #10 (10's bigger incase the flange is below the floor)

good luck!

i put extra shelves up in the shed today... sucked only having one drill cause you have to keep changing from drill bit to screw/bit. just needed some patience and it got done

question: i have a battery pack drill(craftsman 19.2 volt) had it about 7 years now. it seems the battery at full charge doesn't work as strong as it used to. do the batteries go bad? or is it more likely the drill itself? thanks

I'm learning this stuff all on the fly. I just primed and painted a room; I also changed out toilet seats and I'll be changing the locks soon.

Batteries and the clutch will go bad. I use self-tapping screws or drill all my holes first.

I'd get rid of it.
Pros will laugh at you behind your back for having a Craftsman.

I've never made the transition to batteries.
My Makita 1/2 -inch drill is still going strong 28 years after I bought it....
