I was listening to Mooch today as he was on bashing Lilly and he made me think about how old Lilly is and she is just barely getting a place of her own. I'm only a couple years older than her and I've been out of my parents house for almost 10 years now. I had to move out of town for college and never went back. How old were you when you left the rent-free life of living with the parents? I was just turning 19....and a poor student having to start paying rent.

I never did. I'm an only child, born to my parents when they were 40 and 41. I went to local colleges for my two degrees, and I paid for my own education, so living at home was cheaper for me. The office I worked in through college is also near my house (and is also the office I work at now). My dad got sick and died the semester before I was to graduate with my first degree, my mother died the semester before I obtained my second degree. Being an only child, I inherited the house.

i went away to college and then came back.... met a man... got engaged.... and we decided to live at home while saving for a house.

SO when i broke that off i moved out almost right away... I was 25 and i felt pretty old to be just moving out but I did have a basement apt at my dad's townhome so it wasn't like i lived in my childhood room or anything lol. and my ex was floored when he found out i had gotten an apt before he did... that was kind of fun. wheee

I graduated high school when I was 17, spent that summer at home while working. Started college and floated around a lot with about a half dozen places to stay. Moved to Florida at 19 and started learning lessons of renting apt, making payments, making a way to pay for all this, plus shit I wanted. Plus food beyond ramen shit, You learn a few harsh lessons along the way.

I have no real knowledge of Lilly, but I have always questioned the source of all the money she claims to have squandered at her young age while "working" as an intern.

I've lived at home pretty much due to varying concerns (except when I was in college (that I mostly paid for) or two years when I lived upstate) but since I was 18 I've kicked in for bills and food as much as I would living on my own.

25. Stayed with the folks after college, worked and saved as much money as I could. Bought a house right after I turned 25.....still 25 by the way.

19, joined the Army. By the time I was discharged, I was married and came home and lived with her parents for 2 months while we house shopped and moved in.

At the ripe old age of 22, my parents said to me, "You get 6 months rent free, then it's time for you to prove that you're self reliant." I've been out since then, with the exception of a 7 month span after being laid off.

At 17 went off to college and never returned.....even to the same state. And my parents are cool mother fuckers too, but I'd rather visit.

Went away to college at 17. After that it was usually just two weeks at Christmas and summers at home until grad school four years later. Then it was only about 10-12 days for Christmas.

Once you've tasted freedom, it's hard to go back. When I was home for college break it was so weird telling mom were I was going every time I went out (not that she expected it but I still told her).

My parents kicked me out when I was 6. It was going good until they asked where I got all of the Marlboro Miles from. I said, "None of your goddamn business, mom." But, just then, Father hit me with plumbing wrench. Again. They really wanted that sport bag.

At 24 while I was still in college. (I was on the 7 year plan) Dad had died 4 years earlier and Mom moved to FL with my sister, leaving me to fend for myself.

After college I lived at my parents' house for a few years. Then when I was 25 I wanted to get a place of my own and didn't want to rent so I bought the place I live in now... I'm 29 now.

Left for college when I was 18 and that was that.

From listening to the show you'd think it was the norm to live w/ Mommy and Daddy as long a possible. Glad to see I was wrong from most of your posts.

I moved out at 17, right before graduating college, in hopes of proving independence and try and get financial aid. Went away to school, and when I came back to NYC after 2 1/3 semesters, I never moved back in.

I've also kind of inherited my parents' house, albeit temporarily. My parents divorced when I was 15, and my dad moved out. My mom remarried when I was 20 and moved into my step-father's house, leaving the house with me, my sister, and my niece. My sister wound up getting married a few years ago, and ever since then--I'm 25 now--I've been living here alone and paying no rent. What can I say? I'm a bum. My mom doesn't want to sell the house yet because it's the best investment she has. Plus, the market is dogshit now anyway. Who knows when I'll end up with my own place.

17, senior year of high school, my mom got remarried and moved out of town so I got a place with one of my pals.
She would have stayed if I'd wanted her too, but I chose to find a place and get a running start at my eventual alcohol addiction.
Then moved back to my mom's after a couple legal problems(none of the charges stuck) for 6 months or so.
After that I stayed at a few different places for around 6 months at a time,
finally getting another apartment around age 20 and staying there until after college.
Although, a couple years ago I lived at my Mom's during the offseason while I was cleaning up hurricane shit for a job.
I paid half, or more, of the bills year round though.
I still felt like a loser, being 25/26 and living with mommy, regardless of who paid for what.
The thing is, now that I've lived by myself again for a few years, I somehow still manage to feel like a loser.

Go ahead.

Going on 19... My sister and I got an apartment together in Nutley, and my sister thinks she's my mother sometimes so it was a LOT like living at home, but a great situation financially and I became independent at a pretty young age. I bought my house last year and my first year of living all by myself has been great, though lonely at times, and I actually miss living with my sister... never thought I'd say that... but I'm loving being on my own.

Does dorming at college but then going to the parents' house for summers count? I went away to college at 19, but "officially" moved out (i.e. lost my bedroom) when I graduated. That was 10 years ago.

I moved out of my parents house when I was 17 because my Mom wouldn't let my girlfriend live with us.
I told her that if she couldn't live there, I would leave. She told me to go right ahead. I left and never went back.

Moved out when I was 23 and didn't want to move to Wisconsin, then tempoarily was back in the nest when I moved out to Wisconsin anyway 2 years later. I moved back out again and lived alone for 2 years before moving to Jersey to live with my now-husband.

I moved out when I was freshly 19.

I have moved a few times but moved back home for a total of 5 or 6 months in the last 6 years.

My brother, on the other hand, has lived out of the house for a total of about 6 months. He's back at home now.
He's 33.

I was 16 and some change. I was saving up money from the age of 12 so I could move out. Finished high school, got into a decent college, got a part time job, haven't talked to my parents since. Its all good though they were pretty huge assholes.

Left in '95 at 18 when I joined the Coast Guard. Returned for 1 year after my discharge in '99, but paid "rent"..basicaly a kickback to my dad for letting me keep my crap in his house. I was basically living on peoples couches and futons during this time. I had to get my crap out of the house in 2000 because the house got sold, moved in with some friends that fall, and I've been a rent-payer ever since. Years later, a doctor will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally retarded.

I think it should count like training wheels on a 2-wheeler count. (You're just learning, but you still have a fallback if you get a little unsteady.)

I had a similar experience, except for the fact that within 2 months of my leaving for college (dorm-life ... hooray ... not) my childhood home was foreclosed on and our family had to move out.

I spent my Thanksgiving break moving my stuff out of the house ... and into a rental place a mile or so away, where my father didn't have his own bedroom and I was slotted into sharing a bedroom with my sister.

Christmas break was ... less than enjoyable ... and summer break was hellacious. When I got back to school the following Fall, I spent as many vacations as I could working and staying at school. I started subletting rooms in off-campus houses just to avoid having to share a bedroom with my sister.

After I graduated, I moved in with my grandparents for a month, but I left after they didn't even offer to give me my own key and shared a room with my brother until I got a job and an apartment with a friend from college. I was 23 when I moved out once-and-for-all, with a month-long stint 3 years ago when I was between places.
